Good evening!
Need a fun fact to whip out at a party this weekend? Tell your friends about Ukraine’s competitive sumo wrestling scene.
One of the world’s best emerging sumo wrestlers is 21-year-old Ukrainian Danilo Yavhushyshynb, who left the country after Russia launched its invasion in 2022.
At 125kg, Yavhushyshyn is considered a lightweight sumo competitor.
He said at a press conference this week he has ambitions to increase his body mass, but “it’s hard to really eat more than I am at the moment”.
I can only imagine the serving sizes.

Friday’s headlines
🏀 Bryce Cotton has powered the Adelaide 36ers to their best start to an NBL season since 2001, with a 98-89 victory over Tasmania JackJumpers, ending their opponents' three-game winning streak. Cotton scored 29 points and had nine assists, while Isaac Humphries added 24 points in front of a sellout crowd at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Thursday. The result sees the Sixers advance to 3-0, their best start to a season since winning their first five games in the 2000-01 season. Adelaide coach Mike Wells said the team came out "in attack mode," adding: "When we moved the ball and guys were playing downhill, we were pretty hard to guard." Bryce Hamilton scored 22 points with nine assists for the JackJumpers (3-2), while captain Will Magnay added 17 points in the loss.

⚽ England’s national soccer team have beaten Wales 3-0 in a friendly at Wembley, with all three goals coming in the opening 20 minutes. Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers opened the scoring after just three minutes, before club teammate Ollie Watkins doubled the lead minutes later. Bukayo Saka then became Arsenal's highest England goalscorer with his 13th goal, a high strike past Wales goalie Karl Darlow. The victory sets up England ahead of Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Latvia in Riga, where they can secure automatic qualification to the tournament, while Wales will play Belgium on Monday (local time).

🏀 The Las Vegas Aces are one win away from their third WNBA championship in four years after defeating the Phoenix Mercury 90-88 in Game 3 of the 2025 WNBA Finals, taking a commanding 3-0 series lead. Season MVP A'ja Wilson scored the game-winner with seconds remaining, capping an impressive 34-point, 14-rebound performance that saw her become the most prolific scorer in a single finals game in league history. Wilson launched the ball as the shot clock hit 2.3 seconds, it landed on the edge of the basket with 1.1 seconds remaining, and dropped through the net with less than a second to go. Las Vegas head coach Becky Hammon said her instructions before the final play to her side was to "get the ball to A'ja, and get out of the way," while guard Jewell Loyd said the entire bench had "100% confidence" in Wilson to deliver the winning basket. The Mercury face a near-impossible task in the league's first-ever best-of-seven Finals series, with basketball history working against them — no NBA team has ever won a championship series after trailing 3-0. Game 4 is on Friday (local time).

⚽ A soccer friendly between Argentina and Puerto Rico has been relocated from Chicago to Florida, with the match now set to be played in Fort Lauderdale. An anonymous Argentine Football Association executive told The Associated Press the match had to be moved because U.S. President Donald Trump had deployed the National Guard as part of his immigration crackdown. However, a spokesperson for the Chicago venue said it was a decision made by the promoter "due to low ticket sales". Authorities have arrested more than 1,000 people since the crackdown began, with the Trump administration vowing to deploy National Guard troops as part of its push to boost deportations.

TDA’s top three
Sport to keep an eye on this weekend
Brisbane Lions v Port Adelaide Power (AFLW)
Talking points: It’s the 100th career game for Brisbane captain Breanna Koenen, and her side will be hoping to make it four wins in a row. The Lions, currently in fifth position on the competition ladder, could fulfil the final piece of Australia’s first-ever ‘superfecta’, taking out the AFL and NRL men’s and women’s premierships in the same year.
How to watch: The match begins at 5.05pm (AEDT) tomorrow. You can watch on Kayo and Foxtel.
NBA Preseason
Talking points: The NBA’s preseason fixtures have kicked off, with the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns playing in Macao, China tonight. Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks will play for the Suns for the first time. It is the first time the NBA has held a pre-season game in China since 2019, after the relationship between the competition and the Chinese government deteriorated when the sport publicly supported pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong.
How to watch: The Nets and Suns will face off at 11pm tonight. You can watch on NBA League Pass.
Women’s Cricket World Cup: Australia v India
Talking points: It’s still only the group stage of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, but this is a match between two of the tournament favourites. Australia are seven-time World Cup champions and looking to win consecutive titles for the first time since 1988. India’s women have never won the tournament and are setting out to claim their first title on home soil. In a three-match series between the two sides played last month, Australia won two of the three games to seal the series, but were dominated in the second match. India has won two of their three matches, against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, while they wer beaten by South Africa yesterday. Australia have beaten New Zealand and Pakistan, while their match against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain.
How to watch: The match begins at 8:30pm on Sunday. You can watch the Women’s Cricket World Cup on Prime Video.
