Good afternoon!
Overnight, Swiss alpine skier Franjo von Allmen won his third gold medal of this Winter Olympics in the men’s super-G.
Related (not random) fact: Allmen is the first alpine skier to win three golds at a single Games since Croatia’s Janica Kostelić in 2002. He is the first male skier to do so since France’s Jean-Claude Killy in 1968. All

Milano Cortina ‘26: The headlines
In case you missed it…
⛷️ Just months after being found guilty of credit card fraud against her own teammate, France’s Julia Simon claimed Olympic gold in the women's 15km biathlon at Milano Cortina 2026. Simon received a €15,000 ($AU25,000) fine and a three-month suspended sentence last October for fraudulently spending over €2,000 using card details belonging to teammate Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, who finished 80th in the same race. The team’s physiotherapist was also a victim of Simon’s criminal activity.

🎿 Defending Olympic champion Jakara Anthony's bid for back-to-back moguls gold ended in heartbreak at Milano Cortina 2026, finishing eighth after dominating the early rounds. The 27-year-old topped qualifying and led after the first final run before uncharacteristically skiing out of the middle section in her Super Final attempt. Olympic debutant Charlotte Wilson provided a bright spot for Australia, finishing sixth. 20-year-old American Elizabeth Lemley won the gold medal.

🏂 Scotty James and Valentino Guseli dominated qualifying to reach the men's snowboard halfpipe final. Five-time Olympian James topped the field with an opening run of 94.00, while Guseli finished sixth with consistent scores of 86.75 and 86.25. James called the competition the most competitive halfpipe event in Olympic history, with the top six all capable of winning gold on Saturday morning (AEDT).

⛸️ Holly Harris and Jason Chan became Australia's highest-placed Olympic ice dancers in history, finishing 18th. The pair scored 108.64 in their free dance to Clair de Lune, bringing their total to 176.39. France's Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron claimed gold, with Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates taking silver and Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier earning bronze.

Aussie silver medallist Jarryd Hughes set for fourth Olympic campaign depsite just “seven days on snow”

Hitting the slopes tonight for his fourth Winter Olympics is snowboarder and 2018 silver medallist Jarryd Hughes.
The 30-year-old competes in snowboard cross, a timed group event, where boarders are tasked with jumps, moguls, and wide curves on their way down the mountain.
Hughes told TDA he’s “excited for the opportunity to represent Australia” after facing some obstacles of his own.
Just 10 months ago, Hughes “shattered [his] foot”, sustaining a fracture at the FIS World Cup in Canada.
Since then, he hasn’t “really been able to snowboard”, securing a spot in the Aussie team with just “seven days on snow”.
At Milano-Cortina, four riders will go head-to-head in each run, with the top two qualifying for the 1/8 final, then filtering out to quarters, semis, and ultimately, finals. En route, there will be 24 elements to conquer across a 1,100m course.
Hughes first competed at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but it was 2018 in PyeongChang where he really shone, taking out the silver medal.
While Hughes didn’t quite back up this feat at the 2022 Beijing games, his determination will see him back on the board, ready to “get after it” at the Livigno Snow Park.

🏏 Australia cruised to a 67-run victory over Ireland in their T20 World Cup opener in Colombo, despite losing captain Mitch Marsh to a testicular injury in training before the match. Stand-in skipper Travis Head won the toss and batted, with Marcus Stoinis (45) and World Cup debutant Matthew Renshaw (37) guiding Australia to 6-182. Nathan Ellis starred for Australia with the ball, taking four wickets as Ireland were bowled out for 115. If Marsh remains unavailable for Australia’s next match against Zimbabwe on Friday, he is set to be replaced by Steve Smith. The star batter has been flown to Sri Lanka in case he is needed.

🏐 Australia completed a 3-0 series sweep of Jamaica with an 80-33 victory in Melbourne on Wednesday night. The Diamonds will come away from the series with some confidence as they prepare to defend their Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow in July. Coach Stacey Marinkovich experimented with different combinations throughout the series, rotating all 12 players.

🏎️ Reigning F1 world champion Lando Norris posted the fastest lap time on day one of Formula 1 preseason testing in Bahrain, with Australian teammate Oscar Piastri finishing fifth-quickest. Max Verstappen looks to be in ominous form after he completed 136 laps (Piastri did 54) in his Red Bull while also recording the second-fastest lap time. Preseason testing is a three-day practice session held before the F1 season where teams test their new cars and gather data, though lap times aren't always representative as teams run different fuel loads and programs.
