Good afternoon!
The Brisbane Broncos aren’t just winning trophies, they’re winning on the stock market too.
Did you know the Broncos are Australia’s only publicly listed sports club?
The club’s NRL and NRLW premiership double sent its share price soaring more than 26% by the close of trading on Monday, capping a landmark week for Brisbane, and showing that for the Broncos, winning really is good business.

The number of runs scored by Queensland batter Marnus Labuschagne in the opening innings of his first Sheffield Shield match of the season against Tasmania. Labuschagne’s knock helped Queensland reach a huge total of 612, with Matthew Renshaw adding 128 and captain Usman Khawaja 69. The 31-year-old is pushing to reclaim his spot in Australia’s Test side ahead of the five-Test Ashes series against England starting in November. Labuschagne last scored a Test century during the 2023 Ashes and was dropped for the recent series against the West Indies following Australia’s World Test Championship loss to South Africa in June.

Quote of the day
"The schedule is too much, mentally and emotionally I am at breaking point and sadly, I am not alone… If this makes me weak, then so be it, I'm weak. However, I know I am strong and will get stronger by being away, recharging, regrouping and reenergising. It's time I listened to myself for a change, my mind, my heart and my body."
Australia’s top-ranked women’s tennis player Daria Kasatkina in a statement revealing that she will step away from the tour for the remainder of the year. Kasatkina, currently ranked 19th in the world, is the third top female tennis player to end their season early, alongside Spain’s Paula Badosa and Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. The Women’s Tennis Association requires the top players to compete in at least 20 events per season, and many say they are struggling to keep up with the intense schedule. Meanwhile, Australia’s top-ranked men’s player, Alex de Minaur, is into the Round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters. With a live world ranking of number seven, he looks set to be among the eight top players who will be invited to the end-of-season ATP Finals in Turin.

In 1910, Carlton players Alex Lang and Doug Fraser were banned for 99 weeks, the longest suspensions in VFL/AFL history, after being accused of taking bribes to play poorly in the finals. Lang returned to the field in 1916, but Fraser never played again and died of influenza in 1919, aged 32.

🚴♂️ Professional cycling team Israel Premier Tech will drop “Israel” from its name after a series of protests and exclusions from major races. The move follows the team’s removal from a race in Italy over concerns it could be interrupted by pro-Palestine protesters. Protests repeatedly disrupted the Spanish Vuelta last month. Co-owner Sylvan Adams, an Israeli-Canadian billionaire, will also “step back from his day-to-day involvement” to focus on his other roles. The team said the rebrand was “essential to securing [its] future,” and promised to stay committed to developing cycling talent around the world.
⚽ Ange Postecoglou says he’s ready for a fight after Nottingham Forest’s fifth defeat in seven games left his future at the club under serious pressure. Forest lost 2-0 to Newcastle United over the weekend, extending their winless start under the Australian coach (two matches have ended in a draw). Speaking after the match, Postecoglou defended his record and said he’s never backed down from a challenge, telling reporters: “I started in Australia when I was 32-years-old in semi-professional football and I'm here in the Premier League at the age of 60. Do you reckon I lack self-belief or don't like a fight?” With the league now heading into an international break, Postecoglou said he expects to hold talks with the club’s owner about the team’s direction.

🏏 On Saturday, Australian captain Mitch Marsh smashed his first T20 international century to lead Australia to a thrilling two-wicket win over New Zealand in Mount Maunganui, sealing a 2-0 series victory. Chasing 156, Marsh scored 103 runs off 52 balls, hitting seven sixes and eight fours in a lone stand as no other Australian passed 20. The knock made Marsh just the sixth Australian to score centuries in all three formats, joining Shane Watson, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis, and Beth Mooney. Australia’s bowlers had earlier shared the wickets, with Sean Abbott taking 3-25 and Josh Hazlewood 2-26, as they retained the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy.

🏉 The All Blacks secured a 2-0 Bledisloe Cup series win with a 28-14 victory over the Wallabies in Perth on Saturday night. Despite a strong start and a near-capacity home crowd, Australia couldn’t deliver a fairytale finish for retiring prop James Slipper. Two first-half tries from New Zealand’s Quinn Tupaea proved decisive as the All Blacks capitalised on Wallaby ill-discipline and handling errors in the rain. The win marks the All Blacks’ 11th straight triumph over the Wallabies. Later in the evening, South Africa edged past Argentina 29-27 in London to win their second consecutive Rugby Championship title.

🏉 Former England rugby captain and 2003 World Cup winner Lewis Moody has revealed he’s been diagnosed with motor neurone disease. The 47-year-old said he discovered the condition two weeks ago after noticing weakness in his shoulder. Moody, who won 71 caps for England and also represented the British and Irish Lions, told the BBC the diagnosis was difficult to process, but said he feels healthy for now and is focused on spending time with his family.

