Good afternoon!

Guess how long it took for the NFL to register its first scandal of the season? Six seconds.

That’s all the gametime that had been played out before Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Carter was ejected from the opening match of the season against the Dallas Cowboys, after Carter appeared to spit on the chest of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

As commentator Chris Collinsworth said just after the incident, “I cannot believe what I just saw”.

Friday’s headlines

Here’s what’s making news today…

🏉 Collingwood has locked in a home preliminary final after defeating Adelaide 79-55 in front of 52,000 at Adelaide Oval. The match was overshadowed by crowd members booing Collingwood player Isaac Quaynor, who had previously been targeted with a homophobic slur by Adelaide's Izak Rankine that resulted in a four-game suspension. Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks declined to address the booing incident, while Collingwood coach Craig McRae condemned fans who participated. Collingwood needs one more victory to reach the AFL grand final championship game, while Adelaide will now face the winner of tomorrow’s Elimination Final between GWS and Hawthorn in a home semi-final next week.

🏉 The Brisbane Broncos defeated the Melbourne Storm 30-14, locking in a top-four finish for the Broncos. Brisbane’s Reece Walsh was the standout for the home side, scoring two tries and setting up one more. It came after a week of controversy for the 23-year-old, who posted a video to social media depicting him drinking toilet water. Melbourne halfback Jahrome Hughes, the winner of last year’s Dally M Medal, suffered a suspected broken wrist, in a major setback to his side’s finals hopes. In the first week of the finals, the Storm are set to face the Bulldogs, while the Broncos are likely to play Canberra.

🏀 Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season due to a right groin injury. The 2024 No. 1 draft pick has been limited to 13 games this season and hasn't played since 15 July, when she suffered the injury in the final minute of Indiana's win over Connecticut. Taking to social media, Clark said she "spent hours in the gym every day" trying to return, but called the situation "incredibly frustrating." The Fever's playoff status remains uncertain heading into Tuesday's regular-season finale, with team officials prioritising Clark's long-term health over a potential return.

Australian striker Sam Kerr will return to Chelsea's squad for Friday's Women's Super League opener against Manchester City after missing 20 months with an ACL injury. The Matildas captain suffered the injury at a training camp in Morocco in January 2024. Coach Sonia Bompastor said Kerr is "in a good place" physically and mentally but may start on the bench as she works back to full fitness. The return comes as Chelsea seeks a seventh consecutive WSL title, with Kerr's leadership and goal-scoring record seen as crucial to their campaign.

TDA’s top three…

Sport to keep an eye on this weekend…

U.S. Open: Novak Djokovic v Carlos Alcaraz

Talking points: As 38-year-old Novak Djokovic chases an elusive 25th grand slam title, it seems there are only two people who can stop him. They are none other than Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, the two players considered to be the future (and present) of men’s tennis. Djokovic has been defeated in the semi-finals of every major this year and will look to bring that streak to an end. Alcaraz will be seeking to avenge losses to Djokovic in the quarter-finals of this year’s Australian Open and the final of the Paris Olympics. Both are generational talents.

AFL: Fremantle Dockers v Gold Coast Suns

Talking points: This final is especially tantalising because both teams are so desperate for finals success. The Dockers have never won a flag, while the Suns are playing in their first-ever finals series since joining the league in 2011. In the only meeting between the two this season, the Dockers defeated the Suns 75-64 on the Gold Coast. This match is do-or-die, meaning the loser’s season will be over. The winner of this match will play the loser of Brisbane and Geelong.

How to watch: The match begins at 7:35pm on Saturday. You can watch it on Channel 7, Foxtel, and Kayo.

Women’s Rugby World Cup: Australia v England

Talking points: It’s the final weekend of the group stage at the Women’s Rugby World Cup, and Australia’s fate hangs in the balance. The Wallaroos will take on England, who are ranked number one in the world and are on a staggering 29-game winning streak. The Aussies are hoping to pull off a shock upset, having never beaten England and suffering a 42-7 loss in their most recent encounter. After last week’s 31-31 draw with the U.S., a narrow defeat or a shock win could be the Aussies’ ticket to the quarter-finals.

How to watch: The match begins at 2:00am on Sunday. You can watch the Women’s Rugby World Cup on Stan Sport.
