Good evening!

Modern-day coaches are dealing with issues some would have thought unimaginable only a decade ago.

This week, West Virginia University football coach Rich Rodriguez banned his players from dancing on TikTok.

He told reporters: “We try to have a hard edge, whatever. And you’re in there in your tights, dancing on TikTok. It ain’t quite the image of our program I want”.

The expected capacity of English Premier League club Manchester United’s new stadium, announced overnight. The stadium will be built next to the club’s existing Old Trafford stadium and is expected to cost £2 billion ($AU4.1 billion). The club’s billionaire co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said: “Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport.”

Tiger Woods will likely miss this year’s Masters after having emergency surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon. Woods sustained the injury while training at home in Florida. The 15-time major winner has not played an individual event on the PGA Tour since The Open in July last year. The Masters is the first men’s major of the 2025 season and begins on 10 April.

🏉 Brisbane Lions forward Lincoln McCarthy’s return to footy has been halted by a second ruptured ACL in two years. McCarthy sustained the same injury in Round 8 last year and watched the remainder of the Lions’ premiership-winning season from the sidelines. The Lions are set to play the Sydney Swans in a grand final rematch on Saturday afternoon in Round 1 of the AFL.

Piastri signs contract extension with McLaren

Australian F1 driver Oscar Piastri has signed a multi-year contract extension to stay with McLaren. The announcement comes as the drivers prepare for the first race of the 2025 season in Melbourne this weekend.

What happened

Piastri first joined McLaren in 2022 and found success last season, finishing fourth in the Driver’s Championship with two race wins and helping McLaren win the Constructors’ Championship for the first time since 1998. The 23-year-old was already contracted to stay at McLaren through the 2026 season, but his new contract will see him stay with the England-based team for several years to come.

This season, Piastri looks set to battle with teammate Lando Norris, who finished second last year, for priority within the team.

What he said

Piastri said: “There are so many talented and special people working at [McLaren] who have helped me to become a Formula One race winner very early in my career. Therefore, I’m very proud to be continuing to represent this legendary team for many years to come.”

McLaren CEO Zak Brown said: “Not only is he an incredibly talented driver, but his work ethic and cultural fit within the team made it a no-brainer to extend his time in papaya.”

PSG win dramatic penalty shootout against Liverpool to advance in Champions League

The Champions League action continued this morning, with Paris Saint-Germain winning a dramatic penalty shootout against Liverpool to advance to the quarter-finals of the Europe-wide tournament.

Champions League legs

Matches in the knockout stage of the Champions League are played in a two-leg format. This means teams can play their opposition at home and away and neither is disadvantaged. The team that has a higher ‘aggregate’ goal score across the two matches advances to the next round.

Results this morning

Barcelona started their second-leg match against Portuguese club Benfica with a 1-0 aggregate lead. The Spanish giant won this morning’s match 3-1 and breezed into the quarterfinals.

17-year-old Lamine Yamal was a standout performer with one spectacular goal and one assist, becoming the youngest ever to do so in the Champions League. This season he has scored 28 goals for the club.

Barcelona will next play the winner of tomorrow morning’s match between French club Lille and Germany’s Borussia Dortmund.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain beat Premier League leaders Liverpool. The score at full-time was 1-0 in Paris Saint-Germain's favour but 1-1 on aggregate, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

Liverpool’s fate was sealed after Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones both missed their respective penalties. Liverpool will now prepare for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on Sunday, while PSG will play the winners of the matchup between Aston Villa and Club Brugge tomorrow morning.

Bayern Munich and Inter Milan will play each other in the quarter-finals after beating Leverkusen and Feyenoord respectively. Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane became the first English player to score ten goals in a Champions League campaign after netting a goal in the 52nd minute of this morning’s 2-0 victory over Leverkusen.

Tomorrow’s matches

Tomorrow will see another four matches played to determine the four remaining teams in the quarterfinals.

Lille will play Borussia Dortmund at 4:45am (AEDT), followed by three simultaneous matches at 7:00am (AEDT).

Aston Villa will take on Club Brugge and are likely to advance as they lead the Belgian club 3-1 on aggregate.

A Spanish derby will take place between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, with the latter leading 2-1 on aggregate.

Arsenal will almost certainly play the winner of the Spanish matchup as they go into tomorrow’s leg against Dutch club PSV Eindhoven with a 7-1 lead.

The quarterfinals will begin on 8 April.