Norris (left) and Piastri have already secured the 2025 Constructors’ title with six races remaining (Getty)
Piastri’s lead reduced in Formula One after controversial Singapore GP
Oscar Piastri’s lead in the Formula One drivers' championship has been reduced to 22 points after he finished fourth at the Singapore GP on Sunday.
His closest rival and McLaren teammate Lando Norris finished third to close the gap by three points, while Mercedes’ George Russell took victory from pole position and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen came home second.
Here’s what to know.
What happened
Sunday’s race saw Russell claim the fifth win of his career, but the result was overshadowed by early contact between Norris and Piastri.
Norris made an aggressive move past his teammate on the opening lap, brushing wheels as he climbed from fifth to third. The incident cost Piastri valuable time and points, while Norris finished ahead but lost further ground to Verstappen in the standings.
Although it was McLaren’s third straight race without a win, the result was enough for the team to secure back-to-back Constructors’ Championships.
Tension at McLaren
The clash has reignited tension between McLaren’s two title contenders with six races left in the season, and Verstappen now just 41 points behind Norris in the standings.
Immediately following the incident, Piastri said over the radio: "That's not fair, I'm sorry. That's not fair. If he has to avoid another car by crashing into his teammate, then that's a pretty s**t job at avoiding."
After the race, Norris said: "Anyone on the grid would have done exactly the same thing as what I did. So I think if you fault me for just going up the inside and putting my car on the inside of a big gap then, yeah, I think you shouldn't be in Formula 1."
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said: “When you are racing as a team, you cannot have exactly the same interests for the two drivers because they want to pursue their aspirations. We want to protect this ‘let them race’ concept and we know as soon as you adopt this concept you face difficulties.”

Rugby league: Broncos claim NRL and NRLW double, Australian men’s and women’s teams announced
It was a huge weekend for rugby league, with the Brisbane Broncos claiming both the men’s and women’s premierships, record TV audiences tuning in, and Australia naming its squads for the upcoming international season.
Here’s what to know.
NRL Grand Final
The Brisbane Broncos are NRL premiers for the first time since 2006 after a thrilling 26-22 win over the Melbourne Storm at Accor Stadium on Sunday.
In front of more than 80,000 fans, Reece Walsh delivered a career-best performance to lead Brisbane back from a 10-point deficit and erase the heartbreak of their 2023 grand final loss to the Penrith Panthers.
Walsh, who scored one try and set up three, was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal as player of the match.
Veteran Broncos playmaker Ben Hunt found redemption a decade after losing the 2015 grand final with Brisbane, while captain Adam Reynolds secured his second premiership 11 years after his first (with the Rabbitohs). The victory gives Brisbane its seventh NRL title and makes coach Michael Maguire just the sixth man to win premierships with two clubs (the first also with Reynolds and the Rabbitohs).
NRLW Grand Final
The Brisbane Broncos are also NRLW champions after a stunning 22-18 comeback win over the Roosters in Sunday’s grand final. Mele Hufanga sealed the victory with a powerful try in the 65th minute to claim the Karyn Murphy Medal and deliver Brisbane their first title since 2020.
The Broncos led 12-0 at half-time before the Roosters stormed back with three quick tries to take the lead. Showing composure under pressure, Brisbane rallied again, with rookie of the year Shalom Sauaso and Hufanga both scoring late to end the Roosters’ hopes of winning back-to-back titles. The result also marked the Roosters’ first and only loss of the entire season.
Record TV ratings
The NRL recorded its biggest-ever television audience on Sunday, with 4.46 million people tuning in to watch Brisbane’s win over Melbourne. The decider drew more viewers than this year’s AFL grand final (averaging 4.18 million) and was the highest-rating program of the night across every major city except Adelaide.
The NRLW grand final also passed one million viewers, up 36% on last year.
Kangaroos and Jillaroos squads named
On Monday, the Kangaroos named a 24-player squad for the first Rugby League Ashes Tour in more than two decades. The team includes seven players from Sunday’s NRL grand final, with Panthers captain Isaah Yeo set to skipper a side that blends experience with seven debutants. Coach Kevin Walters said the squad “knows what it takes to win” ahead of Tests in London, Liverpool and Leeds.
Also on Monday, the Jillaroos named a 21-player squad for the Pacific Championships, led by co-captains Kezie Apps and Ali Brigginshaw. The squad features five debutants and several NRLW stars ahead of next year’s World Cup. Australia will face Fetu Samoa in Brisbane on 26 October and New Zealand at Eden Park on 2 November. Coach Jess Skinner said the team is expected “to perform at the highest level.”
