Boxing is introducing gender verification testingโฆhereโs what you need to know
The International Boxing Association has endorsed World Boxingโs decision to introduce mandatory gender verification testing. Boxing is the second Olympic sport after athletics to introduce such protocols.ย
What is World Boxing?
World Boxing is a newly formed governing body that has received provisional approval to oversee boxing at the Olympics. The International Boxing Association was the sportโs governing body for decades, but its relationship with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) broke down before the Tokyo Olympics.ย
The IOC then oversaw boxing at the Tokyo and Paris Games, before provisionally approving World Boxing to handle the sport in the lead-up to Los Angeles.ย
Context
World Boxing announced on Friday that all athletes will have to undergo a genetic sex test before being permitted to fight. The testing is part of a broader set of policies on โSex, Age and Weightโ, which the organisation said have been implemented โto ensure the safety of all participantsโ.ย The protocol is set to be introduced from 1 July this year.ย
The test athletes will have to take a PCR test,ย a genetic test which can be used to determine if someone has a Y chromosome, typically found in men.ย ย ย
It will be conducted by national federations, which will then approve or deny an athleteโs participation in the sport with a gender eligibility certificate.
Yesterday, the IBA released a statement announcing that it was supportive of World Boxingโs decision. IBA chief executive officer Chris Roberts said: "We wholeheartedly welcome these proactive steps that align with the long-standing framework that the IBA has maintained, particularly with regard to the rigorous sex-testing protocols that have been a cornerstone of our practices".
Imane Kehlif
World Boxingโs statement on Friday specifically mentioned Algerian gold medallist Imane Khelif. It said Khelif will not be able to participate in โany World Boxing event until [she] undergoes sex testing.โ
In the lead-up to the Paris Olympics, Khelif and Taiwanese fighter Lin Yu-Ting were both disqualified from the IBAโs 2023 World Championships for failing a gender eligibility test.ย
The IBA said the two โdid not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognised testโ.ย
Other sports
Boxing is not the only sport to introduce this type of testing. World Athletics became the first Olympic sport to approve mandated chromosome testing for female athletes in March. The governing body is hoping to have the testing protocol in place ahead of the World Championships in September. At the time, World Athletics President said the test would guarantee the โintegrity of womenโs sportโ.
