Milano Cortina ‘26: The headlines

In case you missed it…

🛷 Australia’s Bree Walker finished eighth in the women’s monobob at the Cortina Sliding Centre after coming into the event as a medal favourite. The two-time Olympian smiled as she embraced teammate Kiara Reddingius and waved to family in the stands. 41-year-old American Elana Meyers Taylor won the event to claim her sixth Olympic medal and first gold. Walker now turns her focus to the two-woman bobsleigh, which begins Friday (local time).

🎿 China’s Eileen Gu won silver in the women’s Big Air event in Livigno, finishing behind Canada’s Megan Oldham. Gu is now the most decorated woman in Olympic freestyle skiing history with five medals. The 22-year-old, who had not competed in Big Air since winning gold at Beijing 2022, overcame a snowstorm delay and a training head knock. Later this week, Gu could claim a sixth medal as she looks to defend her Olympic halfpipe title.

🏒 The French Ice Hockey Federation has suspended its player Pierre Crinon has for the rest of the Olympic men's ice hockey tournament after fighting Canada's Tom Wilson in a 10-2 group stage loss in Milan. While the International Ice Hockey Federation issued no extra ban, French officials cited his "provocative behaviour" following his ejection. Both players were given a 25-minute penalty at the time of the fight. Fighting is commonplace in the NHL, North America’s professional league, and France’s equivalent Ligue Magnus, but not permitted at the Olympics. Milano-Cortina is the first Games where NHL players have been released to play for their country since 2014. After the incident, Canada's Brandon Hagel said of Wilson: "That's just what Willy does. He sticks up for teammates."

⛸️ Australian short track speed skater Brendan Corey delivered a “rocket start” in his 500m heat but missed the quarterfinals after contact mid-race saw him finish fourth. The Canadian-born two-time Olympian said: “I have only a few weeks before Worlds so it’s important to me not to dwell on any of this too much. I love representing Australia and I love competing at the Olympics, but I know the result or the ranking does not reflect who I am as an athlete."

Today’s long read…

Former NRL star Matt Utai is in a serious condition after a drive-by shooting

Former NRL star Matt Utai is in hospital after being shot outside a home in Sydney’s south-west this morning.

Emergency services were called to the suburb of Greenacre at around 6am.

NSW Police confirmed a 44-year-old man was treated at the scene. They did not name the victim, but it is widely reported to be Utai.

Utai played 167 NRL games with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Wests Tigers between 2002 and 2013.

Here’s what we know.

What happened

According to a statement from NSW Police, a 44-year-old man was shot multiple times outside a Greenacre home by suspects who fled in an SUV.

He was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Police were later called to a car fire in nearby Wiley Park, where they found a burnt-out SUV.

The vehicle has been seized for forensic examination, with detectives believing the two incidents are linked.

Utai

New Zealand-born footballer Matt Utai made his NRL debut with the Bulldogs in 2002.

The powerful winger played a starring role in the Bulldogs’ premiership-winning season in 2004, scoring two tries in the Grand Final.

After eight seasons with the Bulldogs, Utai signed with Wests Tigers in 2011, where he played three seasons.

He also represented New Zealand and Samoa internationally.

What else is happening?

🏏 Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign is hanging in the balance after a shock eight-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in Kandy, their second defeat of the group stage following an earlier upset against Zimbabwe. Sent in to bat, Australia were bowled out for 181, collapsing late despite a 104-run opening stand from Mitch Marsh and Travis Head. Pathum Nissanka struck an unbeaten 100 off 52 balls as Sri Lanka chased the target with two overs to spare. With Oman to come, Australia now need Ireland and Sri Lanka to both beat Zimbabwe to stay alive.

⚽️ Macclesfield’s fairytale run in the FA Cup is over. The sixth-tier English football club, who stunned FA Cup holders Crystal Palace in the last round, fell 1-0 to Brentford after a 70th-minute own goal from Sam Heathcote. The Premier League side now advances to face West Ham United in the fifth round, ending one of this season’s great cup stories.

⛵️ Australia’s Flying Roos claimed back-to-back SailGP titles in Auckland, winning the New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in gusts up to 45 km/h. Driver Tom Slingsby led a composed display in the three-boat final against Great Britain and Spain, sealing victory after overtaking Spain at the top mark. The win lifts Australia to the top of the overall standings ahead of the Sydney Sail Grand Prix, which begins on 28 February.
