As it now stands, the Lions are the only club to have won three consecutive premierships twice. Their first three-peat happened between 2001 and 2003. The only other club to have done it at least once is Melbourne.

🚴 Australian cyclist Michael Matthews finished second in the men’s road race at the World Championships on Sunday in Montreal. It’s the fourth individual world championship medal of his career. The 36-year-old crossed the line just 13 seconds after winner Brandon McNulty, who became the first American to win the race since Lance Armstrong in 1993. Afterwards, Matthews said: “After what I’ve been through the last two years with the embolism in my lungs…to breaking both my arms…and thinking my career was done…I’m just speechless honestly.” The Netherlands’ Demi Vollering won the women’s road race on Saturday.

🏎️ Australian Formula One driver Oscar Piastri finished 13th at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, while Mercedes’ George Russell drove to victory. Russell finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, who came second and third respectively. Piastri had been running third before locking up his brakes midway through the race and missing a turn. He said the mistake took him by surprise, but added: “I think once the dust settles there will be a lot of positives from this weekend.”

After winning the opening ODI in Durban by 67 runs, South Africa once again outplayed Australia to seal a series victory with one ODI remaining.

The hosts set a formidable target of 365 runs, led by batter David Miller, who scored 142 runs and was named player of the match for his efforts. Australia’s chase got off to a strong start with Travis Head and Mitch Marsh each scoring 84 runs, but the middle order failed to fire.

The Aussies ultimately fell 32 runs short. The third and final ODI of the series will be played on Wednesday (AEST) in Potchefstroom.

Mike Baird has quit as Cricket Australia chairman after Cricket NSW pulled its support for him to stay on amid a dispute over selling Big Bash League (BBL) club stakes to private owners.

Baird is an advocate for state cricket bodies to sell parts of their BBL licenses to private owners. Former Test batsman David Boon will step into the role on an interim basis from next month’s annual general meeting.

Cricket NSW will reportedly nominate Ed Cowan, another former Test batter, to replace Baird in the long term, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The NRL and NRLW Grand Finals are set after a thrilling weekend of preliminary finals.

Here’s what happened.

The 2026 NRL Grand Final is set to be played between the Sydney Roosters and the Newcastle Knights following the weekend’s two preliminary finals.

On Friday night, the Roosters defeated the Dolphins 36-20 in Brisbane, denying the club its first Grand Final appearance since joining the competition in 2023. Mark Nawaqanitawase starred again for the Roosters with two tries and 329 run metres. The Grand Final will be his final game in the NRL, with the talented winger set to return to rugby union next season.

On Sunday, the Newcastle Knights upset the Penrith Panthers 22-14, securing a spot in the Grand Final for the first time since 2001. Late in the first half, Knights hooker Phoenix Crossland was sent off for a dangerous ‘hip drop’ tackle on Panthers playmaker Nathan Cleary, who was stretchered off the field with a compound ankle fracture. Cleary had started on the bench because of a fracture in his other foot but took to the field regardless. With one less player on the field in the second half, the Knights played bravely to hold the Panthers out and score three unanswered tries, two of them courtesy of Sandon Smith. It’s a remarkable turnaround for the Knights from last year, when they finished last on the NRL ladder.

In the NRLW, the Grand Final will see the Sydney Roosters and Brisbane Broncos go head to head in a rematch of last year’s decider.

On Saturday, the Roosters maintained their unbeaten record this season with a 20-10 win over the Canberra Raiders. Playmaker Tarryn Aiken sealed the victory for the Roosters with a try in the final two minutes of the match. Last year, the Roosters were also one match away from a perfect season before being beaten by the Broncos in the decider. It means both the men’s and women’s Roosters sides will play a grand final on the same day, repeating the Broncos’ feat from last year.

On Sunday, the Broncos advanced to the club’s fifth NRLW Grand Final appearance, beating the Gold Coast Titans 20-8. The reigning premiers raced out to a 20-4 half time lead as Tamika Upton, Romy Teitzel, Lauren Dam, and Julia Robinson all crossed for tries. The Grand Final will be NRLW veteran Ali Brigginshaw’s final match for the Broncos as she seeks to win a record fifth premiership.
