American skiing great Lindsey Vonn reflecting on her Winter Olympics campaign, after revealing she nearly had her leg amputated following a downhill crash that caused compartment syndrome and a complex tibia fracture. Compartment syndrome is a serious condition where pressure builds inside a muscle and restricts blood flow. The 41-year-old credited a Team USA surgeon with saving her leg.

Michael Schumacher remains the only Formula 1 driver to finish every race of a season on the podium. In 2002, the German stood on the podium in all 17 races, winning 11, finishing second five times, and third once as he claimed the world championship with six races to spare.

NRL judiciary overturns three-game ban on Panthers star Nathan Cleary

The NRL judiciary has overturned a three-game ban on Panthers star Nathan Cleary.

Cleary was represented by his father and coach, Ivan Cleary, at a hearing on Monday night.

Here’s what to know.

Background

Cleary faced the ban after a high tackle in the 38th minute of Penrith’s pre-season loss to the West Tigers last Friday night. He made high contact on winger Heamasi Makasini and was sent to the sin bin.

The match review committee charged him with dangerous contact and initially classified the tackle as Grade 2. ‘Careless’ high tackles are graded 1-3, with 3 carrying the heaviest penalties. This means the committee viewed the contact as a mid range offence that normally results in a suspension rather than a fine.

What happened

Ivan Cleary acted as his son’s advocate during the hearing, marking the first time a father has represented a son at the judiciary since the late Bob Fulton for Scott (playing for Manly) in the 1990s.

Nathan Cleary said: “I had no say in the matter… The last few times [my father] has been to the judiciary it hasn’t worked out too well… We thought we had a pretty good case, so I am glad the panel could see that”.

The hearing ran for approximately 50 minutes, and the panel took 12 minutes to reach its decision. It accepted their argument for a lower grading and downgraded Cleary’s high tackle charge to a Grade 1 offence based on factors including his feet being planted and the contact mainly being shoulder to shoulder, resulting in a fine of $1,800.

The outcome clears Cleary to play in Penrith’s season opener against Brisbane on 6 March.

Police respond after a bus was set on fire in response to the killing of El Mencho (Getty)

Could the cartel violence in Mexico impact this year’s FIFA World Cup?

Mexico’s preparations for co-hosting the FIFA World Cup this year have been thrown into sharp focus after a surge in cartel-related violence following the army killing cartel leader Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera Cervantes.

Here’s what we know.

Context

In response to the death of their leader, the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) cartel has blocked roads, burned vehicles, and exchanged gunfire with the Mexican army.

The violence has spread from the state of Jalisco to more than a dozen regions in Mexico, and reports suggest that at least 25 National Guard officers have been killed within 24 hours.

Javier Eskauriatza, an assistant professor of criminal law at the University of Nottingham, told BBC Sport: “When you push down on the cartels you do get pushback – the danger is that it can be very difficult to manage a security situation that spirals out of control.”

How is this related to sport?

The consequences of the violence are already having an impact on Mexican sport.

Mexico’s top professional football league has postponed four matches, while local governments in affected areas have temporarily suspended public events.

Attention has also shifted to professional tennis, with the ATP’s Acapulco Open underway. Alex de Minaur, who won the tournament in 2023 and 2024, is among a group of Australians competing. The ATP tournament has continued, with players advised to remain within hotel and tournament grounds, transport routes altered, and security increased.

A WTA event in Mérida is also operating with additional police presence.

Concerns for FIFA World Cup

The 2026 men’s FIFA World Cup is set to kick off in Mexico in June, and Guadalajara, the capital city of Jalisco, is due to host four matches. Authorities now face the dual challenge of not just containing the violence, but restoring confidence that Mexico will be able to run one of the world’s biggest sporting events safely.

Mexico, co-hosting the event with the U.S. and Canada, will also stage matches in Mexico City and Monterrey.
