The Women's Open, the fifth and final women's golf major of the year, gets underway at Royal Lytham & St Annes in England tonight (AEST). Nine Australians are in the 144-player field, but the one carrying the weight of history is Minjee Lee.

No Australian has won this championship since Karrie Webb in 2002. Lee is the one most likely to end it, and she has more than a title on the line. The 30-year-old has already won three of the five women's majors and a fourth would complete a career Grand Slam.

That is the new value of the Indian Premier League, India's Twenty20 cricket competition, which attracts a broadcast and digital audience of more than one billion. A report from investment bank Houlihan Lokey found the league's worth up 11.4% in a year, driven by two record franchise sales. Royal Challengers Bengaluru alone sold for $AU2.6 billion. On a per-match basis, only the NFL is worth more than the IPL.

Australian middle-distance runner Olli Hoare, correcting a report that linked him to witnessing a murder while on a training run in Glasgow. Hoare, the reigning CommGames men’s 1500m champion, fell in his men’s mile heat last night but appealed the result and has advanced to Saturday’s final. Meanwhile, fellow Australian Cameron Myers will also run the final after qualifying fastest and setting a new Games record of three minutes and 53.85 seconds for the event.

Only three players in the history of Major League Baseball, North America’s top professional baseball league, have hit a home run in a record eight consecutive games. Dale Long did it first in 1956 as an unknown 30-year-old on a struggling Pittsburgh team. Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr matched the feat decades later. No player has ever managed nine, and the record has stood for 70 years.

🎾 Alex de Minaur has begun his title defence at the Washington Open by beating Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-3). The result sets up a second-round match with fellow Aussie 17-year-old Cruz Hewitt, who reached the second round with his first tour-level win, beating former world No. 37 Marcos Giron. De Minaur has long been mentored by Cruz's father, former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, and has watched the youngster grow up. "He's like my older brother, I've known him basically my whole life," Cruz said of the tournament’s top seed.

🏉 The Federal Government has committed $90 million to rugby union ahead of Australia hosting the men's Rugby World Cup in 2027 and the women's edition in 2029. About $30 million will go to a grassroots legacy program aimed at growing the women's game across Australia and the Pacific, with the rest supporting tournament delivery. The 24-team men's tournament will run from October 2027.

🏉 Brisbane Broncos premiership prop Corey Jensen has retired on medical grounds after being diagnosed with blood clots on his lungs. Doctors have told the 32-year-old he must stay on blood-thinning medication permanently, ruling him out of playing a contact sport. Jensen started for the club in its 2025 grand final win, their first title since 2006, and finishes having played 153 NRL games. He is expected to move into coaching at the club.

🏏 New Zealander Stephen Fleming is set to be named England's Test coach, according to multiple reports. While the England and Wales Cricket Board is yet to confirm it, the former New Zealand captain would replace his close friend and one-time Kiwi teammate Brendon McCullum. McCullum was sacked from the Test job this month but still leads England's shorter formats. Fleming is expected to start on December's tour of South Africa, with an interim coach overseeing next month's Pakistan series.

Day 6 at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow saw Australia’s swim team reach new heights, with another four gold medals taking the Dolphins’ tally to 37 from 56 events.

Kai Taylor was the surprise winner on the night, taking out the men’s 200m freestyle from an outside lane. His mother, Hayley Lewis, won the women’s 200m freestyle from an outside lane at the 1990 CommGames. Meg Harris won two more gold medals (in the 50m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay) to take her Games tally to six and equal the record for the most decorated Aussie swimmer at a single CommGames. Kyle Chalmers also became Australia’s most decorated male CommGames swimmer after claiming a record 10th career gold medal in the men’s 50m butterfly.

Outside of swimming, the Australian team picked up three more titles across basketball and weightlifting. The men’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball team defeated England 19-13 in the gold medal match while the women’s 3x3 basketball team beat Uganda 21-11 to claim gold. 

Meanwhile, Eileen Cikamatana won her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 86kg event. She is just the third female weightlifter to win three Commonwealth Games titles in a row. Ollie Saxton added to Australia’s weightlifting success with a bronze in the men’s 94kg event. 

Track cycling gets underway, with Australia chasing gold in the team sprint and team pursuit finals.

On the athletics track, Rose Davies doubles up in the 5000m after her 10,000m gold, with Jess Hull also racing in the event. Lachlan Kennedy and Peter Bol will also run the 200m and 800m semi-finals.

The Diamonds, Australia’s netball team, continue their campaign for back-to-back netball gold against Northern Ireland. Weightlifter Ridge Barredo is also set to compete in the men's 110kg final.

FIFA has launched disciplinary action against Argentina, targeting the national football federation, several players and a member of the coaching staff, over their conduct during and after the 2026 World Cup.

Here’s what to know.

Argentina arrived in North America as reigning World Cup champions, chasing the first back-to-back titles since Brazil in 1962. It was also expected to be Lionel Messi's final World Cup. Instead, they lost the final to Spain and now sit in front of FIFA's disciplinary committee.

The charges fall into two camps: the player conduct during the final and the federation's behaviour across the tournament.

Spain won the final 1-0 in New Jersey on 19 July, needing extra time before substitute Ferran Torres secured victory with a 106th-minute strike for the country’s second men’s world title. At full-time, a scuffle broke out as Spain's substitutes ran on to celebrate, and Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes pushed Spain's Gavi over.

Paredes now faces three counts of alleged assault, the most of anyone charged. Argentina's Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala also face charges, as does Spanish midfielder Gavi.

FIFA’s case also reaches back earlier into the tournament. After Argentina beat England 2-1 in the semi-final in Atlanta, players unfurled a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas"– translated to "The Falklands are Argentine". The banner was a reference to the South Atlantic islands that Britain governs, and Argentina claims. The two nations fought a war over them in 1982. FIFA bars political messaging at its events, and it is not the first time the message has surfaced. 

The federation was fined 30,000 Swiss francs for an almost identical banner before a 2014 friendly. FIFA is also examining alleged breaches at several games, including discriminatory gestures and chants, delayed kick-offs, security failings and objects hurled from the crowd.

Those charged have been invited to respond before FIFA's disciplinary committee rules. Under FIFA's code, unsporting behaviour carries a minimum one-match ban, while assault carries a minimum three-match ban.  Paredes, in particular, could miss several of Argentina's upcoming fixtures. The federation is also likely to face a fine.
