Good evening!
Yesterday we asked you what your favourite sport sound was. Here are a few of the excellent answers that came through…
Will said: “An animated appeal, slips cordon in glorious harmony, deep into the batting line up, when the umpire's decision can sway the result of the test match.”
Hayley said: “Approaching the netball courts on Saturday morning and hearing a chorus of umpire whistles!”
Tim said: “The sound of nearly 2 tonne of prime beef coming together when the ref calls “set” during an All Blacks v Springboks Test.”
Manu said: “Swiiiissshhh when the ball goes through the net without touching the rim at all. Especially when the gym is empty and players are working out.”
How good are the sounds of sport!

"I don't think it's any great secret, we do have some heat challenges in Tokyo… some of you have heard me talk about the challenges of climate change. These are not transient. They're here to stay."
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe speaking ahead of the athletics world championships this weekend in Tokyo. This summer, 15 Japanese cities have experienced their highest temperatures since records began in 1898. On Sunday, when the women’s marathon is scheduled, temperatures are expected to hit a high of 34°C with high humidity. During the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the long-distance walking events and marathons were held in Sapporo in northern Japan because of its cooler climate.

George Weah is the only African player ever to win the Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual award. The Liberian striker claimed the award in 1995 for his performances across two clubs: France’s Paris Saint-Germain and Italy’s AC Milan. After retiring, he swapped the pitch for politics, and in 2017, he was elected President of Liberia. The first Black player to win the Ballon D’or was Eusébio, who was born in what is now Mozambique when it was a Portuguese territory, and who represented Portugal internationally.

🚴♂️ Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal won Stage 16 of the Vuelta a España after the stage was shortened by 8km due to a pro-Palestinian protest blocking the final ascent. One of the teams in the Vuelta is Israel-Premier Tech, a joint venture between Israel and a Canadian company. The finish was moved to a lower point, where Bernal sprinted past Mikel Landa for his first Vuelta stage win. Jonas Vingegaard retained the overall red jersey while Australian Jai Hindley is still in fourth place. This marks the second time the finish line has been changed mid-stage at this year’s Vuelta as a result of protests.

⚽ Australia retained the Soccer Ashes with a commanding 3-1 win over New Zealand in Auckland, completing a 2-0 series sweep. Rookie striker Mohamed Toure stole the show with two goals, while fellow young gun Nestory Irankunda added a late goal to cap off the night. With the FIFA World Cup looming in 2026, the Socceroos now turn their attention to two friendlies in North America next month against Canada and the U.S. as part of their preparations.

Josh Giddey has signed a lucrative extension with the Bulls (Getty)
Aussie basketball star Josh Giddey signs four-year deal to stay with the Chicago Bulls
Josh Giddey has signed a four-year, $US100 million ($AU152 million) extension to stay with the Chicago Bulls.
The move ends weeks of negotiation and locks in the 22-year-old as a cornerstone of the team’s rebuild.
Here’s what to know.
Context
Giddey delivered a breakout NBA season in 2024/25, averaging career highs of 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists. He also notched seven triple-doubles, the second most in a season by a Bulls player ever. The holder of that record is none other than Michael Jordan.
A triple double is when a player records double digits in three different statistical categories (e.g. points, assists, rebounds) during a game.
Giddey had sought a deal of $US30 million per year, while the Bulls had wanted to limit him to $20 million a year for four years.
What’s next
With the new deal, Giddey has secured long-term stability and Chicago has signalled that it intends to build its team around his playmaking vision.
The Bulls finished 10th in the Eastern Conference last season and will be looking to improve on that when the 2025/26 season begins in October.

Ange is returning to the Premier League (Getty)
Postecoglou set to return to Premier League with Nottingham Forest
Ange Postecoglou has been appointed manager of Nottingham Forest on a two-year deal.
Here’s what to know about the Australian coach’s return to the English Premier League.
What happened
Nottingham Forest’s previous manager, Portuguese coach Nuno Espírito Santo, was sacked following a breakdown in his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Postecoglou was a frontrunner for the role given his personal relationship with Marinakis.
Of Postecoglou’s appointment, Marinakis said: “We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies. His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.”
Postecoglou steps into the role just days before Forest’s Premier League campaign resumes with a match against Arsenal. The club is currently 10th on the Premier League ladder after three matches with one win, one draw, and one loss.
Nottingham Forest qualified for the Europa League for the first time in 30 years last season, and Marinakis has made clear he wants to build on that momentum with a more expansive brand of football.
Postecoglou’s record
The 60-year-old joins after a turbulent two-season spell at Tottenham, where he delivered the club’s first European trophy in decades by winning the Europa League, but left following a disappointing 17th-place finish in the Premier League.
Postecoglou’s coaching career has spanned several countries, including title-winning stints at Celtic in Scotland and Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, as well as the historic 2015 Asian Cup triumph with the Socceroos.
At Forest, his attacking, high-tempo philosophy is expected to bring a sharp contrast to Nuno’s more conservative approach. Supporters are hopeful his appointment can spark not only progress in European competition but also a solid push domestically after the club finished seventh in the EPL last season.
