Good evening!

On Sunday at the Miami Open, Novak Djokovic set a new record for most wins in ATP 1000 matches, claiming his 411th victory.

Djokovic eclipsed the previous record of 410 held by none other than Rafael Nadal.

He may not have been at his best recently, but the records keep falling.

The number of steals Australian basketballer Dyson Daniels, who plays for the Atlanta Hawks, has recorded in the NBA (the top professional basketball league in the U.S.) so far this season. Daniels, nicknamed ‘The Great Barrier Thief’ for his remarkable ability to steal the ball from opponents, is the third player this century to surpass 200 steals in a season. With 11 games remaining in the season, the guard could still pass the all-time record of 244 set by John Stockton in 1992.

Cotton spent nine seasons with the Wildcats and is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players to have played in the NBL. The 32-year-old American is reportedly considering a move to Japan’s top basketball league, the B.League.

Random fact of the day

The first men’s surfing world champion was Australian man Peter Townend, who won the inaugural International Professional Surfing tour in 1976. While he did not actually win an event all year, Townend placed second in every event on the 1976 tour and accumulated enough points to be crowned world champion. Remarkably, he did not start surfing until he was 15 years old.

The Socceroos are back in action tonight - here’s what you need to know

The Socceroos are back in action tonight playing China in the third round of World Cup Qualifiers. Meanwhile, New Zealand has secured its place in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 16 years.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be played across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Socceroos v China

The Socceroos are on the road in the Chinese city of Hangzhou as they prepare to face China tonight at 10:00pm (AEDT). After beating Indonesia 5-1 last week, a win tonight would bring Australia another step closer to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. There is only one automatic qualification spot left in Group C after Japan beat Bahrain 2-0 last week and claimed the first spot with an unassailable lead at the top of the table.

China is currently in last place in Group C after losing 1-0 to Saudi Arabia last week. When Australia and China played each other in October, the Socceroos won 3-1.

Following tonight’s match, Australia will play its final two matches of this round of World Cup Qualifiers against Japan and Saudi Arabia in June.

You can watch the match on Paramount+. Kick-off is scheduled for 10:00pm.

NZ qualify for the first time in 16 years

New Zealand have qualified for the World Cup for the first time since South Africa 2010. The Kiwis beat New Caledonia 3-0 at Auckland’s Eden Park last night to earn the only automatic qualification spot from the Oceania Football Conference (OFC). The OFC includes 11 nations in the Pacific.

Kosta Barbarouses said: "This is my fifth attempt to get to a World Cup. I'm really emotional, very happy, had flashbacks to the last 15 years. We're going to another World Cup, I'm ecstatic."

Queensland Government announces new stadium for Brisbane 2032 Olympics

The Queensland Government has today announced its third Olympic stadium plan in four years, after the first two plans were abandoned.

Brisbane was announced as the host of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2021.

Today’s announcement includes plans for a new stadium and aquatic centre, and upgrades to other existing venues.

Stadium Announcement

On November 29 last year, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli announced that his government would commence a 100-day review of Olympic infrastructure. Last night, Crisafulli’s government signed off on the review.

The recommendations of the review were released today with the government confirming plans to build a new 63,000-seat stadium in Brisbane’s Victoria Park. The stadium will act as the epicentre for the games in 2032 and will replace the Gabba as Brisbane’s home of AFL and cricket. The site where the Gabba stands is set to become a residential and entertainment precinct.

The plan also includes a new National Aquatic Centre to be built on the site of the Centenary Pool at Spring Hill. That venue will host swimming, diving, water polo and artistic swimming events. $2.5 billion of government funding which had been allocated for Brisbane Live (a proposed, multipurpose entertainment and sporting arena) Arena will be redirected elsewhere.

Criticism

Crisafulli is being criticised for breaking election promises. As part of his campaign to become premier, he said that he would not be building a new stadium. In March 2024, he told ABC Radio Brisbane: "If you're asking me whether or not I support a new stadium, the answer is no, and I've been clear about that."

Today, Crisafulli said: "It became a choice between the embarrassment of hosting the games at QSAC or a new stadium at Victoria Park. In the end, the choice was clear. The Games must be held at a new stadium at Victoria Park."

More context

This is the third plan for the Brisbane Olympics, but the first under the Crisafulli Government.

The first plan proposed to re-develop the Gabba at a cost of $3 billion. The plan was unpopular due to local objections and the eye-watering cost. It was subsequently abandoned.

The second plan put forward by the state government, led by Labor’s Steven Miles at the time, was the redevelopment of the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre (QSAC). QSAC is a suburban stadium ten kilometres southeast of the Brisbane CBD. If the proposed plans had gone ahead, it would have been the smallest stadium to host blue-riband Olympic events (i.e. the men’s and women’s 100m) since Amsterdam hosted the Games in 1928. Crisafulli, who was the Opposition Leader at the time, labelled the plans as “cringeworthy”. He was then voted into power in October’s state election.

What they said:

During a press conference today, Crisafulli said: "Finally, Queensland has a plan. The time has come to just get on with it and get on with it we will."

He concluded his speech by saying: "We're not Paris, we're not LA. This will be better, and it'll be the Queensland way, and that's what will make the Games great."
