Friday’s headlines
Here’s what’s making news today…
🏉 Veteran fly-half James O’Connor has been retained in the Wallabies’ 34-man squad for the two decisive Rugby Championship matches against New Zealand. His selection comes despite his move to English club Leicester earlier this week. Tom Lynagh and Tane Edmed have also been selected as potentials for fly-half, while Ben Donaldson missed out. Jake Gordon, touted as coach Joe Schmidt’s preferred scrum-half, also returns from a hamstring injury that forced him to miss the opening four matches of The Rugby Championship. Australia currently leads the Championship on 11 points going into the final two Test matches against the All Blacks, which double as Bledisloe Cup fixtures. The first will be played at Eden Park in Auckland on 27 September.

🏀 Milton Doyle guided Melbourne United to an 88-84 win over his old side, the Tasmania JackJumpers, to open NBL26. Doyle scored 22 points, including 11 in the final four minutes, to silence a sold-out MyState Bank Arena in Glenorchy. The game was a thriller with more than 30 lead changes, but United’s deep roster pulled through late. Tyson Walker added 14 points while Finn Delany, Shea Ili and Jesse Edwards all chipped in. For Tasmania, new imports Bryce Hamilton and David Johnson combined for 46. The NBL continues tonight with the NZ Breakers taking on the Brisbane Bullets at 5:30pm (AEST).

🏟️ Australia had another impressive night at the world athletics championships with several athletes qualifying for finals. In the women’s 800m, national record holder Claudia Hollingsworth and Abbey Caldwell both produced strong performances in their heats to qualify for the semi-finals tonight. Jess Hull will also race in the semi-finals after she was tripped up in the heat and made a successful appeal. Rose Davies and Linden Hall both qualified for the women’s 5000m final and high jumpers Eleanor Patterson and Nicola Olyslagers both cruised into the final after clearing 1.92 metres. Gout Gout and Torrie Lewis missed out on the finals of the men’s and women’s 200m after both finishing fourth in their respective semi-finals. Lewis finishes the event ranked 12th in the world while Gout impressed on his senior debut at just 17-years-old.

🏉 The Sydney Roosters have issued a major internal sanction for star player Victor Radley after media reports linked him to an alleged drug-supply claim involving former teammate Brandon Smith. Radley, who has not been charged by police, was suspended for 10 NRL matches without pay and must also donate $30,000 to St Vincent’s Hospital for cancer research. The club said that while there is speculation, Radley has brought disrepute to the Roosters and described his punishment as “the heaviest sanction ever imposed on a player in the club’s history”. He has accepted the punishment and offered a public apology to fans, sponsors, teammates and the club.

Sport to keep an eye on this weekend
AFL Preliminary Final: Geelong Cats v Hawthorn Hawks
Talking points: The AFL Preliminary Finals are here. The winners of this weekend’s matches will get a ticket to the big dance (aka the AFL Grand Final) next weekend. Of the seven previous meetings between the Geelong Cats and the Hawthorn Hawks, the Cats have come out on top in six. In the Hawks' favour, they have not lost to the Cats in the four sudden-death finals matches they have played against each other since 1963. The other preliminary final will be played between Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions on Saturday at 5:15pm, also at the MCG.
How to watch: The match begins at 7:40pm tonight. You can watch both preliminary finals on Channel 7, Foxtel, or Kayo.

International cricket series decider: Australia v India ODI
Talking points: With the cricket World Cup looming later this month, both India and Australia are out to prove themselves as the team to beat at this year’s tournament. This is the third and final match of the series between the two countries. Australia won the first match by 88 runs before India struck back in the second with a record 102-run victory. Who will rise to the occasion?
How to watch: The match begins at 6:00pm tomorrow. You can watch it on Kayo or Foxtel.

NRL Semi-Final: Penrith Panthers v Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs
Talking points: The Bulldogs face a massive challenge when they meet the Panthers this weekend in a sudden death semi-final. Canterbury limp into the clash after four losses from their past five games, while Penrith are chasing history as they look to become the first side outside the top four to win the premiership and extend their dynasty to five straight titles. All eyes will be on Stephen Crichton, who has been named in the extended squad in what would be a remarkable recovery from injuring his ankle last week. The other semi-final will be between the minor-premiership winning Canberra Raiders and Cronulla Sharks on Saturday at 7:50pm (AEST). The winners of each will advance to the preliminary finals.
How to watch: The match begins at 4:05pm on Sunday. You can watch it on Channel 9, Foxtel, or Kayo.
