On this day in 1984, a 17-year-old from Queensland pulled off one of sport's greatest upsets.

Swimmer Jon Sieben, 173cm tall and known as 'Shrimp', was competing in the 200m butterfly at the Los Angeles Olympics.

The favourite for gold was West German world record holder Michael Gross, standing at over 200cm tall and nicknamed 'The Albatross' for his 225cm wingspan. 

Sieben, ranked 25th in the world, drew an outside lane for the final. Then he swam the race of his life, more than four seconds quicker than his personal best, to catch Gross over the final 50 metres and break the world record by a single hundredth of a second.

The Shrimp had defeated the Albatross.

The age of para bowls athlete Louise Hoskins, who became the oldest gold medallist in Commonwealth Games history on the final day of competition in Glasgow. Hoskins and teammate Serena Bonnell won the para women’s pairs event, beating reigning world champions New Zealand in the final. She said afterwards: “I never thought I’d win at my age. Never give up.”

Carlton interim coach Josh Fraser said after Saturday’s game when asked whether or not he would put his hand up for the full-time head coach role with the club. The former ruckman boosted his case with a 76-point win over reigning premiers Brisbane at Marvel Stadium. Fraser took over midway through the season after Michael Voss left, with the Blues at one win and nine losses. The victory over Brisbane, which had won its previous seven games, improved Fraser’s record in charge to nine wins and two losses.

Ross Sutton was Australia’s first-ever Paralympic medallist at the 1960 Paralympics in Rome. Sutton won gold in the Gentleman’s St. Nicholas Round, a short-distance archery event. Sutton had lost the use of his legs after crashing a small plane while attempting to deliver a love letter to his then-fiancée.

🏉 The Cronulla Sharks recorded their fifth consecutive win on Sunday, beating the South Sydney Rabbitohs 32-16 at Shark Park. Halfback Nicho Hynes kicked six from six to reach 32 straight goals, a club record. He is now equal-second on the NRL's all-time list and three conversions short of Hazem El Masri's mark of 35. In the day's other game, the Parramatta Eels edged the Wests Tigers 16-13.

⛳ Japanese golfer Shiho Kuwaki won the Women's Open at Royal Lytham in England on Sunday, beating Germany's Esther Henseleit in a playoff for her first major title. Henseleit forced the playoff with a 45-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, only to lose on the second sudden-death hole. Australia's highest finisher was Hannah Green, who finished the tournament tied for 29th. It was the last women's major of the year.

🚴‍♀️ The Netherlands' Lorena Wiebes won stage two of the Tour de France Femmes in Geneva on Sunday, backing up her opening-day victory and extending a race record with her seventh career stage win. Fellow Dutch cyclist Riejanne Markus, a time-trial specialist, looked set to win the stage from a long solo break but was reeled in 500 metres from home. Wiebes remains in the yellow jersey as the race’s overall leader with Stage 3 set to begin in Geneva on Monday (local time). 

🏉 Berina Colakovic, wife of former South Sydney forward Jai Arrow, is suing her ex-employer for alleged workplace discrimination, according to the Daily Telegraph. Colakovic's suspension came just as she came back from maternity leave, weeks before Arrow's motor neurone disease diagnosis became public. Federal Court documents include allegations a manager threatened her over performance in 2024. Colakovic’s employer says the suspension was justified following staff complaints. She remains on pay for now, though Colakovic fears the couple could both end up out of work with a young daughter to provide for. "It's not just about the money, but the principle," Colakovic told The Daily Telegraph.

🏉 Australia won the first AFLW international match on Saturday, beating Ireland 91-41 at a sold-out North Sydney Oval. Australia captain Jasmine Garner took best on ground and the inaugural medal, while teammate Tahlia Randall kicked a game-high four goals. Blaithin Bogue was Ireland’s best with three goals.

Laurie Daley has stepped down as NSW Blues coach, opening the door for long-time assistant Matt King to take over the State of Origin job.

The 56-year-old leaves after guiding NSW to a 2-1 State of Origin series win, sealed by a 30-12 victory in last month's series decider in Brisbane. 

It brings to an end a second stint in charge for Daley, who first coached the Blues from 2013, leading NSW to its first Origin series win after Queensland's eight-year win streak in 2014. He then returned in 2025 after  Michael Maguire left for the Broncos. He finishes with two series wins from seven series at the helm.

Daley confirmed his departure from the role on Sky Sports Radio’s The Big Sports Breakfast on Monday morning. He said: “I committed to giving it everything I had for two years, and I did that wholeheartedly. I just feel like now is the right time for someone else to have the opportunity to lead this great state and team.”

King played nine Origin games for NSW between 2005 and 2007 and has coached under both Maguire and Daley at Blues level, alongside a long-running assistant role at the Sydney Roosters. Nine reports a two-year deal is being finalised, with Daley publicly backing the appointment.

Australia have closed out Glasgow 2026 with 70 gold and 171 medals overall, comfortably the biggest haul of any nation. 

Here's how it happened. 

The Australian team not only topped the overall medal tally, but also led the medal tally in swimming, 3x3 basketball, track cycling, and athletics. 

Australia's swimmers, the Dolphins, took home a record 37 gold medals and 76 medals in total. Sprint freestyler Meg Harris was the most successful athlete of the Games with six golds. It was a hugely successful Games for Australia’s 3x3 basketballers, with all four Australian sides (men's, women's and both wheelchair teams) reaching the podium.

At the velodrome, the track cyclists recorded their biggest Commonwealth haul ever, with 28 medals. Leigh Hoffman became the first Australian cyclist to win four at a single Games, with three gold and one silver. Georgia Baker won two gold medals in Glasgow, bringing her career total to a record-equalling five gold, and later carried the flag at the closing ceremony.

The netball tournament saw New Zealand claim a surprise gold after world number one Australia lost 46-45 to Jamaica in the semi-final. It was the first time the Diamonds had failed to reach a Commonwealth gold medal match since netball joined the program in 1998. They recovered to beat England 68-50 for bronze, their lowest finish at a Games.

Australia's track and field athletes saved their best for the final weekend, producing the most successful single day in Commonwealth Games history: seven gold medals and 17 medals on Saturday, beating the previous best of six gold from 1950. That capped off 12 gold and 34 medals across the athletics program.

The headline act was the men's 4x100m relay, where Lachlan Kennedy, Joshua Azzopardi, Calab Law, and Rohan Browning held off Olympic champions Canada to win in 38.07 seconds. It was Australia's first gold in the event since 1974. Meanwhile, Jemima Montag defended her 10,000m race walk title, and Abbey Caldwell won the women's mile ahead of Jess Hull and Claudia Hollingsworth. Among the Para athletes, Rhiannon Clarke claimed the first international gold of her career in the T38 200m, at her third Games after taking silver as a 15-year-old in 2018.

There was more gold in the field. Matt Denny defended his discus title, Mackenzie Little won the women's javelin, and pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall took a third straight Commonwealth title with a Games-record 5.85m. 

Despite the avalanche of medals, this was not Australia's best Games. The gold record remains 87, set at the Victoria 1994 Games, while the total-medal record 179 was set at  Birmingham 2022. Glasgow's haul came from a reduced program of just 10 sports, against 19 in Birmingham.

Ahmedabad in India will host the next Commonwealth Games in 2030. It will be the centenary edition, marking 100 years since the inaugural British Empire Games in 1930.
