Good evening!

The weekend saw an overload of Australian representation with the Wallabies, Diamonds, Jillaroos, Kangaroos, Matildas, Dolphins, and men’s and women’s cricket teams all in action.

Can you name the sport for all of them? And why don’t our cricket teams have nicknames?

Stat of the day

23
The consecutive number of wins recorded by AFLW’s North Melbourne Kangaroos after they beat St Kilda 67-21 on Sunday. The Kangaroos have not lost a match since Round 3 last season, and their 23rd victory equals the all-time AFL/VFL/AFLW record set by the Geelong men's side of 1952/53. The weekend’s result also saw them clinch the minor premiership with one round remaining in the regular season. They will take on second-placed Hawthorn on Friday night as they attempt to win a historic 24th straight match.

Quote of the day

“Mate. Oh my god, are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I could have f**king killed them.”
Kiwi Formula One driver Liam Lawson during the Mexican Grand Prix this morning. Lawson’s words came after he came close to hitting two track marshals who were cleaning debris from the track during the race. The FIA, the sport’s governing body, released a statement afterwards saying it was investigating the incident.

Random fact of the day

On this day in 1931, Japanese athlete Chūhei Nambu set a long jump world record of 7.98 metres. He set the world record in the triple jump at the Olympics the following year, making him the first man to hold both of those records at the same time.

In case you missed it…

🏉 The Wallabies opened their spring tour with a scrappy 19–15 win over Japan in torrential Tokyo rain. Despite early injuries to Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and Josh Canham, new captain Nick Champion de Crespigny led from the front, while Hunter Paisami and Carlo Tizzano impressed in a rotated side. Eddie Jones’ Brave Blossoms pushed late, but a clutch turnover in the final minutes sealed Australia’s narrow win. The Wallabies will take on England in London next weekend.

The Matildas edged out Wales 2-1 in their first-ever meeting on Sunday morning (AEDT), with Courtney Nevin scoring her first international goal and Caitlin Foord netting the late winner. Sam Kerr made her first start for Australia in nearly two years, while Hayley Raso captained the side in her 100th appearance. The win kicks off the Matildas’ European tour ahead of their clash with England on Wednesday morning.

🏏 India’s men’s cricket side ended its ODI series against Australia on a high, winning the third and final match by nine wickets in Sydney on Saturday. Chasing 236 runs, the veteran pair of Rohit Sharma (121 runs) and Virat Kohli (74) combined for an unbeaten 168-run stand to help India win the match and avoid a series sweep. The two countries will now turn their attention to a five-match T20 series which begins in Canberra on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Cricket Australia has confirmed that Pat Cummins will miss the first Ashes test against England as he recovers from a back injury. Steve Smith, who has captained the side before, will step into the role in Cummins' absence while Scott Boland looms as his likely replacement in the bowling attack.

🏊 Australia’s dominance in the pool continued at the Short Course Swimming World Cup in Toronto over the weekend, with Lani Pallister and Kaylee McKeown both setting short-course world records. Pallister smashed Katie Ledecky’s 800m freestyle record by more than three seconds, while McKeown bettered her own 200m backstroke mark for the second straight week. The Swimming World Cup is an annual three-leg series where the world’s best swimmers compete across short-course events for points, prize money, and the overall World Cup title. The meeting in Toronto was the third and final of the series.

🏏 Spin bowler Alana King took a staggering seven wickets for Australia as they beat South Africa in their final group stage match of the women’s cricket World Cup. The seven-wicket win helped Australia move into the semi-final stages at the top of the round-robin table. They will face India (4th) in the second semi-final on Thursday. The other semi-final will see England (2nd) play South Africa (3rd). The lead-up to Australia’s match against South Africa was marred by an incident where two members of the Australian team were “touched inappropriately” by a man on a motorbike in Indore. Cricket Australia told media local police are “handling the matter.”

Walsh stars against England as Australia takes 1-0 lead in rugby league Ashes

International rugby league is in full swing with several matches being played over the weekend. Here’s what you might have missed.

Walsh stars against England

The Kangaroos made a winning start to the 2025 Ashes rugby league series, defeating England 26-6 in London on Saturday (local time). Reece Walsh starred on his Test debut, running for 236 metres, scoring two tries, and earning man of the match honours.

Fellow debutant Mark Nawaqanitawase impressed with over 200 run metres, while Angus Crichton dominated up front and managed to score two tries. Captain Isaah Yeo is expected to miss the second Test after a head knock in the opening ten minutes of the match.

Both teams now head to Liverpool with Australia leading the three-Test series 1-0.

Double-header in Brisbane

A Pacific Championships double-header at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday saw a women’s clash between Australia and Samoa and a men’s match between Samoa and Tonga.

The Jillaroos, Australia’s women’s team, dominated Samoa 60-0, running in 11 tries. They will take on the Kiwi Ferns in Auckland on Sunday.

Afterwards, Samoa booked their spot in the Pacific Cup final with a dominant 34-0 win over Tonga in a lightning-delayed clash. Payne Haas marked his first Test for Samoa with an emotional try as the side powered past their rivals after a 90-minute interruption.

Lando Norris celebrates victory in Mexico (Getty)

Piastri loses lead in Drivers’ Championship as Noriss wins Mexican GP

Australian F1 driver Oscar Piastri has lost his lead in the F1 Drivers’ Championship after finishing fifth at the Mexican Grand Prix. Piastri’s McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, won the race after starting in pole position.

With four races to go, Norris now leads the Drivers’ Championship, one point ahead of Piastri. Here’s what to know.

What happened

Piastri started seventh on the grid after struggling in Qualifying on Saturday (local time). He dropped to 10th in the early stages of the race but managed to fight his way back to finish fifth.

Norris claimed his first podium in Mexico to mark his 10th career win and sixth victory this season. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second, followed by Red Bull’s defending world champion Max Verstappen.

Standings

Points are awarded to the top ten drivers in each race, with the most (25) awarded to the winner. Second-place receives 18 points, third-place receives 15, and so on. The 10th-place finisher receives one point.

With his win in Mexico City, Norris now has 357 points. Piastri is trailing behind him by one point, on 356. It means Norris now leads the Drivers’ Championship for the first time since the Saudi Arabian GP in April.

Verstappen is in third place on 306 points while Mercedes’ George Russell (258) and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (210) round out the top five. McLaren has already won the Constructors’ Championship (F1's team trophy) for the second year in a row.

Verstappen’s consecutive podiums at the last six races have seen him emerge as a late challenger for the championship. If he defeats the McLaren drivers, it will be Verstappen’s fifth consecutive championship.

What’s next?

The next race will be the Brazilian GP in São Paulo on Monday 10 November (AEDT). That will be followed by races in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi to finish the season.

Additional points will be available in Brazil and Qatar, where the final sprint races of the year are scheduled. There are 116 points available over the final four races.
