Good afternoon!

The Rugby Championship is here to stay.

SANZAAR, the governing body for Super Rugby and The Rugby Championship, has confirmed the tournament will continue through 2027, 2028, and 2029, ending months of speculation about its future.

In 2026, South Africa and New Zealand will instead play a special home-and-away tour, while Australia and Argentina host separate Tests.

The full four-nation Rugby Championship returns in 2027, running in the same year as the World Cup in Australia.

It’s part of a new global calendar that also includes the Nations Championship, featuring the SANZAAR teams plus Fiji, Japan, and Europe’s Six Nations sides.

Friday’s headlines

Here’s what’s making news today…

🏏 Australia has qualified for the Women’s Cricket World Cup semifinals after a dominant 10-wicket win over Bangladesh. Captain Alyssa Healy smashed her second straight century, finishing unbeaten on 113 runs from 73 balls, while opener Phoebe Litchfield added 84 runs in a record 202-run stand. Spinner Alana King was named player of the match after taking 2-18 from her 10 overs, as Bangladesh posted their highest total against Australia with 9-198. Healy’s side chased down the target in just 24.5 overs to stay unbeaten and move top of the group with four wins and a washout.

🏏 Marnus Labuschagne has strengthened his case for an Ashes recall with yet another century (100 runs) for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield, Australia’s top domestic cricket competition. The right-hander scored 159 against South Australia in Adelaide, marking his fourth hundred in five innings to start the summer. After being dropped from the Test side in June, Labuschagne looks back in top form and now appears almost certain to be recalled for the Ashes opener in Perth on 21 November.

🏉 Rugby Australia has offered Max Jorgensen a five-year deal in a bid to keep the rising Wallabies star out of reach from the NRL’s Sydney Roosters and breakaway rugby competition R360, according to the SMH. It’s only the third five-year contract RA has ever offered, highlighting how highly the 21-year-old is valued. The deal would keep Jorgensen in rugby through two World Cups, with RA eager to secure him amid renewed interest from Roosters boss Nick Politis and coach Trent Robinson, who have tried to sign him twice before.

TDA’s top three…

Sport to keep an eye on this weekend…

Constellation Cup: Australia v New Zealand

Talking points: The Constellation Cup, an annual international netball trophy contested between Australia and New Zealand, begins Friday night in Melbourne with the two sides facing off in the first of a four-match series. Kiwi captain Karin Burger says her team can stay focused despite the shock removal of coach Noeline Taurua, who guided them to a World Cup title in 2019. Australia enters the series full of confidence after a 3-0 sweep over South Africa. New Zealand holds the trophy after last year’s 3-1 series win, but the Diamonds haven’t lost to New Zealand in Melbourne for a decade.

How to watch: Tonight’s match begins at 7:30pm. You can watch the Constellation Cup on Kayo (free), Foxtel, or Binge.

A-League: Melbourne City v Western Sydney Wanderers

Talking points: The 21st season of the men’s A-League kicks off this weekend and Saturday afternoon will see two competition heavyweights go head to head. The Western Sydney Wanderers will host reigning champions Melbourne City. This season of the A-League is particularly important for the players looking to earn a spot in Tony Popovic’s Socceroos squad for the 2026 men’s FIFA World Cup.

How to watch: The match kicks off at 5:00pm. You can watch it on Channel 10 or Paramount+.

Formula One: United States Grand Prix

Talking points: Formula One returns this weekend and there is no bigger storyline than the race for the world championship between Australia’s Oscar Piastri and Great Britain’s Lando Norris. At the Singapore GP two weeks ago, tensions flared as Norris rammed into Piastri and overtook him. Piastri responded on the team radio: "That's not fair, I'm sorry. That's not fair." As it stands, Piastri has a 22-point lead over Norris and will look to extend it this weekend. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen isn’t totally out of the question either, he has won two of the last three races and sits 63 points behind Piastri with six races remaining in the season. In Formula One, points are awarded to the top ten finishers in each race, with first place receiving 25 points, followed by 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 1 point respectively.

How to watch: The race starts at 6:00am on Monday. You can watch Formula One on Kayo or Foxtel.
