Good afternoon!

It’s the day of the week that proved even LeBron James can't own everything.

Back in 2019, the NBA superstar attempted to trademark the phrase "Taco Tuesday" to use for a podcast and merchandise line.

The US government shut him down, ruling that the term was "commonplace" and belonged to the public, not him.

So, enjoy your Tuesday and maybe even treat yourself to some guilt-free tacos.

The number of times that Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur has been awarded the Newcombe Medal. The 26-year-old received his fourth medal last night after a stellar season, which saw him finish with a career-high year-end ranking of world no.7. The Newcombe Medal is given to the most outstanding elite Australian player each year. John Newcombe, the medal’s namesake and seven-time grand slam singles champion, said: "De Minaur's progression has been fantastic — each year he gets that little bit better. And I think myself, like everybody else says, 'Oh, come on, Alex, if you just had a better serve, you'd be in the top four.' So let's hope that he can do something about that."

Quote of the day

“Unfortunately, Josh won't be a part of the Ashes. It's really flat for him. A couple of setbacks we didn't see coming. We thought he'd play a huge part in the series. We really feel for him that he won't get that opportunity."
Australian cricket coach Andrew McDonald confirming today that fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out for the remainder of the Ashes series. Hazlewood has been battling lingering hamstring and Achilles issues that forced him to miss the Tests in Sri Lanka and much of the India series last summer. Meanwhile, captain and fellow fast bowler Pat Cummins is expected to return for the third test in Adelaide at full fitness.

Random fact of the day

In 1923, a jockey named Frank Hayes won a steeplechase race at Belmont Park in New York despite having a fatal heart attack mid-race. His body remained in the saddle, and the horse, Sweet Kiss, crossed the finish line first. He is the only known jockey to win a race after passing away.

Premier League giants Chelsea and Tottenham are officially heading down under for the Sydney Super Cup in 2026. The English heavyweights will play local sides Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers, before facing off in a blockbuster London Derby at Accor Stadium on 1 August. The biggest cheer might be reserved for the women’s fixture. Chelsea Women will also make the trip to play the A-League All Stars on 12 August, meaning Matildas icons Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter, who both play for the Women’s Super League club, will be back playing on home soil.

🏏 The Women’s Big Bash League finals begin tonight with ‘The Knockout’ clash between the Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars at the WACA. The Scorchers enter in strong form, finishing the regular season in third place to secure home advantage. Meanwhile, the Stars have lost three consecutive games and finished fourth. The Stars remain unchanged, relying on Aussie representatives Meg Lanning and Annabel Sutherland to turn their season around. The equation is simple: the winner travels to Sydney to face the Sydney Sixers in ‘The Challenger’ on Thursday, while the loser is eliminated. The winner of ‘The Challenger’ will advance to ‘The Final’ against the Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday.

Hollywood stars turned football club owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are bringing in financial heavyweights to help push Wrexham FC towards the Premier League. The duo have sold a minority stake to U.S. firm Apollo Sports Capital, though they remain the club's majority owners. The fresh cash is earmarked for the redevelopment of the club’s stadium and the surrounding area. With Wrexham currently sitting mid-table in the Championship (the second tier of English professional football) after three straight league promotions, the owners say this investment brings the "world-class partners" needed to reach the top flight.

Aussies strike gold at snowsports World Cup ahead of Winter Olympics

Australian snowsports stars Jakara Anthony and Matt Graham have kicked off their Winter Olympic season in spectacular fashion, claiming a historic double gold in the men’s and women’s moguls events at the World Cup in Ruka, Finland.

What happened

Anthony, who is the defending Olympic champion, won her first gold medal in 12 months after a broken collarbone sidelined her for most of last season. After crashing out in the season opener just 24 hours earlier, the 27-year-old bounced back to secure the 24th World Cup victory of her career.

Veteran Matt Graham also broke a drought, nailing the final run to claim his first win since 2023. The 31-year-old is a three-time Olympian and won a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

The results in Ruka mark only the third time Australia has won both men’s and women’s events on the same day. Remarkably, Graham has been part of all three.

What's next

The team now faces an extended break after the next two scheduled events in Sweden and Georgia were cancelled. They will resume competition at Val Saint-Côme in Canada on 9 January, giving them one final tune-up before the Winter Olympics begin in Livigno on 10 February.

Eli Katoa will not play in 2026 after a serious head injury while playing for Tonga (Getty)

NRL proposes heavy sanctions against Tonga rugby league staff following Katoa head injury

The NRL has proposed heavy sanctions against medical officials following the investigation into Melbourne Storm star Eli Katoa’s traumatic brain injury.

Here’s what to know.

Context

Three staff members from the Tongan national team are facing suspensions of two years or more after the Melbourne Storm star was cleared to play despite serious safety concerns.

The incident occurred during the Pacific Championship Test between Tonga and New Zealand at Eden Park on 2 November. It was revealed that Katoa had collided with teammate Lehi Hopoate during the warm-up but took the field regardless.

During the match, he sustained two further head knocks. The situation escalated drastically when Katoa experienced seizure activity on the sideline and was rushed to an Auckland hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for a brain bleed.

He remained in New Zealand for weeks for recovery and has since been ruled out of the entire 2026 NRL season.

Investigation

The NRL launched an immediate investigation, and the findings were released yesterday. The league said it had identified “serious concerns” about a “breakdown in communication” between the medical professionals involved.

Specifically, the NRL alleges there was a failure to share information that would have likely ruled Katoa out of the game.

Breach notices

The NRL has issued breach notices to four officials. The proposed penalties would see both the Head Doctor and Assistant Doctor banned from working with any club or representative team for no less than two years.

The Head Trainer is also facing a two-year suspension, while the Medical Assistant was issued a formal warning.

In addition to the bans, all individuals will be required to undergo further training on the NRL’s head injury and concussion policies.

The officials have five business days to respond to the breach notices.
