Good afternoon!
Have you been looking to spend some time away from your phone? The Masters might be the place to start.
Augusta National, the course where golf’s first major of the season is held, bans mobile phones entirely.
That means the thousands of patrons who make the trip to Georgia each year have to actually watch the golf. No scrolling, no filming, no texting. If they need to make a call, there are landlines available around the course.
In 2026, that might be the most radical rule in sport.

Friday’s headlines
Here’s what’s making news today…
🏉 The Adelaide Crows opened the AFL’s Gather Round with a 114-86 win over Carlton at Adelaide Oval on Thursday night. Josh Rachele starred for the Crows, kicking four goals in the first half as his side turned a seven-point deficit into a 24-point half-time lead. The Blues never recovered. The win is the Crows' second in five games this season. For Carlton, it is a fourth loss in five, increasing pressure on coach Michael Voss.

🏉 In the NRL, the Bulldogs produced one of the upsets of the season so far, ending the Panthers' unbeaten 2026 record with a 32-16 victory on Thursday night. Without injured captain Stephen Crichton and coming off two straight losses, the Bulldogs raced to a 16-0 lead before the Panthers fought back with three unanswered tries to level the game. Jacob Preston and Sitili Tupouniua then crossed for the Bulldogs to seal a famous win and spoil Nathan Cleary's 200th NRL appearance. It was Penrith's first loss of 2026, with the Bulldogs now three wins from six.

🏌 Reigning champion Rory McIlroy shares the lead at the Masters after round one at Augusta National, level with American Sam Burns. McIlroy is chasing back-to-back titles, something only three players in the tournament's history have achieved. Australia's Jason Day is also in contention, only two shots back and tied for third place. Meanwhile, two-time champion and world number one Scottie Scheffler is three shots behind and tied for sixth. As for the other Australians in the field, 2013 champion Adam Scott is tied for 17th, with Cameron Smith (40th) and Min Woo Lee (73rd) both well down the field.

Sport to keep an eye on this weekend…
Surfing: Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach
Talking points: The quarter-finals of the opening event on the World Surf League Championship Tour are underway at Bells Beach today, with a men’s and women’s champion set to be crowned tomorrow. On the women's side, two Australians are still in contention — defending Bells champion Isabella Nichols and reigning world champion Molly Picklum. The men's draw features no Australians but is wide open after an upset-filled week that eliminated every past Bells winner still on tour, guaranteeing a first-time men's champion when the bell rings tomorrow.
How to watch: You can watch the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach live on WorldSurfLeague.com, YouTube, Foxtel, Kayo, and the WSL app.

AFL: Hawthorn Hawks v Western Bulldogs
Talking points: The ladder-leading Western Bulldogs take on Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night in one of the standout games of Gather Round. The Bulldogs are the only undefeated side in the competition at four wins and no losses, but head in with injury concerns, with ruckman Tim English and midfielder Ed Richards both carrying knocks from last week's win over Essendon. Hawthorn are three wins and one loss and have won their past four regular season games against the Bulldogs, making this a genuine contest despite the ladder difference. The Hawks are yet to win a Gather Round game in three previous appearances.
How to watch: The match kicks off at 7:35pm on Saturday. You can watch it on Foxtel and Kayo.
International Rugby Union: Wallaroos v Canada
Talking points: The Wallaroos take on world number two Canada in the Pacific Four Series opener in Sacramento on Sunday, chasing their first win over the Canadians in eight attempts. In their two meetings last year, Canada won 45-7 in the Pacific Four Series before knocking Australia out of the World Cup quarter-finals 46-5. The Wallaroos come into Sunday's match following a 33-15 win over Fijiana last month. Interim coach Sam Needs has reinforced the forward pack, with Tiarah Minns starting alongside experienced lock Michaela Leonard and captain Siokapesi Palu Sekona shifting to number eight. Winger Desiree Miller, who scored Australia's only try in that quarter-final, will reach 25 caps on Sunday.
How to watch: The match kicks off at 12pm on Sunday. You can watch it on Stan Sport.
