Good evening!
Australian Josh Giddey is the biggest name in basketball today after he scored a stunning half-court shot on the full-time buzzer.
The shot helped the Chicago Bulls clinch an upset victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.
In his first season with the Bulls, Giddey has been one of the franchise’s standout players, averaging 14.1 points and leading assists and steals. The 22-year-old grew up in Melbourne and was drafted to the NBA in 2021.

The number of years since the NSW Waratahs have won five of their opening six games of the season. The Waratahs are seeking a fifth win this evening when they play the Hurricanes at 5:05pm. Tonight’s match will also see Waratahs centre Joey Walton make his captaincy debut, with Jake Gordon injured, and Joseph-Aukuso Sua’ali’i will return to the side after being sidelined with a foot injury for several weeks.

Quote of the day
“It has been difficult to see Liam struggle with the RB21 at the first two races and as a result we have collectively taken the decision to make an early switch. We came into the 2025 season with two ambitions, to retain the world drivers’ championship and to reclaim the world constructors’ title and this is a purely sporting decision.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner’s announcement that New Zealand’s Liam Lawson is being dropped and will continue the season with Red Bull’s feeder team, Racing Bulls. The 23-year-old had a poor start to the season, recording a DNF at the Australian GP and finishing 16th at last weekend’s Chinese GP. Yuki Tsunoda, who has been driving for Racing Bulls, will replace Lawson.

Random fact of the day
In the 1916 VFL season, only four teams competed because of World War I. As a result, Fitzroy became the first (and presumably last) Australian rules football club to win both the wooden spoon and the premiership. The club lost nine of its 12 regular season matches and won all three of its finals.

In case you missed it…
The 2025 season of Major League Baseball has kicked off. This year’s ‘Opening Day’ saw 28 out of 30 teams in action. In a regular season, every team will play a whopping 162 games, before the top 12 teams advance to the playoffs in October. Reigning champions the Los Angeles Dodgers, featuring phenom Shohei Ohtani, remain the team to beat.

The final four teams for the Women’s Champions League are set, after Barcelona and Chelsea secured their places in the semi-finals this morning (AEDT). Chelsea went into its second leg match with Manchester City (featuring Matilda Mary Fowler) two goals behind on aggregate, but was able to turn the margin around with a 3-0 victory. Barcelona cruised past Wolfsburg, winning their second leg match 6-1 to extend the aggregate to 10-2. In the semi-finals, Chelsea will play Barcelona, and French club Lyon will play Arsenal. Since 2016, the competition has been won by either Lyon or Barcelona, with the latter winning three of the past four editions.

Four-time defending NRL premiers the Penrith Panthers slumped to their third straight loss for the first time since 2019 last night, losing to the South Sydney Rabbitohs 28-18. The Rabbitohs, who are a new and improved outfit under returning coach Wayne Bennett, scored 28 unanswered points in the first half. Penrith made a spirited comeback in the second half, but it was too little, too late. Week four of the NRL continues tonight with the Roosters hosting the Titans, followed by a South East Queensland derby between the Broncos and Dolphins.

Russian Paralympian stripped of medals 11 years after Sochi Games
A Russian Paralympian has been stripped of his medals from the 2014 Sochi Games for breaching anti-doping laws. Nikolay Polukhin won one gold and two silver medals in Sochi, across the Men's Para-biathlon visually impaired events over 15 kilometres, 12.5 kilometres, and 7.5 kilometres.
Context
Following an investigation, the International Paralympic Committee's independent anti-doping tribunal found that urine samples that Polukhin provided had been tampered with. The investigation found clean urine samples had been swapped for samples that would have tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ). TMZ is a heart medication that can increase endurance and enhance athletic performance. It is on the World Anti-Doping Association’s (WADA) banned substances list. The swap came during what the IPC described as a “state-sponsored doping programme”.
What they said
The IPC’s Head of Anti-Doping, Jude Ellis, said: “Following analysis of a huge amount of data obtained through WADA investigations, Nikolay Polukhin’s case met the evidential threshold to charge the athlete with an anti-doping rule violation. The resolution of this case draws a line under what has been a long-running process into potential anti-doping rule violations by Russian athletes at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.”

Winning doesn’t seem to get old for Novak (Getty)
Djokovic edges closer to 100th title while Sabalenka cruises into final at Miami Open
Novak Djokovic has powered his way into the semi-finals of the Miami Open, beating American Sebastian Korda in straight sets (6-3, 7-6). Meanwhile, in the women’s draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka remains the firm favourite to win the tournament after a straight sets victory over Jasmine Paolini (6-2, 6-2) to advance to her first Miami Open final.
Men’s Draw
Djokovic’s win against Korda makes him the oldest player to make it to the semi-finals of a Masters 1000 event. Aged 37 years and 10 months, the Serbian is three months older than Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer was when he made the final four at the same event in 2019. Djokovic, who is playing Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-final, is now just two wins away from his seventh Miami Open title and 100th tour-level title overall.
In the other semi-final, American world number four Taylor Fritz will play Czechia’s Jakub Menšík. Fritz beat Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in a hard-fought three-set contest, and unseeded Menšík beat 17th seed Frenchman Arthur Fils in straight sets. Earlier in the tournament, Fils upset the top seed, Germany’s Alexander Zverev.
Women’s draw
After world number two Iga Świątek lost to Filipino wild card Alexandra Eala in a shock upset, the Miami Open looks to be Sabalenka’s to lose. The Belarusian will head into the final against American world number four Jessica Pegula as the steady favourite.
Sabalenka and Pegula have played each other eight times before, with Sabalenka coming out on top six times. Their most recent match was last year’s U.S. Open final, which Sabalenka won in straight sets.
How to watch
You can watch the Miami Open in Australia via beIN Sports or tennistv.com. Both require a subscription.
The women’s final will be played on Sunday 30 March (AEDT), and the men’s final will be played on Monday 31 March (AEDT).
