Good evening!

Aussie golfer Min Woo Lee has got off to a flying start at the PGA Player’s Championship and sits one shot off the lead after the opening round. While there’s plenty of golf still to be played, the last time an Australian golfer won the Player’s Championship was in 2022 when Cam Smith claimed victory.

Meanwhile, world number one Scottie Scheffler is three shots off the lead and looking to become the first player to win the tournament three consecutive times.

Also, the hype is building for the Australian Grand Prix. If you’re a Lewis Hamilton fan and can’t wait to see him race for Ferrari, this video is worth a watch.

Richmond, billed as the clear underdog, went on to complete a 54-point turnaround and win the match 82-69. Random fact of the day

On this day in 1971, Australian tennis legend Ken Rosewall won the Australian Open, beating defending champion Arthur Ashe in straight sets. Rosewall became the first men’s player in the open era to win a grand slam singles title without dropping a single set all tournament.

🏃‍♂️ Two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge will compete at this year’s Sydney Marathon. The 40-year-old said in a statement: "This is not only my first time running the TCS Sydney Marathon, but also my first time running in Oceania. Running in Australia is a great opportunity for me." The Sydney Marathon has recently become one of seven World Marathon Majors, elevating the status and prestige of the event.

Matildas striker Sam Kerr is edging closer to a return to football after being named in Chelsea’s 25-player squad for the upcoming women’s Champions League knockout stages. Kerr has been sidelined for 15 months after an ACL injury at the beginning of last year. Chelsea are scheduled to play fellow Matilda Mary Fowler’s Manchester City next Thursday 20 March. Kerr is not certain to play and Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor downplayed expectations: "I just want to make it clear I think it is not really fair to expect from a player who has been injured for, now, 15 months... to be the hero in the team."

🏉 The Newcastle Knights won their first home game of the 2025 NRL season, beating the Redcliffe Dolphins 26-12. Knights winger James Schiller starred for the home side with two tries. The win came at a cost for the Knights, with England international Kai Pearce-Paul facing a ban of up to three matches for a shoulder charge on the Dolphins’ Daniel Saifiti. The Knights are undefeated after two rounds, while the Dolphins remain winless.

Socceroos squad named ahead of must-win World Cup qualifiers

Socceroos coach Tony Popovic has named his 26-player squad to contest upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Indonesia and China. The squad includes six potential debutants, as well as some surprise omissions.

Socceroos squad

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the announcement was striker Mitch Duke being axed from the squad, after spending years as a regular member of the team. Meanwhile, Nectarios Triantis, Kai Trewin, Alex Grant, and Ryan Teague have all been called up to the Socceroos squad for the first time. Two more potential debutants are Paul Izzo and Tom Glover, who have been named to the squad before without taking to the field.

World Cup Qualifiers

Australia is playing in the third round of World Cup qualifiers and must finish in the top two teams in its group to gain an automatic qualification spot. The Socceroos are currently second in their group but hold just a one-point advantage over the bottom four teams in the group — Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China. It means the Socceroos will be treating their next two matches as must-wins. They play Indonesia next Thursday in Sydney and China five days later in Hangzhou.

Formula One begins this weekend. Here’s your preview

The 2025 season of Formula 1 begins this weekend at Melbourne’s Albert Park with the Australian Grand Prix.

Aussies in Formula One

No Australian has ever finished on the podium at the Australian Grand Prix. 23-year-old Oscar Piastri looks to be a genuine contender among this year’s top drivers, however.

Piastri won two races last year and finished fourth overall. Could his third season bring home a first-place finish for Australia?

Another Aussie, Jack Doohan, will begin his first season as a full-time driver this weekend with Alpine. Doohan, the son of Australian motorcycle legend Mick Doohan, is under pressure to perform given Alpine’s reserve driver is Franco Colapinto, who scored two top-ten finishes last year.

Storylines

The central storyline heading into this weekend’s GP is Lewis Hamilton’s debut with Ferrari, Formula One’s most successful team. The seven-time world champion departed Mercedes last year after 11 seasons. Ferrari are the defending champions at the Australian GP after Carlos Sainz won last year’s race. Hamilton could extend their streak, having won twice in 2008 and 2015.

After testing in Bahrain last month, the strongest team looks to be McLaren, which won last year’s team prize (the Constructors’ Championship). Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff told reporters on Thursday: “There’s just a gap to the McLaren [cars] that everyone has experienced”.

Meanwhile, defending world champion Max Verstappen has said his team Red Bull is “not the quickest at the moment”. Even if it is a slow start to the season for Verstappen, who is partnered with Kiwi Liam Lawson, there is no ruling out the Dutchman for a fifth consecutive drivers’ championship.

There is also some concern about the weather forecast. Qualifying on Saturday is set to be hot with temperatures reaching 36°C, while rain is forecast for Sunday.

Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar told The Daily Aus the possibility of “tricky conditions” on race day means there “will be a lot of opportunities for sure”.

Details

The drivers will complete 58 laps of the 5.3-km course, racing a total of 306km. Four drivers on the grid have won here before, with Hamilton, Verstappen, Sainz and Charles Leclerc all having found success in Melbourne.

Melbourne has hosted the Australian GP since 1996.

How to watch

Qualifying will take place on Saturday at 4:00pm.

The main race starts at 3:00pm on Sunday (AEDT). You can watch the Australian GP on Channel 10, Foxtel, and Kayo.
