Good afternoon,

Here's a remarkable Australian achievement for your Friday afternoon.

Lisa Weightman is a 47-year-old four-time Olympian.

Earlier this week, she became the first athlete in history to complete all seven World Marathon Majors (at the elite level) while also having competed at the Olympics, World Athletics Championships, and Commonwealth Games.

She sealed the feat by finishing the Boston Marathon on Monday. Did we mention that she did it while working full-time as a bank executive?

For a bit of trivia, can you name the six cities (apart from Boston) where the other marathon majors are held? The answer is at the bottom of the newsletter.

Friday’s headlines

Here’s what’s making news today…

Italy has rejected a proposal from a U.S. government official to replace Iran at this year’s FIFA World Cup. Italian sports minister Andrea Abodi called the idea "not possible", while finance minister Giancarlo Giorgetti described it as "shameful". The suggestion came from Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy to President Donald Trump, reportedly as a diplomatic gesture towards Italian PM Giorgia Meloni after Trump criticised the Pope's response to the U.S-Israel war in Iran. Iran has not withdrawn from the tournament, and FIFA says the country's group stage matches in the U.S. will go ahead as planned.

🏉 The Wests Tigers produced a commanding 33-14 win over the Canberra Raiders at Leichhardt Oval last night, opening the NRL's Anzac Round in front of a sold-out crowd. Halfback Adam Doueihi was the game's dominant figure, scoring twice and setting up teammates with smart ball movement. The Raiders had won four of the previous five meetings between the two sides. The Tigers now sit second on the ladder, while the Raiders drop to 14th.

🏉 The Sydney Swans demolished the Western Bulldogs by 66 points at Marvel Stadium last night in Round 7. Recruit Charlie Curnow, who joined the Swans from Carlton this season, kicked seven goals in the 126-60 win. An already undermanned Bulldogs side lost Aaron Naughton to a neck injury in the third quarter, with Tim English, Sam Darcy, and Rory Lobb also sidelined. Sydney remains top of the ladder with six wins from seven matches, while the Bulldogs have now lost three straight after a 4-0 start.

🏉 St Kilda forward Lance Collard will miss two weeks of football after the AFL Appeals Board reduced his ban for using homophobic language. The Tribunal originally handed the 21-year-old a nine-week penalty, including two suspended. The board found the original sanction excessive but upheld the conduct unbecoming charge. In its written reasons, the board argued  “racist, sexist or homophobic language” is a regular feature of AFL matches due to how fiercely contested the game is at the elite level. Former AFLW player and commentator Kate McCarthy said she was "genuinely speechless" at the remarks. Collard has now been found guilty of using the same slur twice in three seasons.

Sport to keep an eye on this weekend…

AFL: Essendon Bombers v Collingwood Magpies

Talking points: Essendon and Collingwood have clashed on   Anzac Day every year since 1995, with Saturday marking the 31st edition. Collingwood leads the all-time series 18 wins to 10, with two draws, and won last year by 41 points. The Bombers come in at 1-5 and are one of the competition's form stories in recent weeks. Their first win of the season was against an in-form Melbourne Demons side, and they have scored more than 100 points in back-to-back games for the first time in over a year, even in their loss to the Suns last week. Collingwood (3-3) welcome back midfielders Steele Sidebottom and Jordan De Goey from injury for the occasion.

How to watch: The match kicks off at 3:20pm (AEST) on Saturday. You can watch it on Channel 7, Fox Footy, and Kayo.

NRL: St George Illawarra Dragons v Sydney Roosters

Talking points: In the NRL, the Dragons and Roosters have battled for the Anzac Day Cup since 2002. In the 24 editions played so far, each team has won 12 times. The Roosters have won the last three. The Dragons are on an 11-match losing streak dating back to last season and come in off the back of a tumultuous week. Coach Shane Flanagan was sacked on Monday and former player and assistant Dean Young has stepped in as his replacement for the remainder of 2026. One of Young’s first decisions was to drop halfback Kyle Flanagan (the former coach’s son) and hand 20-year-old Kade Reed his NRL debut. On the other side, the Roosters have momentum after three straight wins and Billy Smith returns to the centres from a knee injury.

How to watch: The match kicks off at 4pm (AEST) on Saturday. You can watch it on Fox League and Kayo.

Rugby union: Wallaroos v Black Ferns

Talking points: Australia hosts New Zealand in the final match of the 2026 Pacific Four Series. It’s the first-ever Anzac Day Test between the two sides. Lock Michaela Leonard will make her 46th Test appearance on Saturday night, becoming the most-capped player in Wallaroos history. A Black Ferns win seals both the Series and the O'Reilly Cup, the trophy contested between Australia and New Zealand. The Wallaroos have lost their two previous matches in the tournament and have never defeated the Black Ferns since the two sides first played in 1994. Meanwhile, all men’s Super Rugby Pacific matches this weekend will be played in Christchurch for the ‘Super Round’ with three fixtures between Australian and New Zealand teams.

How to watch: The match kicks off at 7:55pm AEST on Saturday. You can watch it on Stan Sport.
