Good evening!

One of the most highly-anticipated matches of the NBA season took place today.

Remember that blockbuster trade that everyone was talking about?

Slovenian NBA star Luka Dončić was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers for veteran Anthony Davis. It was the kind of trade that didn’t make sense for a lot of fans and had non-basketball fans talking about the NBA.

Today, Dončić wore a Lakers jersey against his former team. With 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assists, he became the third player ever to score a triple-double against all 30 teams in the NBA. And the Lakers won the match 107-99.

P.S: A triple-double is when a player records double digits in three different statistical categories (i.e. points, rebounds, assists).

The Aussies defeated the world’s number two side 3-1 in a gruelling match as part of the FIH Pro Hockey League. The Hockeyroos are Australia’s next team in action, facing the Netherlands on Saturday at 9:30pm (AEDT).

Quote of the day

“We would be honoured to visit the White House. It’s one of the things we had looked forward to doing and we look forward to receiving the invitation.”
A source associated with the Super Bowl LIX Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, speaking to CNN. In the U.S, it is a tradition that the sitting President will invite championship-winning teams to the White House to celebrate their victory. In 2017, Donald Trump rescinded his invitation to the Eagles because some players said they would refuse to attend. Rumours on social media have suggested the team will refuse their invitation this year.

Percy Hobson was the first Indigenous Australian athlete to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Hobson won the high jump at the 1962 edition of the Games in Perth. The next Indigenous Australian to win gold in track and field was none other than Cathy Freeman in the 200m and 400m at the 1994 Games in Victoria, Canada.

F1 fans at the Australian Grand Prix will be allowed to enter the track after the event, with race officials lifting a ban implemented last year. The traditional post-race track walk was banned for 2024 after fans broke through barriers onto the track while the race was still ongoing in 2023. Australian Grand Prix CEO Travis Auld said: "The Track Walk is a unique and cherished experience for our fans, and we are very excited to be able to welcome it back for 2025”.

Australia’s match against South Africa at the ICC Champions Trophy was washed out without a ball bowled last night. The winner of the highly anticipated Group B clash would have likely secured a spot at the top of the Group and in the semi-final. Instead, Australia’s advancement to the Knockout Stage will be determined by a match against Afghanistan on Friday at 8:00pm (AEDT). Captain Steve Smith said of his side’s upcoming opponents: "They're a dangerous side on their day like every team in this tournament”.

WNBL Finals resume tonight with Townsville Fire hosting Perth Lynx

The WNBL Finals will resume tonight, with the Townsville Fire hosting the Perth Lynx in game two of the semi-finals. The Fire will have the opportunity to snatch a spot in the Finals, having already won the opening match of the best-of-three semi-final series. You can watch tonight’s match from 7:30pm on Kayo or Foxtel.

Context

During the regular season, the Lynx finished second on the ladder with 16 wins from 21 matches, and the Fire finished third with 15 wins. After the Fire won the opening match of the semi-finals by just five points (92-87), this match is expected to go down to the wire.

Despite being one match down, the Lynx will head into tonight’s match with confidence, having beaten Townsville at home twice during the regular season.

Format

The other semi-final series is being played between the Sydney Flames and the Bendigo Spirit. The Flames will host the Spirit for Game 2 tomorrow and will be hoping to even up the scoring after the Spirit won 76-67 in Game 1. The Spirit topped the table during the regular season and will be confident they can edge out the Flames once again.

Radio station host Marty Sheargold issues apology for comments about the Matildas

Sydney radio station Triple M and one of its hosts, Marty Sheargold, have apologised for comments about the Matildas.

What happened

During a sports news section on Monday morning, Sheargold responded to news that the Matildas had lost to the U.S. at the SheBelieves Cup.

He said: "You know what they remind me of? Year 10 girls. All the infighting and all the friendship issues, 'the coach hates me and I hate bloody training and Michelle's being a bitch'. Now I'm sorry to undermine the whole sport, but that's what I think of it so you can stick it up your arse."

On the name of the tournament, Sheargold said: “She believes in what? It better be men.”

Finally, in response to the information that Australia is hosting the women’s Asian Cup, Sheargold said: “I’d rather hammer a nail through the head of my penis than watch that.”

Public response

Former Hockeyroo Rosie Malone published an audio clip of the radio segment on social media, which went viral. Malone did not name Sheargold or Triple M because she did not want to “reward their behaviour with publicity”.

Malone wrote: “I heard this on the radio yesterday in prime time… on the way to training and all I could think about was the young girls sitting in the car with their parents, maybe on the way to or from their own training sessions hearing this.”

Matildas midfielder Clare Wheeler replied to the post, saying: “Sport is for everyone and these views are for no one”.

Several high-profile female athletes from other sports also responded to Malone’s post. Australian swimming legend Libby Trickett commented: “I’m livid. It’s 2025 and this isn’t funny.”

Football Australia also released a statement condemning the comments made by Sheargold. Part of the sporting body’s statement read: “This incident is a stark reminder of the responsibility media outlets and personalities have in fostering respectful and constructive discussions about women’s sport and its participants.”

Apology

Following the backlash, Sheargold and Triple M both issued apologies on Wednesday morning.

Sheargold said: "Any comedy including mine can miss the mark sometimes, and I can see why people may have taken offence at my comments regarding the Matildas. I sincerely apologise"

SheBelieves Cup

The SheBelieves Cup is an annual invitational tournament hosted by the U.S. So far the Matildas have played two of their three total round-robin matches, losing to Japan 4-0 and the U.S. 2-1. The side’s final match is against Colombia tomorrow at 11:30am. You can watch the match on Paramount+.
