Good afternoon!

Jannik Sinner has now won 17 matches in a row, claimed the first three ATP Masters 1000 titles of 2026, and returned to world No. 1.

The only other man to win those three tournaments (Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo) in the same year?

Novak Djokovic, in 2015.

Sinner beat his rival Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the Monte Carlo final on Sunday, adding a first clay-court Masters title to his collection.

Alcaraz still leads Sinner 10-7 in their all-time head-to-head. Only time will tell whether the Spaniard can hold his edge.

Quote of the day

“It doesn’t feel real, to be honest. You put so much hard work into your craft and to be rewarded for it is pretty cool. I just feel grateful to be in this position and hopefully lead the way for other women to get what they deserve as well.”
Australian basketball player Alanna Smith speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald after signing a three-year “supermax” deal with the Dallas Wings worth close to $6 million –  the richest contract in Australian women's basketball history. The Wings compete in the WNBA, the top U.S. women’s league. Smith, 28, was named the WNBA Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2025 and won bronze with the Australia women's national basketball team at the Paris Olympics. Her deal follows a new collective bargaining agreement in the WNBA, which includes a rise in player salaries.

The pair broke clear with 40km to go and went head-to-head over the final stretch, with Van Aert edging past on the final bend after 258km of punishing cobblestone roads in northern France. In the women's race, Germany's Franziska Koch produced an upset, beating  Dutch veteran Marianne Vos by less than a wheel. Rory McIlroy wears the Green Jacket for the second year in a row (Getty)

McIlroy makes history as fourth golfer to win Masters back to back

Rory McIlroy has won the 2026 Masters, becoming just the fourth player to claim back-to-back green jackets – after Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods.

What happened

The Northern Irishman finished at 12-under-par, one shot clear of American world number one Scottie Scheffler. It marks his sixth major title and second at Augusta National, where he completed his career Grand Slam last year.

McIlroy built a record six-shot lead through 36 holes (the halfway mark) but saw it evaporate during a shaky third round on Saturday. On Sunday, he lost the lead early as Cameron Young and Justin Rose surged ahead, before clawing back with birdies at the 7th, 8th, 12th, and 13th.

“It took me 10 years to win my fifth major, and then my sixth one’s come pretty soon after it. I’m not putting a number on it, but I certainly don’t want to stop here,” McIlroy said.

What about the Australians?

Jason Day was the only Australian in contention, sitting tied for fifth heading into Sunday. But a final-round 75, including a double-bogey on the seventh, saw him slip to a tie for 12th.

"Actually hit 13 greens and played pretty good. Just didn't capitalise on any opportunities," Day said.

Fellow Aussie Adam Scott finished tied for 24th after a closing 70. Next month's PGA Championship will mark the 2013 Masters champion's 99th consecutive major appearance. Cameron Smith and Min Woo Lee both missed the cut.

Gout Gout set a new national record in the men’s 200m on Sunday (Getty)

Track stars shine at history-making Australian Athletics Championships

The future of Australian athletics looks bright after several standout performances at the Australian Athletics Championships over the weekend.

The championships are held annually to determine the country’s best track and field athletes, and often serve as selection trials for major international competitions.

Here are some of the athletes to watch.

Sprinters set the standard

In the men’s 200m, 18-year-old Gout Gout set a world under-20 record and a new Australian record of 19.67 seconds to win the national title. Gout’s time would have seen him win the bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Second-place finisher Aidan Murphy also ran the course in less than 20 seconds, with a time of 19.88.

Lakara Stallan won her first ever national medal, winning gold in the women’s 200m in 23.25 seconds. The 22-year-old’s title came at the end of a season disrupted by injuries.

In the men’s 100m, Lachlan Kennedy was crowned Australia’s fastest man for the first time, clocking 9.96 seconds in the final. The 22-year-old had also broken the 10-second barrier in the heats a day earlier.

Meanwhile, Georgia Harris won her first ever national medal, winning gold in the women’s 100m in 11.50 seconds. After the race, the 21-year-old spoke to ABC about her epilepsy diagnosis: “With the pills I'm on, it makes me more tired than the average human, so training takes a lot out of me, but I love it.”

Hull recovers from 1500m fall

Jess Hull began the championships with hopes for three national titles in the 800m, 1500m (her silver medal event at the 2024 Olympics), and 5000m. Then she tripped and fell in the 1500m.

After the fall, Hull withdrew from the 800m but opted to compete in the 5000m on Sunday. She ran a 61-second final lap to finish in 15:13.21 and take out the national title.

Cameron Myers makes history

19-year-old Cameron Myers became the first person to break 3:30 for the men’s 1500m on Australian soil, winning in 3:29.85. He then backed it up to win the men’s 5000m the next day.

Following his victory in the 5000m, Myers said: “I like the pressure. I feel like pressure creates diamonds and it gives me something to strive for. You either rise up or you melt down and I like that pressure, it’s good for me.”

What’s next?

Several athletes have already been selected for the Australian team heading to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this year, including Kennedy, Myers, pole vaulter Nina Kennedy, and high jumper Nicola Olyslagers. The final team will be confirmed in June.

"I think I can win the whole thing," Kennedy said after his selection. "I'm confident and I know I can go faster."

Gout will not race at the Commonwealth Games, instead focusing on the World Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in August.
