Good evening!

Welcome to the second edition of our new Friday format.

At the moment, we’re thinking about producing videos explaining thorny sport-related topics.

We would love to hear the questions you’d like us to answer.

It can be anything: The offside rule in soccer, why getting out on the first ball in cricket is called a duck, or the difference between ice skating and ice dance.

Submit your question below.

Friday’s headlines

Here’s what’s making news today…

🏟️ The organisers of the 2028 LA Olympics are set to break tradition by allowing corporate naming rights for selected venues. Historically, the International Olympic Committee has not allowed for venues to be put up for naming rights. Comcast and Honda are the first sponsors confirmed, with up to 19 venues also open for deals. LA28 chief Casey Wasserman said: “These groundbreaking partnerships… will not only generate critical revenue for LA28 but will introduce a new commercial model to benefit the entire Movement.”

🚴‍♂️ Former Australian track cyclist Matthew Richardson, who now races for Great Britain, has broken the world record for the flying 200 metres on track with a time of 8.941 seconds at the Konya Velodrome in Turkey. Richardson is the first person to record a time under nine seconds for the event, averaging 80.5 km/h. He said: “It’s cool to be able to call myself the fastest cyclist of all time.”

🏉 Melbourne’s Harry Grant scored a brilliant golden point try to give the Storm a 22-18 win over the Panthers in Thursday night’s grand final rematch. Xavier Coates also continued his run of good form, crossing the line twice for Melbourne. The result ended a nine-match win streak for Penrith, who were left reeling after Nathan Cleary’s late field goal in regular time was ruled out for a blocking penalty on Moses Leota.

🏉 Carlton opened the 10th AFLW season with a strong showing, defeating Collingwood 45-21 at Ikon Park in front of 8,042 fans. Erone Fitzpatrick starred for Carlton with two goals. The West Coast Eagles also kicked off on a high note, beating the Gold Coast Suns 35-20. Eagles debutant Lucia Painter has put the league on notice after kicking three goals in the third quarter to help her team to victory.

TDA’s top three

Sport to keep an eye on this weekend

AFL: Fremantle Dockers v Brisbane Lions (Friday night)

Talking points: The Lions (5th) are the reigning premiers and have shown glimpses of their potential to go back-to-back, but have also lost two of their last three matches. Meanwhile, Fremantle (4th) are well and truly in the hunt for their first flag (Flagmantle?), having won 11 of their past 12 matches. Both teams need at least one more win from these last two rounds to secure their spot in the top eight. Fremantle will have the home advantage tonight.

How to watch: The match begins at 8:35pm tonight (AEST) and will be live on Kayo and Foxtel.

International cricket: Australia v South Africa (Tomorrow night)

Talking points: Australia and South Africa meet in Cairns on Saturday night for a T20 series decider. The series is tied at 1-1 after Australia won the first match by 17 runs, and then South Africa bounced back with a 53-run victory in the second match. After both matches so far were decided by superb individual batting performances, Tim David in the first game and Dewald Brevis in the second, it will be interesting to see who steps up in the third. The Aussies will miss batter Mitch Owen, who is out after sustaining a concussion in the second match.

How to watch: The match begins at 7:15pm tomorrow (AEST) and will be live on Kayo and Foxtel.

International rugby: Australia v South Africa (The wee hours of Sunday morning)

Talking points: The Wallabies’ first fixture of The Rugby Championship could be their toughest this year. Besides the fact that the Springboks are the world’s number one rugby team, this match is being played at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park, where the Wallabies have not won since 1963. The venue is 1800m above sea level, which makes it notoriously difficult for teams to match the Springboks’ intensity over 80 minutes. Watch out for the Wallabies James O’Connor, who is making his first Test start since 2022 after fly-half Tom Lynagh was concussed against the Lions.

How to watch: The match begins at 1:10am on Sunday (AEST) and will be live on Stan Sport.
