Good evening!

There is no shortage of sporting families where more than one generation has played at the professional level. But it’s rare for two generations to share the same sporting field.

Yes, we spoke about this a couple of months ago when LeBron and Bronny James became the first father-son duo to share an NBA court.

Now, English Premier League player Ashley Young might play against his son Tyler in an FA Cup match. 39-year-old Ashley plays for Everton, and 18-year-old Tyler plays for Peterborough United; the two teams will play each other in January.

As athletes continue to increase their longevity in sport, could this become more and more common?

"The decision to step away from Rugby hasn't been easy… I will forever be grateful for the experiences, skills and good mates... it feels like the right time in my career to pursue this dream I've had for a long time. Thank you to the NFL IPP for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity".
Australian rugby union star Jordan Petaia in a post to Instagram officially announcing that he is stepping away from rugby with the intention of trialling to play in the NFL. Petaia played 31 games for the Wallabies and became the youngest men’s player to represent Australia at two rugby World Cups. The 2025 Davis Cup schedule has been released and will see the Australian men’s tennis team take on Sweden in the opening round. The Aussies have not won since 2003 and lost in this year’s semi-final to eventual champions Italy. If they beat Sweden in January, Australia will play the winner of Belgium and Chile for a place in the Final 8 to be played in Bologna, Italy in November.

American skier Mikaela Shiffrin crashed at a World Cup event in Vermont over the weekend, puncturing her abdomen and severely damaging her muscles. The 29-year-old, who holds the record for most World Cup event wins, was vying for her 100th victory. On Instagram, Shiffrin said  her injuries have sidelined her for at least a few weeks.

Australian tennis legend Neale Fraser has died aged 91. A member of the International and Australian Tennis Halls of Fame, Fraser was the world’s no.1 ranked player in 1959 and won 19 major titles across singles (3), doubles (11), and mixed doubles (5). The Victorian was the last man to complete a triple crown (win the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles all at the same major tournament). He won the Davis Cup a total of eight times, four times as a player and four as the non-playing captain. Fraser was the captain of the Australian team for a record 24 campaigns between 1970 and 1993.

Dozens killed in crowd crush at football match in Guinea

At least 56 people were killed in a crowd crush following a controversial red card at a soccer match in Nzerekore, Guinea.

What happened

The match was the final of a tournament being played in honour of the interim president Mamady Doumbouya, a military leader who led a coup to seize control of the West African nation and oust former President Alpha Condé in 2021.

According to witnesses, a red card late in the match incited the violence. Members of the crowd began throwing rocks and police responded with tear gas. The combination led to a state of mass panic as members of the crowd tried to flee the stadium.

What they said

A witness told Reuters: "The stone throwing started and the police joined in, firing tear gas. In the rush and scramble that followed, I saw people fall to the ground, girls and children trampled underfoot. It was horrible".

Former President Condé said in a statement: "In a context where the country is already marked by tensions and restrictions, this tragedy highlights the dangers of irresponsible organisation".

Jack Doohan will race in his his first F1 GP this weekend (Getty)

Aussie F1 driver Jack Doohan to debut at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Australian Jack Doohan will make his Formula One debut with Alpine at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, replacing Esteban Ocon. The move means Ocon is eligible to drive for Haas at the end-of-season test after the Abu Dhabi GP, before he joins the American team full-time next season.

What happened?

Alpine confirmed on Monday that Doohan would race this weekend after the team released Ocon from his contract. Doohan became Alpine’s full-time reserve this year and drove the car in an official practice session in June, but has not raced a Grand Prix.

It had already been confirmed earlier this year that Doohan would move into a full-time driver role alongside Frenchman Pierre Gasly. Meanwhile, Ocon will join rookie Oliver Bearman at Haas.

Ocon has been with the British team for five years. In 2021, he claimed Alpine’s first and only Grand Prix victory in Hungary in 2021. The 28-year-old’s final race with Alpine yesterday saw him start at the back of the grid and crash out on the opening turn.

Who is Jack Doohan?

Before 21-year-old Doohan became the full-time reserve for Alpine in 2024, he rose through the lower tiers of racing, F3 and F2. He was recruited as an F1 reserve last year while still racing in the F2.

His role as the reserve mainly consists of driving in the team’s simulator so that they can develop a more thorough understanding of the car.

Notably, Jack is the son of motorsports royalty Mick Doohan. Mick won five consecutive MotoGP World Championships during his career.

What they said:

Doohan posted on X: “Stoked to be racing in Abu Dhabi this weekend for my debut Grand Prix. Grateful to [Alpine] for the trust and for giving me this opportunity. Also very grateful to Esteban who I’ve learnt a great deal from over the last two years. He’s been beneficial to my learning and development in Formula 1 and wish him the best for his future. Focused on the job at hand this week and working with Pierre to help the team achieve its objective.”

Alpine boss Oliver Oakes said: “I guess you could say it’s good to get Jack in early, I think you could say from Esteban’s side it’s good to move on early. I think it suits everybody, so I think the discussion was quite natural really, and I think Esteban’s been a big part of this team as well and from both sides, it suits each other.”
