Stat of the day

The number of years since English Premier League club Newcastle United last won a trophy in any competition. That drought was broken on Sunday when the club defeated League leaders Liverpool 2-1 in the final of the Carabao Cup, an annual knockout competition. The last trophy Newcastle won was the discontinued Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.

Quote of the day
"I'd like to thank myself — for fighting until the end, for always believing and for never quitting. I tried to run like a rabbit because Aryna was sending bullets [across the net] and it was hard."
17-year-old Russian tennis star Mirra Andreeva after beating world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final of Indian Wells. After losing the first set, the teenager composed herself and went on to win the next two sets, sealing a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. After becoming the youngest-ever winner at a WTA 1000 event in Dubai last week, Andreeva has now won two consecutive titles and 12 straight matches. Andreeva’s ranking will progress to a career-high number six.

🎾 In the men’s singles final at Indian Wells, British tennis player Jack Draper beat Denmark’s Holger Rune in straight sets to claim his first ATP Masters title. The title, which is one tier below a grand slam, marks the biggest win of the 23-year-old’s career. Draper had a stunning run to the final, not losing a single set all tournament and upsetting two-time defending Indian Wells champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi. Draper will move up to a career-high seventh in the ATP rankings.

🏉 France has claimed rugby union’s Six Nations title for the first time since 2022. Les Bleus beat Scotland 35-16 on the final weekend of the tournament to clinch the title. Also on Sunday, England handed Wales its 17th successive loss with a 68-14 battering in Cardiff and Ireland narrowly beat Italy 22-17. During France’s 2025 Six Nations campaign they played brilliant rugby, scoring a competition record of 29 tries. French winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey set an individual record of eight tries himself.

⛳ Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy and the world number 57 J.J. Spaun will face off in a three-hole playoff to decide the winner of the Player’s Championship at TPC Sawgrass tonight (AEDT). After the final round on Sunday, the two golfers were tied at 12 shots under par. A victory for Spaun would be the biggest of his 13-year career, during which he has only won one PGA Tour title.

Gout Gout storms down the home stretch (Getty)
Gout Gout becomes first Aussie to run sub-20
Gout Gout became the first Australian to run under 20 seconds for the 200m at the Queensland Athletics Championships on Sunday. While the 17-year-old's time of 19.98 will not count as an official national record due to an illegal tailwind, his time of 20.05 in the semi-final is the fastest legal time globally this year. He remains the holder of the national record of 20.04.
Gout Gout
After winning a silver medal in the men’s 200m at the under-20 world championships at the age of 16 last year, Gout has gone from strength to strength. In October he signed a contract with Adidas, before breaking Peter Norman’s long-standing Australian 200m record in December. Earlier this year, the teenager spent time training in the U.S. with men’s 100m Olympic champion Noah Lyles.
The next event he’ll be lining up for is the Maurie Plant Meet, a World Athletics event, in Melbourne on 29 March.
What they said:
Asked to describe how he felt during the race, Gout said: “I felt literally free. I had 80 metres left to go, and I thought, let’s send it, and only from then did I believe I had a chance of going sub. Seeing the clock, I was really happy and surprised in a way, but it just felt like a weight off my shoulders. Now that I’ve done it, I’ve just got to do that more consistently.”

Lando Norris on top of the podium in Melbourne (Getty)
Formula One season underway with Norris claiming victory at Australian GP
The Australian Grand Prix kicked off the 2025 Formula One season over the weekend with plenty of on-track drama. McLaren’s Lando Norris won the first race of the season, closely followed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell.
For Aussies Oscar Piastri and Jack Doohan, it wasn’t quite the opening to the season they would have been happy with.
What happened
Lando Norris has landed the first punch of the 2025 Formula One season, beating out defending world champion Max Verstappen by less than a second in tricky conditions at Melbourne’s Albert Park.
Hometown hero Oscar Piastri started second on the grid and looked sharp through the opening stages of the race, despite being overtaken by Verstappen before Turn 2. However, Piastri’s aspirations for a podium finish unravelled on Lap 44 when he lost control in wet conditions and became stranded on the grass for nearly a whole lap. The 23-year-old ended up finishing in ninth position.
The other Aussie in the race, Jack Doohan, had a tough day in his second race for Alpine. The 22-year-old hit the wall on the opening lap of the race and was forced to retire. Doohan will be under pressure to perform in the next couple of races, with Argentina’s Franco Colapinto sitting in the reserves for Alpine. Colapinto scored two top-ten finishes last year. Doohan was not the only driver to retire from the race early with five others (Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto, Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, and Isack Hadjar) recording DNFs.
Lewis Hamilton's debut race for Ferrari did not go quite as well as he might have hoped. The seven-time world champion finished 10th, while his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc ended up in eighth place.
George Russell’s rookie teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished fourth on his Formula One debut. It marks the best finish for a driver on debut since Kevin Magnussen finished second at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix.
What they said:
Norris said: “We got it wrong a lot last year so I guess we learned from our mistakes. Dealing with the pressure, dealing with Max, dealing with Oscar behind me, I was pushing pretty hard.”
Piastri said: “Clearly it will hurt for a period of time, but I’m still happy with the job that I did, apart from that one lap”.
What’s next?
The next race on the F1 calendar is the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai on 23 March. Last year’s Chinese GP was won by Verstappen.
