Good afternoon!

May the Fourth be with you.

In the galaxy far, far away, the sports pages are filled with podracing, swoop racing, grav-ball, and nuna-ball.

Down here, we do things slightly differently (and better I think).

That being said, it would be pretty interesting to be a sports journo on Tatooine for a week or two.

The number of goals kicked by Sydney Swans small forward Malcolm Rosas Jr at the SCG yesterday. The haul helped Sydney defeat the Melbourne Demons by 17 points, a career-best display from the Northern Territory player. Rosas Jr became the first Swan to kick five goals in a half since Ben Ronke in 2018. He arrived from the Gold Coast Suns in a low-cost trade involving late draft picks. Sydney sits on top of the AFL ladder with a 7-1 record. Elsewhere on Sunday, the Suns beat the GWS Giants 83-63.

Quote of the day

"There have been some pretty special goals in my career, but I don't know if it gets more special than this."
Matildas captain Sam Kerr became Chelsea's all-time leading scorer in the Women's Super League on Sunday, scoring the opening goal in a 3-1 win over Leicester City. The headed goal was Kerr's 64th in the competition, moving her past the record previously held by Chelsea legend Fran Kirby. The result also secured Chelsea's place in next season's Women's Champions League. Kerr may not be at Chelsea next season after being linked with a move to the Denver Summit, an expansion side in the U.S’ top professional women’s football league.

Random fact of the day

On this day in 1949, a plane carrying the entire Torino football squad crashed into a hillside on the outskirts of Turin, Italy. All 31 people on board died in the crash. Torino, one of Italy's most decorated clubs at the time, were heavy favourites to win a fifth consecutive league title. They were awarded the championship posthumously at the request of the other teams in the competition.

🏉 The Penrith Panthers ended the Manly Sea Eagles' four-game winning streak under new coach Kieran Foran with an 18-16 victory on Sunday. Manly led 16-12 before the Panthers scored what proved to be the match-winning try with 20 minutes to play. A last-ditch two-point field goal attempt from Manly’s Joey Walsh fell short. Penrith continue to lead the competition after nine rounds with eight wins. Elsewhere, the Newcastle Knights defeated the South Sydney Rabbitohs 42-38, and the Cronulla Sharks defeated Wests Tigers 52-10.

Goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares recorded his 12th clean sheet of the season in a strong defensive performance In the other elimination final, Auckland FC defeated Melbourne City on a 7-6 in a penalty shootout after the match finished 1-1 following extra time at Go Media Stadium. The A-League Women's semi-finals got underway over the weekend. Melbourne City lead Melbourne Victory 1-0 after Saturday's first leg, with Leticia McKenna's free-kick bouncing off the post and into the net on the stroke of half-time. 🎾 Italy's Jannik Sinner became the first man to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles, defeating Germany's Alexander Zverev in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) in the Madrid Open final on Sunday. A day earlier, Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk claimed her first WTA 1000 title, beating Russia's Mirra Andreeva in straight sets in the women's final. Kostyuk refused to shake Andreeva’s hand after the match in protest of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Elsewhere, Russia-born Australian Daria Kasatkina won her first title since becoming an Australian citizen in January, defeating Germany's Tamara Korpatsch in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 7-5) at the WTA 125 Catalonia Open in Spain.

Aussies show growing athletics prowess at World Athletics Relays in Botswana

Australia had a record-breaking weekend at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana. All six Australian teams qualified for the next World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Beijing in 2027.

What is the World Athletics Relays?

The World Athletics Relays is a championship dedicated entirely to relay events, held every other year. This year’s event marked the first time it has been held on African soil.

Men's results

Australia's men's 4x400m team set a new national record in the qualifiers of 2:57.30.

The next day, the team claimed bronze in the final and broke the latest record with a time of 2:55.20. The time also made Australia the fourth fastest country in history over the distance.

Luke van Ratingen, Reece Holder, Thomas Reynolds and Aidan Murphy ran in the final, with Reynolds coming in for Matthew Hunt, who had been part of the team from the qualifiers. The previous national record was set in 1984.

Holder said: “It was so surreal and such a vibe out there. To come out and win a medal and do a time like that is pretty incredible.”

Meanwhile, the men's 4x100m team of Lachlan Kennedy, Joshua Azzopardi, Christopher Ius, and Rohan Browning equalled the national record of 37.87 seconds on Day 1 before finishing fourth in the final behind the U.S, South Africa, and Germany.

Women's results

Australia’s women's 4x400m team (Alice Dixon, Alanah Yukich, Sarah Carli, and Ellie Beer) did not make the final but ran a season best of 3:26.92 to finish second to Poland in their second qualifying race on the final day. The team wore black armbands in honour of Yukich's father, who died two weeks earlier.

Yukich said: “It’s been an emotional roller coaster, but at the same time uplifting to have this moment with these girls.”

The women's 4x100m team of Torrie Lewis, Ebony Lane, Monique Hanlon, and Georgia Harris were disqualified on Day 1 but recovered to win their second qualifying race on Day 2 in 42.88 seconds.

The mixed 4x400m squad of Cooper Sherman, Mia Gross, Matthew Hunt, and Alexia Loizou set a national record of 3:10.57 on Day 1 before finishing seventh in the final.

Piastri finishes on podium as Antonelli cruises to third straight win in Miami

Oscar Piastri claimed third place at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, finishing behind race winner Kimi Antonelli and McLaren teammate Lando Norris. The result marks Piastri's first podium of the season and caps a strong weekend for McLaren, with a double podium boosting the team's position in the constructors' championship.

What happened

Antonelli, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc collided at the first corner on the opening lap, with Verstappen spinning and dropping to the back of the field. Several drivers led during the opening stages before the race settled into a fight between Antonelli and Norris.

Mercedes brought Antonelli in for his pit stop a lap earlier than Norris –  a move that paid off, with the Italian emerging ahead and holding the lead for the remainder of the race. Norris closed in but couldn't find a way past, and was eventually told to back off due to a wing issue. Antonelli crossed the line 3.264 seconds clear.

Piastri passed Leclerc for third place with eight laps to go after a lengthy battle. Leclerc then spun shortly after and was overtaken by both George Russell and Verstappen on the final lap line.

After the race, Leclerc was handed a 20-second penalty for repeatedly cutting the track, dropping him to eighth and confirming Russell in fourth and Verstappen fifth.

The standings

Antonelli leads the drivers' championship with 100 points, 20 clear of Mercedes teammate Russell after four rounds. He is also the first driver in history to convert his first three pole positions into victories.

Leclerc sits third on 59 points, while reigning world champion Norris and Lewis Hamilton are tied for fourth on 51 points. Piastri is sixth with 43 points.

In the constructors' standings, Mercedes leads on 180 points, ahead of Ferrari (110 points) and McLaren (94 points).

What's next?

The Formula 1 season moves to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix on 22-24 May. Antonelli arrives on a three-race winning streak, with victory in Canada set to make it four wins from the opening five races of his second F1 season.

For Piastri, another strong result at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve would continue McLaren's upward momentum and strengthen his push up the drivers' standings.
