Good evening!

On this day in 2007, Finnish driver Kimi Räikkönen won the Formula 1 World Championship in stunning fashion.

Starting the final race of the season in Brazil third in the standings, the Ferrari star claimed victory and edged out McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton by a single point.

It was only the second time in F1 history, after Giuseppe Farina in 1950, that a driver sitting third before the final race went on to win the title.

With Max Verstappen closing the gap on McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, could history repeat itself this season?

Quote of the day

"We've lost three games like this, it's heartbreaking."
Captain of the Bangladesh women’s cricket team, Nigar Sultana Joty, speaking after her side lost to Sri Lanka by seven runs in a group stage match of the women’s cricket World Cup last night. Bangladesh looked set to win the match but lost five wickets in seven balls in a dramatic batting collapse which handed Sri Lanka victory. The result means Sri Lanka are still a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. England, South Africa, and Australia have already secured three of the four semi-final spots up for grabs.

AFL star Scott Pendlebury sues former manager who allegedly stole millions

Collingwood AFL star Scott Pendlebury has filed a lawsuit against his former manager and friend Jason Sourasis, accusing him of taking more than $2 million from his investment accounts over several years.

The matter was first reported by The Herald Sun.

Context

Pendlebury alleges Sourasis made more than 50 unauthorised transfers from his investment company between 2015 and 2023.

Sourasis also allegedly failed to repay a $300,000 personal loan, which The Herald Sun said has now grown to more than $600,000 with interest.

Pendlebury says he only discovered the allegedly missing funds earlier this year, and immediately let  Sourasis go.

The alleged transfers were mostly made to entities linked to the soccer club Western United. The club is currently out of the A-League, after it was put into liquidation earlier this year.

What they said

Sourasis told the ABC: "The allegations are vehemently denied and, as a legal process has been started, we can't make any further comments at this stage."

Toronto Blue Jays deny Seattle Mariners fairytale and secure World Series spot

The Toronto Blue Jays are headed to the World Series after a dramatic 4-3 comeback win over the Seattle Mariners in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS). Here’s what to know.

What is the World Series?

The World Series is Major League Baseball’s (MLB) championship showdown.

The MLB is North America’s top professional baseball competition and is divided into two leagues: the American League and the National League. Each league is made up of 15 teams.

At the end of each season, the respective champions of both leagues meet in the World Series to decide who will lift the Commissioner’s Trophy.

Blue Jays beat Mariners

Toronto’s return to the World Series for the first time since 1993 came after the Blue Jays trailed 3-1 for most of the deciding game. The Blue Jays stormed back behind a heroic three-run homer from 36-year-old outfielder George Springer in the seventh of nine innings.

It marked yet another remarkable comeback for the Blue Jays, who lost the opening two matches of the series at home, but won the following two in Seattle.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Mariners remain the only team in MLB to have never played in a World Series.

Who are the Blue Jays playing?

The Blue Jays will face the powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers, led by Shohei Ohtani. The Japanese star produced one of the greatest postseason performances in MLB history in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series to help his team advance to the World Series for the second year running.

Ohtani struck out 10 batters as a pitcher and hit three home runs as a batter in the Dodgers’ clinching Game 4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. It’s rare for players to excel so much at both skillsets.

The Dodgers, winners of nine of their first 10 playoff games, are seeking back-to-back championships after claiming the title last year.

When does the World Series start?

The 2025 World Series begins Friday night (Saturday AEDT) at Rogers Centre in Toronto, with Games 1 and 2 hosted by the Blue Jays before the series shifts to Los Angeles. For Toronto, it’s a chance to dethrone the defending champions and bring the trophy home for the first time in 32 years.
