Good evening!
It’s a massive weekend of sport. Just to name a few of the fixtures on the cards, we’ll be treated to the first Test between the Wallabies and Lions, the first week of Super Netball finals, and The Open (men’s golf’s fourth major) - all on one weekend.
But in the business of sport, Snoop Dogg has become the latest celebrity to buy a stake in a sports team. The rapper has become a co-owner and investor of English football club Swansea City, who play in The Championship (one level below the Premier League).
He said: “This is a proud, working class city and club. An underdog that bites back, just like me. I'm proud to be part of Swansea City."

The transfer fee that Women’s Super League club Arsenal paid Liverpool to sign Canadian player Olivia Smith. The 20-year-old will leave Liverpool and begin a four-year contract with Arsenal in the upcoming season. The transfer fee is a record for women’s football, surpassing the £900,000 ($AU1.8 million) that Chelsea paid to bring Naomi Girma to the club from U.S. team the San Diego Wave at the beginning of this year.

Quote of the day
"For the past two years, I've been pushing myself so hard, fighting through injuries and facing many other challenges. But deep down, I haven't truly felt happy on the court for some time now. Tennis is such a beautiful sport. But right now, I feel it's time to take a step back and finally put myself first: to breathe, to heal, and to rediscover the joy of simply living."
Three-time grand slam finalist Ons Jabeur in a statement on social media announcing she is taking a break from the sport. The 30-year-old Tunisian will prioritise her health after struggling with injury in recent years. Jabeur’s most recent grand slam result was a first-round exit from Wimbledon earlier this month, when she retired mid-match.

⚽ England are into the semi-finals of the Women’s Euros after defeating Sweden in a penalty shootout. The defending champions were 2-0 down at halftime but came roaring back late in the second half, scoring two goals within two minutes and forcing the match into extra time. The match then went to penalty shootouts, where England prevailed 3-2. England will take on Italy, who beat Norway 2-1 yesterday in the semi-final. Spain and Switzerland will play the third quarter-final tomorrow at 5:00am (AEST).

🚴♂️ Slovenian cycling champion Tadej Pogačar has moved into the lead at the Tour de France after winning Stage 12, a gruelling mountain stage which put the best riders in the race to the test. Two-time champion Jonas Vingegaard (2022, 2023) finished second on the stage and is second in the overall standings, three minutes and 31 seconds behind Pogačar. Irishman Ben Healy started the day in the yellow leader’s jersey but was unable to keep up and slipped to 11th place.

🏊 Australian long-distance swimmer Moesha Johnson has won a second world title in as many days at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. After winning the women’s 10km open water event earlier this week, Johnson edged out Italy’s Ginevra Taddeucci by one second in the 5km open water race. She said afterwards: "A little bit of shock. That was harder than I expected. The body's not feeling too crash hot. To come away with two world titles in two plus days, in 30 degrees plus water, you can't ask for much more than that."

🏉 The GWS Giants have moved into the top four on the AFL ladder after defeating Essendon 104-56 last night. The Giants’ Jake Stringer starred, scoring three goals against his old club. It marks the Giants' fifth consecutive win as the Sydney-based club eyes off finals and continues to pursue its first premiership. Tonight, reigning premiers the Brisbane Lions (2nd) will host the Western Bulldogs (9th).

Felix Baumgartner (Getty)
Record-breaking skydiver Felix Baumgartner dies in paragliding accident
Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner has died in a paragliding accident in Italy. He was 56. Baumgartner was most well-known for his record-breaking skydive in 2012, where he jumped from a balloon 38 kilometres above earth and became the first skydiver to break the sound barrier.
What happened
According to local reports, Baumgartner lost control of a motorised paraglider while flying in central Italy and fell to the ground. The cause of the accident remains unclear. Massimiliano Ciarpella, the mayor of Porto Sant'Elpidio (the town Baumgartner was flying over) suggested he may have had a medical episode while flying.
Baumgartner’s career
Baumgartner’s historic jump in 2012 made headlines around the world. He made the jump over Roswell, New Mexico and reached a top speed of over 1,343km/h. The Austrian made a career out of daredevil acts such as skydiving over the English Channel.

Ruth Chepng’etich wins last year’s Chicago marathon and becomes the first woman to run a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes (Getty)
Marathon world record holder provisionally suspended following positive drug test
Ruth Chepng’etich, the world record holder for the women’s marathon, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after she tested positive for a banned substance in March.
Kenya’s Chepng’etich set the women’s marathon world record of two hours, nine minutes and 56 seconds at the Chicago Marathon in October 2024, eclipsing the previous record by nearly two minutes.
Context
A testing sample collected from Chepng’etich on 14 March this year was found to contain hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a diuretic used in clinical settings to treat fluid retention and hypertension.
HCTZ is also used as a masking agent to prevent the detection of other banned substances. It is on the World Anti-Doping Association’s banned substances list and is prohibited for athletes at all times.
The minimum reporting level for HCTZ is 20 nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL) in urine. Anything under this level is reported as a negative test. According to the AIU, the estimated concentration of HCTZ in Chepng’etich’s sample was 3800ng/mL.
The suspension handed down by the AIU is provisional, meaning that an investigation into the positive sample is ongoing. Chepng’etich is banned from competing until the investigation is over.
Doping and Kenyan athletes
Chepng’etich is not the only high-profile Kenyan athlete to receive a suspension for anti-doping violations in recent years.
In February last year, former Tokyo Marathon winner Sarah Chepchirchir received an eight-year ban for a second anti-doping violation.
Earlier this year, the reigning Sydney Marathon champion, Brimin Kipkorir, was provisionally suspended after testing positive for EPO and furosemide.
In April 2023, Kenya’s governing body for athletics said it was committing $US5 million ($AU7.6 million) per year to combat the use of illegal performance-enhancing drugs in the sport.
