Good evening!

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev is back in the winner’s circle after 882 days.

Medvedev defeated France’s Corentin Moutet in the final of the Almaty Open in Kazakhstan to win his 21st ATP title.

Notably, each of the 29-year-old’s titles has been won in a different city.

Speaking of droughts, the Seattle Mariners are the only team in Major League Baseball (North America’s professional baseball league) to have never played in a World Series (the season finale).

After a remarkable season, the Mariners are now playing against the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship, and the winner of the seven-match series will book their place in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The series is tied at 3-3, with the decider set to be played at 11am tomorrow (AEDT).

Droughts in sport can be tough to endure for athletes and fans, but is there anything sweeter than when they’re broken?

The world record time that Mollie O’Callaghan swam in the women’s 200m short course freestyle on Saturday at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup second leg in Westmond, Illinois. O’Callaghan eclipsed the previous record of 1:50.31, held by Hong Kong’s Siobhán Haughey, to become the first woman to swim a sub-1:50 200m freestyle. In swimming, short-course records are set in 25-metre pools and long-course records are set in 50-metre pools. Australian Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus, who announced her retirement last week, still holds the long-course record of 1:52.53. Meanwhile, Kaylee McKeown also set a new short-course world record for the women’s 200m backstroke.

Quote of the day

“I was tossing and turning with emotion this week. It's been a big last 12 months since Paris, and I've had my sights set on this ever since I crossed the finish line there.”
Australian triathlete Matthew Hauser, after becoming a world champion. The 27-year-old won the men's World Triathlon Championship on Sunday in Wollongong, becoming the first Australian man or woman in 15 years to win the event. Hauser, who finished seventh in the men’s triathlon at the Paris Olympics, completed the 1.5-kilometre swim, 40km cycle, and 10km run 34 seconds ahead of Spain's David Cantero Del Campo. Also on Sunday, Germany's Lisa Tertsch won the women's world triathlon title.

Pink Floyd’s 1971 song ‘Fearless’ features a recording of fans of the English soccer club Liverpool singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. The chant was recorded at Anfield, the club’s home ground, and plays at the start and end of the track. This is even though none of the band members supported Liverpool. Singer-songwriter Roger Waters is an Arsenal fan and reportedly included the chant as a tongue-in-cheek nod to Arsenal’s 1971 FA Cup victory over Liverpool.

🎾 Jannik Sinner beat world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz to win the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh for the second straight year and take home $US6 million ($AU9.26 million) in prize money. The world No. 2 won in straight sets (6-2, 6-4), showcasing the improved serve that has defined his rise since losing to Alcaraz at the U.S. Open. The six-player event is part of Saudi Arabia’s growing investment in tennis, a move criticised by human rights groups over the country’s treatment of dissidents and women. Sinner will now head to the Vienna Open before the ATP Finals in Turin.

🏏 England have secured their place in the women’s cricket World Cup semi-finals after a tense four-run win over India in Indore on Sunday night (AEDT). England’s Heather Knight led from the front with 109 runs in her 300th international match, helping her side record a total of 288. India looked on track in reply through Smriti Mandhana’s 88 runs and Harmanpreet Kaur’s 70 runs, but late wickets and tight bowling from Nat Sciver-Brunt and Linsey Smith turned the game England’s way. India finished on 284 runs, suffering their third straight loss and slipping to fourth on the table. England is the third team through to the semi-finals, joining Australia and South Africa and leaving one place remaining in the top four.

English football club Nottingham Forest sacked Australian coach Ange Postecoglou just 17 minutes after a 3-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday. The club’s decision came 39 days after Postecoglou started at the club, making his tenure the shortest permanent reign in Premier League history. The Premier League is England’s top professional soccer competition. Postecoglou failed to win any of his eight games in charge, leaving Forest in 18th place on the table. Former Everton manager Sean Dyche and ex-Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini are among the favourites to replace him.

Marsh leads Australia to victory in opening ODI against India

Australia has opened its One Day International (ODI) series against India with a commanding seven-wicket win in Perth, led by captain Mitch Marsh’s 46 runs from 52 balls. Here’s what to know.

What happened

After four rain interruptions, Australia chased a revised target of 131 with 29 balls to spare, sealing a comfortable victory under lights. Marsh was supported by Josh Philippe, who hit 37 runs in his first ODI in four years, and debutant Matthew Renshaw, who finished with 21 runs not out. The result extends Marsh’s hot run of form after back-to-back international centuries (100 runs) and strengthens his case for a spot in the Test team ahead of the Ashes this summer.

What’s next

After winning for the first time at Perth Stadium (they had lost three matches there before Sunday), Australia leads the three-match series against India 1-0 ahead of Thursday’s second ODI in Adelaide.

The result also saw India’s eight-match winning streak in ODIs come to an end.

Piastri’s lead cut to 14 points as Verstappen wins United States Grand Prix

Australia’s Oscar Piastri has seen his Formula One world championship lead cut to just 14 points after finishing fifth at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed his fifth win of the season and narrowed the gap to 40 points, while McLaren teammate Lando Norris finished second to put himself within striking distance of Piastri with five rounds remaining.

Here’s what to know.

What happened

Piastri’s weekend began poorly after he collided with Norris in Saturday’s sprint race, forcing both McLarens to retire. On race day, Verstappen was unstoppable, converting pole position into a dominant victory by almost eight seconds over Norris, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finishing third.

It was the fourth straight race Piastri has finished behind both Verstappen and Norris, a run that has transformed what was once a comfortable lead into a tense three-way championship battle.

What they said

Despite the setback, Piastri remains confident. “I’d still rather be where I am than the other two [Norris and Verstappen]...I’ve been in fights that were as close or at this point even closer than what they are now. So I’ve got the evidence for myself that things can still turn out well and I still fully believe that I can win the championship.”

Asked whether McLaren should prioritise one driver for the title push, Piastri said, “We’re [Lando and Oscar] still so incredibly tight, and we’ve both said we wanted an opportunity to try and fight for the championship, because we deserve it. I think it’s far too close to start picking one over the other.”

What’s next

Five races and two sprint events remain, with 141 points still up for grabs. Piastri leads on 346 points, ahead of Norris on 332 and Verstappen on 306. The next stop is Mexico City, where Verstappen has won four of the past five races.
