Most footballers have swapped the boots for a microphone by the time they turn 40. Kazuyoshi Miura is still getting paid to score goals at 59 years old.

The striker, who plays in Japan’s third-tier professional soccer league and is known at home as 'King Kazu', scored Fukushima United's fifth goal in a 7-0 victory over the weekend.

It was the first goal in almost four years for the world's oldest professional footballer, whose career began when Brazilian club Santos signed him in 1986.

That is how many Tour de France titles Tadej Pogačar has now won, after the Slovenian world champion sealed his third straight yellow jersey win in Paris on Sunday. The 27-year-old joins Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain as the only riders to reach five. He rolled home safely on the final stage, which Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel won in a photo finish over his teammate Jasper Philipsen. Afterwards, Pogačar said: "I've ridden seven Tours already, and I've always finished on the podium. You might think this is a fairytale, it's incredible for me too."

Code-hopping rugby player Zac Lomax after announcing that he is committing to the PNG Chiefs from 2028. Lomax only crossed to rugby union in March, signing with Super Rugby side the Western Force after leaving the Parramatta Eels. The Port Moresby-based side are set to enter the NRL as an expansion club in 2028, and Lomax becomes their fifth signing, joining Jarome Luai, Alex Johnston, Matty Lees and Connor Watson. He is contracted to the Force until the end of 2027 before he joins the Chiefs on a three-year deal.

After winning the All-Ireland title in 1951, Mayo's Gaelic football team celebrated their way home through the village of Foxford, passing a funeral without paying their respects. An unimpressed local priest is said to have cursed the team, declaring they would never win the title again. On Sunday, 75 years later, they beat Kerry to win the 2026 All-Ireland title and finally lift the curse.

🏎️ Lando Norris claimed his first win of the F1 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, ending McLaren's wait for a victory in 2026. The reigning world champion finished ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli. Australia's Oscar Piastri led for much of the race but was held up behind Carlos Sainz. "Is he f**king stupid or what? Get out of the f**king way, you idiot!," Piastri said over team radio in a rare outburst. To add to his frustrations, he later retired from the race with a gearbox failure while in second place. Antonelli still leads the championship by 50 points.

🤽 The Australian women's water polo team, the Stingers, have won bronze at the World Cup in Sydney, beating Russia 12-9 at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday. Alice Williams scored four goals, while Tilly Kearns scored three, two days after they fell to three-time Olympic champions the U.S. in the semis. The men's Sharks were also in the third-place playoff but missed the podium, losing 16-10 to Italy. The U.S. claimed the women's gold and Greece the men's.

🏉 The NSW Waratahs won the Super Rugby Women's title for a record seventh time, beating hosts the Fijian Drua 34-17 in Ba on Saturday. It was the first grand final played in Fiji in front of a sold-out crowd of over 4,000 fans. It also marked a third straight title win for the Waratahs. They will now take on the winner of New Zealand’s Super Rugby Aupiki competition, the Auckland Blues, in the Women’s Super Rugby Championship this Saturday in Sydney. 

🏉 The Cronulla Sharks have held onto their spot in the NRL’s top four after a 48-12 win over the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval on Sunday. It marks the biggest loss so far in Kieran Foran's coaching career and leaves the 10th-placed side's finals hopes in the balance, with only six rounds left in the season. In the day's other game, the Gold Coast Titans beat the St George Illawarra Dragons 38-18 at Kogarah.

🏉 St Kilda's Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera produced one of the best individual performances of the AFL season on Sunday, gathering 46 disposals and kicking four goals in a 93-62 win over North Melbourne. The result lifts the Saints above Carlton into 10th and dents the Kangaroos' hopes of a wildcard finals spot. Earlier, Brisbane beat Port Adelaide by 59 points to stay inside the top four.

It was a strong opening weekend for Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with the country’s swimming and gymnastics stars helping send the team to the top of the medal table.

Here’s what happened on Day 3. 

World record holder Cameron McEvoy won the men's 50m freestyle in 20.97 seconds, becoming the only man to go under 21 seconds twice. McEvoy led an Australian clean sweep with Flynn Southam and Jamie Jack rounding out the podium. The Aussies claimed another 11 medals in the pool on the day, including golds from Timothy Hodge in the men’s 100m backstroke S9, Lani Pallister in the women’s 1500m freestyle, Iona Anderson in the women’s 100m backstroke, and Australia’s men’s 4x200m relay team. 

On the gymnastics floor, Breanna Scott claimed silver in the women's all-around, a day after Georgia Godwin inspired Australia to its first team gold since 2010 in an emotional comeback from an Achilles injury that ruled her out of the Paris Olympics. 

Meanwhile, Jesse Moore won bronze in the men’s individual all-around, becoming Australia’s first male gymnast to win a medal in the event since 2010. 

Day four marks the penultimate evening of swimming and will include the finals of the women's 100m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay. It will also see the first athletics events. Para sprinter Rhiannon Clarke will be one to watch as she targets her first Commonwealth gold medal in the T38 100m after silver in 2018 and bronze in 2022.

Representative football is back on the AFL agenda, with the league locking in three years of men's State of Origin matches and confirming the first-ever women’s international clash.

Here is what you need to know.

The men's AFL State of Origin is locked in until 2029. South Australia will field a team for the first time since 1999, facing Western Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth in February 2027. 

The match falls 50 years after the first AFL State of Origin game, played in 1977 between Western Australia and Victoria. 

South Australia will then host Victoria at Adelaide Oval in 2028, before Western Australia and Victoria meet again in 2029. 

The announcement follows this year's revival of the concept, when Victoria beat Western Australia by 24 points in front of 58,000 fans, ending a 27-year gap between representative games. 

The crowd and the standard of the football prompted calls to make State of Origin an annual event at the start of each season. The AFL Players’ Association report released last month also found that 97% of players in the league are interested in playing representative football.

A South Australian side could feature some of the league’s biggest names, including Brisbane’s Lachie Neale, Adelaide’s  Jordan Dawson, and Port Adelaide’s Jason Horne-Francis.

The AFL has named the captains for the inaugural AFLW Australia v Ireland match. North Melbourne's Jasmine Garner will lead Australia, while Brisbane's Orla O'Dwyer, the first Irish player to earn  All-Australian honours, will captain Ireland. 

The match will be played at North Sydney Oval on Saturday 1 August, in what will be the first professional Australian rules fixture between two countries and the first AFLW representative game since 2017. Garner featured in that match nearly 10 years ago , a Victoria v Allies clash, kicking five goals. 

The Australian side is coached by two-time North Melbourne premiership coach Darren Crocker, with Irish Sydney Swans coach Colin O'Riordan leading Ireland. 

The match highlights the growing Irish influence on the AFLW, with 46 Irish players currently on club lists and five selected in last year’s All-Australian team. It has also attracted attention for being staged at the 9,000-seat North Sydney Oval, but the sell-out crowd suggests demand has outweighed concerns about the venue.
