Former Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley was unveiled today as the first coach of the Tasmania Devils, the AFL's incoming 19th club.

"It's such an exciting day for me and hopefully for everyone involved and the Tasmanian people. Because I'm now a Tasmanian," he said.

The 59-year-old has signed a five-year deal to help build the team from scratch. He got the nod ahead of former Sydney coach John Longmire and former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley.

The 39-year-old sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the last hole at Royal Birkdale to edge American Cameron Young by a shot, sealing his first major and becoming the first New Zealander to win the tournament since Bob Charles in 1963.

New Zealand golfer and 2026 Open champion Ryan Fox is the son of former rugby union international Grant Fox. Grant was part of the 1987 All Blacks team that won the inaugural Rugby World Cup.

🏁 Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli extended his Formula One championship lead with a win at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, holding off Ferrari's Charles Leclerc at Spa-Francorchamps. It is the sixth win of the season for the 19-year-old Italian, who started the race in pole position. His teammate George Russell lasted just one lap, spinning into the gravel after contact with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished third, Hamilton was fourth, and Aussie Oscar Piastri finished fifth. The next race will be the Hungarian GP on Sunday, 26 July. 

🚴 Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard has crashed out of this year’s race, ending his hopes of a third title. The Danish rider, who had been sitting second overall, fell about 20km from the end of Stage 15 on Sunday and broke his collarbone. It is the first time he has failed to finish a Grand Tour race. The crash came hours after anti-doping officials woke Vingegaard for a test at 2am, which race leader Tadej Pogačar suggested may have left him less sharp. Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel went on to win the stage, outsprinting Pogačar, who still holds the overall lead by five minutes.

🥊 American boxer Hannah Rapp has died at 26 after being hit by a car while cycling in Texas on Saturday. Police allege the driver passed Rapp, stopped and reversed into her. He has been charged with manslaughter. Rapp turned professional in 2024 and fought for a world featherweight title only last month, losing on points. The World Boxing Council said the boxing community was heartbroken.

🏉 Manly Sea Eagles fullback Tom Trbojevic went down with a fresh hamstring injury on Sunday, minutes after scoring the opening try, as his side fell 38-32 to the Gold Coast Titans. It is the latest blow for the frequently injured star, who missed eight weeks earlier this year with his other hamstring. Ninth-placed Manly have lost four of their past five and sit one win outside the top eight while the Titans are 16th. Elsewhere on Sunday, the Dolphins beat the North Queensland Cowboys 36-16.

🏉 Essendon claimed its first win in Victoria since May last year, upsetting the Greater Western Sydney Giants 67-64 at Marvel Stadium on Sunday for just their second win of the season. The three-point result was also the Bombers' first win under interim coach Dean Solomon. Elsewhere on Sunday, the Hawthorn Hawks defeated the Richmond Tigers 122-52 at the MCG, and the Western Bulldogs held off the Gold Coast Suns 77-68.

Spain’s men’s football team are world champions for the second time after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday (local time). 

Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match in the 106th minute, sealing victory after Spain dominated much of the match but were repeatedly denied by Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

What happened

Spain controlled possession and created the better chances throughout the final, with 20 shots at goal compared to Argentina’s three. Argentina were strong in defence, but reduced to 10 men late in regular time after Enzo Fernández was sent off. 

Spain finally got their breakthrough when Torres finished from close range in the second half of extra time. Spain finished the tournament having conceded just one goal, the fewest ever by a men's World Cup champion.

Significance

It is Spain's second men's World Cup title, first winning in 2010. The result also means Spain is the first country to hold both the men's and women's World Cup titles at the same time, having won the women's tournament in 2023. 

For Argentina, defeat ended their hopes of becoming the first men’s team to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1962. Captain Lionel Messi's sixth World Cup may also his last. 

Third-place playoff

On Saturday (local time), England secured third place with a thrilling 6-4 win over France in the playoff, powered by a Bukayo Saka hat-trick. France mounted a second-half comeback from 4-0 down, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice, but Jude Bellingham sealed the result in stoppage time. 

Mbappé's 10 goals across the tournament were enough to claim the Golden Boot. He is the first player to win the award twice.

Two months after making history on Mount Everest, 18-year-old Melbourne student Bianca Adler has revealed her next major challenge.

The teen will walk 50 kilometres through South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula in a single day, raising money for mental health support.

Here's what you need to know.

Background

Adler reached the summit of Mount Everest on 20 May 2026, becoming the youngest Australian to climb the world's highest mountain.

It was her second attempt. 

In 2025, she turned back around 400 metres from the top due to bad weather. Before Everest, she had already set world records as the youngest woman to climb two other Himalayan peaks, Manaslu and Ama Dablam.

The mental side

Reaching the summit is only half the challenge. 

Adler has said almost all accidents happen on the descent, when climbers are tired and lose focus. She reached the summit at 2am, allowing her to stay ahead of the crowds.

"I knew I had to stay concentrated," she said.

Next challenge

Adler has now been named a Coastrek ambassador for 2026. 

Coastrek organises team hiking challenges along Australia’s coastline, raising money for charities while encouraging more people to get active outdoors.

On 4 September, she will walk 50 kilometres from Parsons Beach to Goolwa across the Fleurieu Peninsula in a single day. It will be her first Coastrek.

Adler said: "I love how they are inspiring more women to get outdoors and pursue goals."

Fundraising

The event will raise money for Beyond Blue, a national mental health organisation that runs a free counselling and support line around the clock.

The service helps more than 800 Australians every day, with someone reaching out about every two minutes.

Adler said she also wanted to encourage more women to enter adventure sports, which she described as heavily male-dominated.

Adler will take on the Fleurieu Peninsula Coastrek on 4 September. Registrations close on 26 July.

The waitlist for the Sydney Coastrek, scheduled for March 2027, will open on 27 July.
