Good evening!
On Wednesday night (tomorrow morning AEST) in Oslo, Norway, teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout will line up for his first senior Diamond League race. The Diamond League is athletics' top international series.
The field in the menโs 200m also includes Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo and three other athletes who've run under 19.80 seconds.
Gout has gone quicker still: his 19.67 in Sydney in April broke Usain Bolt's world under-20 record and remains the fastest time in the world this year.
A lot has been said about tempering our expectations as Gout begins to race more senior athletes, but surely we can dare to dream.

The number of years since Australiaโs menโs cricket team has lost a one-day international to Bangladesh, a drought that ended in Dhaka on Tuesday. Bangladesh won by 86 runs, with fast bowler Nahid Rana taking four wickets (4-41) for the hosts. It was only their second ODI win over Australia, after the 2005 'Cardiff Miracle', whose hero, Mohammad Ashraful, now coaches Bangladesh's batters. Australiaโs interim captain Josh Inglis described it as โa disappointing day all-round.โ

Nick Kyrgios speaking after he made an impressive comeback to singles, beating French world No. 36 Corentin Moutet in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) at the Stuttgart Open, a grass-court event held in the lead-up to Wimbledon. It marked the Australian's second singles victory on the ATP Tour since 2022, the year he reached the Wimbledon final before a series of knee and wrist injuries sidelined him. The 31-year-old, playing on a wildcard in Stuttgart, next faces Japan's Sho Shimabukuro in the round of 16. Fellow Aussies Rinky Hijikata and James Duckworth also won their first round matches.

โฝ The Matildas beat Mexico 3-1 in Sydney last night, levelling the two-match friendly series after a 1-0 loss on Saturday. The night belonged to captain Caitlin Foord, who led the team out on her 150th appearance and became the sixth Matilda to reach the mark. Foord capped the milestone match with her 41st international goal. The Matildas will not play again for four months, when they begin another series of international windows in preparation for the 2027 World Cup.ย

๐ Seventeen-year-old Sienna Toohey became the third-fastest Australian woman in history in the 100m breaststroke on Tuesday night, booking her spot at the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Toohey won the womenโs final in 1:05.97 on night two of the Australian Swimming Trials in Sydney and beat Olympic medallist Ella Ramsay. Backstroke star Kaylee McKeown also qualified for Glasgow, winning the 100m despite battling illness. The trials continue from 7:30pm tonight, with Olympic champion and 50m freestyle world record holder Cam McEvoy set to hit the pool.ย

๐ England cricket captain Ben Stokes is weighing up his future, with Englandโs cricket board fearing the 35-year-old could walk away from international cricket altogether after a nightclub incident in London early on Monday. Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson broke the team's curfew while celebrating their first-Test win over New Zealand, and an altercation followed that left a security guard needing stitches. Both are expected to be suspended and to miss the rest of the series against New Zealand while officials investigate. It is the latest off-field issue for a team that promised to reset after losing the Ashes.

Serena Williams in action on her professional tennis comeback (Getty)
The Queen at Queens: Serena Williams returns after a four-year hiatus
Serena Williams has made a winning return to professional tennis, claiming victory in her first match in almost four years at the Queenโs Club Championships in London.ย
Hereโs what to know.
Her 2022 farewell
Over a 30-year career, Williams won 23 Grand Slam titles and built a reputation for returning from setbacks, including multiple injuries throughout the mid-2000s. She even won the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant.
In August 2022, Williams wrote a personal essay for Vogue where she said she was not โretiringโ but โevolvingโ away from tennis. She then played what was widely expected to be her final tournament in theย U.S. Open the following month.
Rumours of a comeback
Speculation about a comeback had been building for months. In December, Williams re-entered tennisโ anti-doping testing pool โย a required step for any player planning to compete professionally again.ย
After the reports of her return plans emerged, Williams pushed back on the rumours, posting on X:ย ย

Six months later, Williams was back on court in London.
Reflecting on her return, she said: โThe wait was part of the story.โ
A winning returnย
Williams made her return at the Queenโs Club Championships after accepting a doubles wildcard alongside Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. The pair defeatedย Nicole MelicharโMartinez and Erin Routliffe (7โ6[2], 6โ2) in their opening match.
After the win, Williams said: โI never got to play here, it was always just the men. It feels really special to play somewhere so iconic.โ
The Queenโs tournament returned to the womenโs calendar last year after an absence of more than 50 years.ย
Mboko described the experience as an โhonourโ to share the court, adding โweโre going for more.โ
Whatโs next
Williams and Mboko will face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the doubles quarterfinals tomorrow.
But attention is already turning to Wimbledon, which begins on 29 June.
Williamsโ return to grass has fuelled speculation she could enter the yearโs third Grand Slam. When asked about her plans, she said: โI still have a little time to decideโ.

Argentina won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar (Getty)
World Cup 101: what you need to know ahead of Fridayโs FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup kicks off on Friday morning, with the biggest tournament in the competitionโs history set to get underway.
The United States, Canada and Mexico are hosting the event, marking the first time three countries have shared World Cup duties.
Bigger than everย
The FIFA World Cup is contested by national teams every four years and has been running since 1930. This yearโs tournament is the 23rd edition.
A record 48 teams have qualified, up from 32 teams at the 2022ย World Cup in Qatar.ย
The expanded format means the teams are divided into 12 groups of four for the opening group stage, with each team playing the other three sides in its group.ย The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout rounds. Thatโs an increase from the previous format, where only 16 teams progressed beyond the group stage.ย
The tournament will then move through the Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals before the final in New Jersey on 19 July.ย
Why are three countries hosting
The larger field of 48 teams and an increase in total matches to 104 meant that it was logistically easier for the tournament to be staged across three countries. Matches will be played at 16 different venues.
The bulk of the matches will be played in the U.S., with Canada and Mexico hosting a smaller share each.
Who are the favourites
Argentina enter the tournament as defending champions after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Captain Lionel Messi is expected to feature at his sixth World Cup, although history is against his side. No nation has won back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1962.
Many bookmakers have Spain as the team to beat after their victory at the 2024 European Football Championship. England, who Spain beat in that final, are also considered strong contenders, alongside France.
Brazil can never be ruled out. The five-time world champions have not lifted the World Cup trophy since 2002 but remain among the leading chances.
Meanwhile, Portugal is another team attracting attention. Ranked fifth in the world, it will be chasing a first World Cup title, with 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo expected to play at what is likely to be his sixth and final tournament.
Australiaโs chancesย
The Socceroos have been drawn in Group D alongside Tรผrkiye, the U.S. and Paraguay. They open their campaign against Tรผrkiye on Sunday at 2pm (AEST).ย
All three of Australia's group-stage matches will be played duringย Australian daytime hours, a rarity for a major football tournament.ย
Australiaโs best result at a menโs World Cup is reaching the Round of 16, which it achieved in 2006 and again in 2022.ย ย ย
Whatโs next?
The opening game is between South Africa and co-hosts Mexico, and kicks off at 5am (AEST) on Friday 12 June. Every match is live and free to watch in Australia on SBS and SBS On Demand.
