Josh Addo-Carr stands himself down for elimination final after alleged positive drug test
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs player Josh Addo-Carr has stood himself down from this weekendās elimination final against the Manly Sea Eagles, after he allegedly tested positive for cocaine during a roadside police stop.
What happened
Addo-Carr was pulled over by police for a random drug test on Friday night in Sydney. He then allegedly tested positive for cocaine and a second test was taken for further analysis.
The 29-year-old has not been charged pending the results of the second test and has denied using the substance.
The Bulldogsā General Manager Phil Gould, coach Cameron Ciraldo, and chairman Adam Driussi met this morning to discuss whether or not they would field him this weekend before Addo-Carr took the decision into his own hands and stood down.
What they said
In a press conference this morning, Gould said: "Weāve got a big crowd coming; fans and supporters ā thereāll be a lot disappointed that Josh isnāt playing. Heās a very, very popular player in our club and with our fanbase, but in talking to Josh this morning he realised it was probably the right thing to do at the moment on behalf of the team and the club and I thank him for that.ā

National sport bodies will lose funding if their boards arenāt gender-balanced by 2027
The Federal Government has announced it will require national and state/territory sport bodies to have gender-balanced boards to receive funding. The policy doesnāt apply to community-level clubs, or professional leagues like the NRL or AFL. Itās designed to ensure more women hold sport leadership positions.
Policy
To continue accessing Federal Government funding, national sport bodies such as Swimming Australia must ensure 50% of their board directors are women or gender diverse by 1 July 2027. Board chair positions and sub-committee memberships will be subject to the same requirements.
State and territory sport bodies - for example, Football Victoria - must also follow these rules to receive funding. The Government said it worked with the national sport oversight body, the Australian Sports Commission, as well as individual state and territory sport agencies.
Disparity today
Around a third of women in Australia participate in some form of sport, including in non-playing roles, once a week ā compared to nearly half of Australian men. Currently, only 62% of government-funded national sporting organisations meet the new gender-parity standard for board directors. Of organisations overseeing para-sports, 25% are chaired by a woman.
What they said:
Sport Minister Anika Wells said: āWe need more women making decisions for more women. Our sporting systems are not equal and this policy will help address the gender imbalances prevalent in sports leadership.ā
Minister for Women Katy Gallagher said: āFor too long, women have not been represented in leadership and decision-making roles across a range of sports.ā
A message from our sponsor
In a recent article, Dr. Dominique Condo, Senior Lecturer in Sport Nutrition at Deakin, discusses the AFL's decision to stop body composition and skinfold testing for players under 18. It comes soon after the AFL put an end to publishing playerās weights.
The move to ban skinfold testing on junior players has sparked debate among prominent figures in the AFL who argue that these measures are important for performance and fitness. Ex-player and coach, Paul Roos said, āThis is just farcical ā¦ they [skinfold tests] are such a minor thing, to take them away seems ludicrous.ā
But by keeping weights private, the league aims to reduce the pressure on players to meet certain body standards, which can lead to body image issues and unhealthy behaviours.
Skinfold testing, which measures body fat, has long been used to help track an athleteās fitness but also risks causing anxiety about body image, especially in young players. The AFLās new policy reflects a growing understanding that athlete health is more holistic than just physical metrics. The change is part of a broader, global trend in sport to support athletes' mental well-being and promote a healthier approach to body image.
