Good evening!

Last Friday in New York saw one of the supreme athletes of our generation in action.

Competitive food eater Joey Chestnut downed 70.5 hot dogs and buns in just 10 minutes to win a record 17th title at the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest.Β

The 41-year-old fell short of his record of 76 hot dogs and buns, which he set in 2021.

Before the weekend, his best F1 result was fourth. The race also saw Oscar Piastri’s lead in the drivers' championship cut to just eight points after he finished second to McLaren teammate Lando Norris.

Quote of the day

β€œThis was the fastest 1500m I’ve been in all year, so it was definitely tough in that last 400m, but I’m okay with that being tough at this point of the season. It was really important to get a really fast one under my belt and build from here.”
Australian athlete Jess Hull after finishing third in the women’s 1500m at the Prefontaine Classic, a prestigious athletics event held annually in the U.S. state of Oregon. In a race dubbed the fastest women’s 1500m of all time, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon set a new world record of 3:48.68, while Hull clocked a 3:52.67 β€” the third fastest time of her career. Other notable Australian results included Lachlan Kennedy finishing seventh in the final of the men’s 100m, and 19-year-old Cameron Myers finishing sixth in the men’s mile.

Random fact of the day

Yesterday’s NRL match between the Wests Tigers and Sydney Roosters saw the Tigers’ Fainu brothers (Samuela, Latu, and Sione) all cross the line for a try. They are the first trio of brothers in NRL history to all score tries for the same team in the same game. The Tigers won the game 30-28.

In case you missed it…

🚴 The world’s most prestigious cycling race, Le Tour de France, began on the weekend with two riders from the Alpecin–Deceuninck team winning the opening two stages. Belgian sprinter Jasper Philipsen won stage one, and Dutch all-rounder Mathieu van der Poel won stage two. Van der Poel’s stage two victory means he is leading the general classification with race favourites Tadej Pogačar (+4 seconds) and Jonas Vingegaard (+6 seconds) close behind him on the leaderboard. Stage three is expected to be contested by the sprinters, given the route is largely flat.Β

⚽ Panama’s women’s football team pulled off a shock upset against the Matildas in Western Australia, beating the home side 1-0. It is the first loss for the Matildas under new coach Joe Montemurro, who has been in charge for three matches. With several star Matildas either injured or on leave, Montemurro fielded a side with 10 different starting players to the side that played Slovenia twice last month. The Matildas will have a chance for redemption when they play Panama again tomorrow night.Β

🏐 In Super Netball, the West Coast Fever beat the Giants to win a record 11th straight match and be crowned the competition’s minor premiers for 2025. With just one round of the regular season remaining, the Fever are on 44 points, ahead of the second-placed NSW Swifts on 36 points. The Melbourne Vixens are in third and have also locked in their place in the finals after a win over the Queensland Firebirds on Sunday. Next week, the Adelaide Thunderbirds and Sunshine Coast Lightning will play each other in a fixture set to determine which of the two teams will advance to the finals.Β

🏏 The Australian Test cricket side beat the West Indies in the second Test of the series by 133 runs. The result means the Aussies lead the three-Test series 2-0 and will retain the Frank Worrell trophy for the 14th straight series. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey was named the player of the match. The third and final match will be played in Kingston, Jamaica and is set to begin this weekend.

De Minaur last Aussie standing in Wimbledon singles draw

After the weekend, Alex de Minaur is the last Australian in either the men’s or women’s singles draw at Wimbledon. Here’s what you need to know.Β

Thompson retires, Kasatkina beaten

Jordan Thompson’s thrilling Wimbledon run ended in the fourth round when he was forced to retire from his match with American fifth seed Taylor Fritz due to injury. The 31-year-old called time on his best Wimbledon campaign in nine attempts midway through the second set. Fritz will now play the 17th-seed Karen Khachanov.Β

Meanwhile, Kasatkina was beaten by the 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets. She said: β€œOf course, I think I could do better on my side, but I also have to give her credit, she played a very, very good match."

De Minaur up for the challenge

After de Minaur cruised past Denmark’s August Holmgren in the third round, the 11th seed advanced to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon for the third time in his career.Β

De Minaur faces a tough assignment in the Round of 16 against 7-time Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic, who comes into the match off the back of his 100th Wimbledon victory. Only Roger Federer (8 titles and 105 wins) has recorded more wins at the grass-court major.Β

De Minaur is embracing the challenge. He said: "Now I'm getting to play Novak on one of his favourite, if not his favourite, surfaces and his favourite tournament. So it's going to be the ultimate challenge, and I'm excited for it."

Rugby union: Waratahs test Lions while the Wallabies scrape past Fiji

It was a big weekend for rugby union as the British and Irish Lions Tour continued and the Wallabies played their first Test of the year. Here’s what you need to know before the Lions are back in action against the ACT Brumbies on Wednesday night.Β

Lions v Waratahs

On Saturday night, the British and Irish Lions beat the NSW Waratahs 21-10 in a much closer contest than the majority of rugby media had anticipated. After posting scores of more than 50 points against the Western Force and Queensland Reds, it was the Lions’ scrappiest performance of their tour so far, but they remain undefeated on Australian soil after three matches.Β

Scottish centre Huw Jones was the sole try-scorer for the Lions in the first half, crossing twice to help his side to a 14-0 advantage. The Waratahs then struck back on either side of halftime with tries from winger Darby Lancaster and hooker Ethan Dobbins to bring the score to 14-10. English halfback Alex Mitchell then scored the eventual matchwinner in the 55th minute. Mitchell was named the man of the match. The most impressive Waratahs player on the night was flanker Charlie Gamble, who had four turnovers in a relentless performance.Β

Wallabies v FijiΒ

The Wallabies and Fiji met in Newcastle on Sunday afternoon for a Test match largely billed as a warm-up for the Wallabies ahead of the three-Test series against the Lions. Instead, it was a back-and-forth contest that almost saw Fiji claim their first victory against Australia on their home turf since 1954.Β

The Wallabies led 14-5 at half-time before Fiji scored thirteen unanswered points to claim an 18-14 lead. Australian captain Harry Wilson then saved the day for Australia with a match-winner in the 78th minute. The Australian camp will sweat on the health of playmaker Noah Lolesio, who left the field after injuring his neck, and hooker Dave Porecki, who came off with a head knock.Β

Coach Joe Schmidt was asked by reporters if he was confident ahead of the Wallabies facing the Lions on 19 July. He said: β€œI’m not a really confident sort of person. There’s not real confidence, but there’s a quiet resolve. And that quiet resolve, hopefully over the three-match series can build to something that will earn us the support of a very interested group.”

All Blacks v France

Across the ditch, New Zealand and France played the first of a three-Test series in Dunedin. The All Blacks, who fielded a side with four debutants, came out on top with a 31-27 victory. The French were criticised in the media ahead of the series for selecting a touring squad of players with less experience than usual, but the result proved they are up to the task. With the win, the All Blacks became the first international rugby union team to win 500 Test matches.Β

What’s next?

The Lions head to Canberra to play the ACT Brumbies in the fourth match of the tour on Wednesday night. The Brumbies were the best Australian team in this year’s Super Rugby Pacific competition and are expected to put up a tough fight.Β
