Australian cyclist Sarah Gigante after she finished third overall at the Giro d'Italia Donne, one of the three ‘Grand Tour’ races in women’s cycling. Gigante is making a comeback to sport after having surgery last year for iliac artery endofibrosis, a rare vascular condition mainly found in cyclists and runners. The 24-year-old won two of the race’s eight stages and also claimed the Queen of the Mountain jersey as the top climber. Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini won the race for the second consecutive year.

⚽ England’s Chelsea have been crowned as the best football club in the world after beating France’s Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup. Cole Palmer starred for Chelsea, scoring two goals and assisting João Pedro on the third. Chelsea coach Enzo Marseca said: “I have no words for the players. For me, we won the game in the first ten minutes. We set the tempo, we knew the way we wanted to play. Today we found a position for Cole where there was more space to attack. The effort from all the players has been fantastic.”

🏉 West Coast Eagles player Jack Graham has received a four-match suspension from the AFL for using a homophobic slur during his side’s loss to GWS on 4 July. Graham self-reported the incident to the Eagles late last week, and the club passed the matter on to the AFL integrity unit. In a statement released by the Eagles, Graham said: "I am very remorseful for the word I used and know such language has no place in our community or our game." Alongside his suspension, Graham will also undertake Pride in Sport education.

🏐 Following the final regular season round of Super Netball over the weekend, four teams have advanced to the league’s finals series. Next Sunday will see a minor semi-final between the Adelaide Thunderbirds (3rd) and Melbourne Vixens (4th) and a major semi-final between the NSW Swifts (2nd) and West Coast Fever (1st). The loser of the minor semi-final will be eliminated, and the winner will advance to the Preliminary Final against the loser of the major semi-final. The winner of the major semi-final will automatically advance to the grand final. The Fever are the competition favourites, given they won the minor premiership and are on a record 12-match winning streak.

🏏 Australia’s men’s cricket team lead the West Indies by 181 runs after the second day of the third Test between the two sides. After Australia bowled the West Indies out for 143 runs, Australia’s batters were unable to assert themselves and finished the day having lost six wickets for just 99 runs. Cameron Green was Australia’s best with 42 runs and will start at the crease tomorrow alongside captain Pat Cummins (5 runs). Opener Sam Konstas’ position in the team will be heavily debated in the lead-up to the Ashes after he was dismissed for a duck. The 19-year-old has averaged just over 8 runs per innings for the series.

Grace Kim becomes fifth Australian to win a women’s golf major
Australian golfer Grace Kim has won her first major title at the Evian Championship in France. The Evian Championship is the fourth women’s golf major of the year. The final major for 2025 is the Women’s Open, which will begin on 31 July.
What happened
Kim started the final round four shots off the lead. On the 18th hole, Kim hit an eagle (two shots under par) to level scores with Thailand’s world number two Jeeno Thitikul and force a playoff.
It looked all but over for Kim on the first playoff hole when she hit her second shot into the hazard and incurred a penalty stroke. She then hit a stunning chip, which went in for a birdie, and forced another playoff hole. Remarkably, Kim drained another eagle on the second playoff hole to write her name into history as a major winner.
Kim is the fifth Australian to win a women’s golf major, joining Minjee Lee (3), Karrie Webb (7), Hannah Green (1), and Jan Stephenson (3).
What they said
Kim said: “It’s a huge achievement for me. I’ve had a lot of doubts early this year. I was kind of losing motivation. I kind of had to get some hard conversations done with the team. Yeah, kind of had to wake up a little bit. So to be sitting here next to this trophy is definitely surreal.”
Men’s golf
American golfer Chris Gotterup claimed the biggest victory of his career, winning the Scottish Open. The 25-year-old finished two shots ahead of five-time major winner Rory McIlroy and England’s Marco Penge. Gotterup has now earned a spot in the final men’s golf major of the year, The Open, which begins on Thursday at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Jannik Sinner and Iga Świątek (Getty)
Sinner and Świątek reign supreme at Wimbledon 2025
The 2025 Wimbledon Championships have officially been written into history as the men’s singles final wrapped up in the early hours of Monday morning (AEST).
Here’s what you might have missed.
Men’s singles
Jannik Sinner became the first Italian to win the men’s singles title at Wimbledon, defeating his Spanish rival Carlos Alcaraz in four sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4). Alcaraz won the opening set, but Sinner marched to victory by winning the next three sets. The match was finished in three hours and four minutes.
The result comes just over a month after Sinner blew a two-set lead (and three championship points) over Alcaraz in the French Open final to hand the Spaniard his fifth major title.
The world number one’s victory means that he now has four Grand Slam titles, and is only a French Open title away from a career Grand Slam (winning at least one title at all four majors). It was also the first time that Sinner had beaten Alcaraz in their past six meetings and ended a 24-match winning streak for Alcaraz.
Sinner said: “I am living my dream. It’s amazing. I want to thank my team and everyone who came here from this special day. You give me so much emotions on and off the court and we try to keep pushing and become a better tennis player, but mostly a better person.”
Women’s singles
On Sunday morning (AEST), Iga Świątek became the first Pole to win the women’s singles title at Wimbledon. The 24-year-old roared to victory, defeating American Amanda Anisimova in straight sets without losing a single game (6-0, 6-0). The entire match took 57 minutes. It marks Świątek’s sixth major title, with only the Australian Open trophy missing from her cabinet.
She holds a perfect 6-0 record in grand slam finals, and joins Stefanie Graf in the exclusive group of players who have won a major final without losing a game.
Świątek said: "I'm just appreciating every minute. I'm just proud of myself because, yeah, who would have expected that? For sure it's a lot, especially after a season with a lot of ups and downs and a lot of expectations from the outside that I didn't really match winning Wimbledon.”
Hijikata falls short of second major title
Australia’s Rinky Hijikata fell short of claiming his second doubles major title after he and the Netherlands’ David Pel lost in the final to the fifth-seeded British pairing of Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool. Hijikata and Pel, who were called into the tournament as alternates and made a stunning run to the final, lost in straight sets.
What’s next?
The final major of the year, the U.S. Open, will begin on 24 August. The defending champions are Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka.
