"My upbringing was very much characterised by fear. Everything was controlled and decided for me. There was an enormous amount of manipulation. As a teenager I felt I had no free will or say in anything."

🏎️ After two races with Red Bull this season, Liam Lawson will reportedly be replaced by Yuki Tsunoda at next week’s Japanese Grand Prix. The 23-year-old New Zealander did not finish the Australian GP and finished 16th in last weekend’s Chinese GP. He will reportedly return to Red Bull’s feeder team, Racing Bulls, which is the team Tsunoda has been driving for. The promotion will mean Tsunoda’s first race with Red Bull will be at his home grand prix.

🏐 With Super Netball set to begin on 5 April, Netball Australia (NA) has concluded its investigation into accusations against the Queensland Firebirds of a ‘toxic culture’ and gaslighting. Socceroos beat China in World Cup Qualifier

The Socceroos remain unbeaten in the Tony Popovic era after defeating China 2-0 in Hangzhou last night. With just two games remaining in this round of World Cup Qualification, the Aussies are on track to secure the second spot in Group C and earn an automatic qualification.

What happened

Australia was welcomed to the Hangzhou Olympic Stadium by a record crowd of over 70,000 Chinese fans.

After scoring two goals last week, Jackson Irvine opened Australia’s account last night with a superb goal from inside the box in the 16th minute. Nishan Velupillay, who also scored last week, then extended Australia’s lead to 2-0 in the 29th minute. In just four matches for the Socceroos, Velupillay has scored three goals and established himself as one of the side’s most potent offensive weapons.

How will Australia qualify?

In June, the Socceroos will play against Japan and Saudi Arabia to conclude this round of World Cup Qualifying. Japan, sitting seven points clear at the top of Group C, has already secured one of the two automatic qualification spots available.

The Socceroos sit in second place, three points ahead of Saudi Arabia in third and four points ahead of Indonesia in fourth. There is plenty of work to do, given that the final two matches in this round will be against the two toughest opponents in the group. Australia will play Japan on 5 June and Saudi Arabia on 10 June.

World Athletics to introduce compulsory gender eligibility test for women’s events

World Athletics has become the first Olympic sport to introduce mandated chromosome testing for female athletes. Athletes wishing to participate in women’s track and field events will be required to test for the presence of the Y chromosome, typically present in males.

Context

The introduction of gender eligibility is the latest in a series of moves which World Athletics President Sebastian Coe says will guarantee the “integrity of women’s sport”. In 2023, the governing body banned athletes who have gone through the early stages of male puberty from women’s events.

It then announced in February it would seek to impose a stricter policy to ban athletes with differences in sex development (DSD), also known as intersex. These athletes are assigned female at birth, but may experience some aspects of male puberty. World Athletics’ current rules require these athletes to lower their testosterone levels to a certain level for six months before they are allowed to compete.

World Athletics said its decision is backed by research which shows that individuals assigned male at birth have an advantage in athletic events, even without going through puberty.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe told reporters that athletes would only have to take the gender eligibility test once in their careers.

Legality

When asked if the test would face legal opposition, Coe said: “We’ve been to the Court of Arbitration [For Sport] on our DSD regulations. They’ve been upheld, and they’ve again been upheld after appeal. We will doggedly protect the female category, and we’ll do whatever is necessary”.

Reaction

Australian Olympian Linden Hall told ABC Sport: "I definitely have some concerns over athlete welfare in that space. It seems a bit too close to medical information and things like that. I'm not sure of the processes and how it's all going to be done. But I just hope it's done appropriately and with care and respects the athletes' privacy.”

What’s next?

Coe told reporters the timeline of implementing the testing would be decided “within the next few weeks”. It is not clear whether or not it will be in place before the World Championships in September.
