Good evening!

If you’ve seen the movie ‘Moneyball’ you’ll know who the Oakland A’s are.

Here’s a quick refresher if you haven’t. The Athletics (or A’s) are a major league baseball team who have been based in the city of Oakland, California since 1968.

But now, the franchise is leaving its Oakland home of more than five decades and relocating to California’s capital, Sacramento (followed by Vegas in 2028... It's complicated.)

The A’s played their last game at the Oakland Coliseum last week and for many local fans, it feels like the city has lost a part of its soul. But like the Brad Pitt movie Moneyball, all good things must come to an end, as the A’s mark an end to their storied Oakland chapter.

If you have a little bit of time this long weekend, definitely watch Moneyball. That’s what I’ll be doing. (It's on Netflix, I checked.)

Dockers surge into top four following win over Cats

The Fremantle Dockers beat an at-home Geelong Cats 45-27 in week six of the AFLW last night. The Dockers, who’ve moved to third on the ladder, have established themselves as strong AFLW finals contenders midway through the season. Geelong are in 15th.

What happened

The opening half of the match was a tight battle. Geelong headed into half-time with a narrow 1-point lead after several missed scoring opportunities. Fremantle asserted themselves by kicking the first two goals of the third quarter. The Dockers’ best players on the night included former captain Hayley Miller, who had 25 disposals, and Gabby O'Sullivan, who scored a game-high two goals.

What’s next?

Both teams are back in action this Sunday. Fremantle will play 5th-placed Hawthorn and Geelong will fly to Sydney to take on the 11th-placed Swans.

NRL and NRLW Dally M ceremony preview

The 2024 Dally M recipients will be named at the NRL’s night of nights in just a few hours. Here’s what you need to know ahead of tonight’s ceremony.

What are the Dally M awards?

The Dally Ms is named after Herbert “Dally” Messenger, a rugby league player who starred for Eastern Suburbs, New South Wales, and Australia between 1907 and 1913. Messenger was nicknamed “The Master” and considered a rugby league genius by his contemporaries.

The awards are handed out after every regular NRL and NRLW season, based on points awarded by two independent judges at the end of every round of competition. Each of the judges awards three points to the person they think was the best player on the field that week two to the second-best, and one to the third-best. The player with the most points at the end of the season wins the Dally M Player of the Year, the night’s most prestigious award.

In 2023, Newcastle Knights players Kalyn Ponga and Tamika Upton won the men’s and women’s awards respectively.

What are the other awards?

A full team of 13 players, made up of the most outstanding player in each position on the field, is recognised. There is also an award for Coach of the Year, Captain of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Top Pointscorer and Top Tryscorer.

The Provan-Smith Medal is awarded to the player who “displayed the true ‘spirit of the game’ through their actions and conduct on-field” throughout the season.

Favourites to win

Melbourne Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes is the favourite to win the men’s Dally M, following a standout season that saw his side secure the minor premiership. Among the favourites to win the women’s award are Sydney Roosters lock Olivia Kernick, Parramatta Eels fullback Abbi Church, Canberra Raiders lock Simaima Taufa, and last year’s winner, Upton.
