Good evening!

This intro is dedicated to John McEnroe, who on this day 45 years ago had one of sport’s most memorable tantrums.

It was the opening day of Wimbledon in 1981. McEnroe served what he thought was an ace, the umpire ruled it out, and the four words that would later become the title of his autobiography came roaring out.

He aimed it at umpire Edward James, who he later branded "the pits of the world". McEnroe copped a fine, but none of it threw him off. He won the match in straight sets and went on to claim his first Wimbledon title, beating Sweden’s BjΓΆrn Borg in the final.

Wimbledon is back next Monday.

Quote of the day

β€œNew York didn't really like me. I love you guys.”
American golfer Wyndham Clark speaking after winning the U.S. Open, one of four men’s golf majors, at Shinnecock Hills in New York. The victory marks Clark’s second U.S. Open title, after his first major win at the same tournament in Los Angeles in 2023. Clark led by six shots going into the final round, then watched that lead shrink to a single shot before holding off fellow American Sam Burns. The New York crowd jeered Clark for much of the day, a year after an incident where he damaged a locker at the 2025 tournament.

Random fact of the day

The 2026 Super Rugby Pacific final on Saturday broke a record that had stood since 2009. The Hurricanes beat the Chiefs 60-5 in Wellington to claim the title, and their 55-point winning margin is the biggest in the competition's grand final history. The previous record was 44 points, which was set by South Africa's Bulls against the same Chiefs. The Bulls left Super Rugby in 2020.Β

🎾 Serena Williams is returning to Grand Slam singles. The 23-time major champion, whose last appearance in the singles draw of a major tournament was at the 2022 U.S. Open, has accepted a wildcard for the Wimbledon women's singles draw. The 44-year-old American only came back to competition this month in doubles, and was already set to partner with her sister Venus in the Wimbledon doubles. With no singles ranking, she is likely to draw a top seed in the opening round. A week of qualifiers begins tonight (AEST) before the draw is announced on Friday and the tournament begins on 29 June.

🏐 The Adelaide Thunderbirds are the first team into the Super Netball grand final. The minor premiers beat defending champions Melbourne Vixens 58-44 in the major semi-final in Adelaide on Sunday. South African shooter Elmeré van der Berg was a standout for the Thunderbirds, sinking 51 goals. In the minor semi-final, the West Coast Fever defeated the Melbourne Mavericks 56-52 to end the Mavericks' first-ever finals run. The Fever now meet the Vixens in a preliminary final this weekend, with the winner facing the Thunderbirds for the title.

πŸ‰ The New Zealand Warriors remain in second place on the NRL ladder after a 38-20 win over the North Queensland Cowboys in front of a sold-out Christchurch crowd on Sunday. Winger Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad starred for the Warriors with four tries. Meanwhile, the Melbourne Storm were too strong for the Canberra Raiders at home. The Raiders grabbed an early 16-0 lead before the Storm roared back and eventually ran out as 42-20 winners in Cameron Munster’s 250th game. In Sydney, the Roosters secured a 27-8 win over the Cronulla Sharks, snapping the Sharks' four-game winning streak. Young Kangaroos forward Cooper Trembath kicked a career-best four goals. At Marvel Stadium, the Western Bulldogs got their season back on track after last week’s loss to Adelaide with an 83-61 win over St Kilda. Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli led by example with 34 disposals and one brilliant goal. TDA’s World Cup update…

The World Cup rolls on into its second week in North America. Here’s what you need to know today.

What happened today?Β

In Group H, Cape Verde, the island debutants, scored their first ever World Cup goal through midfielder Kevin Pina and drew 2-2 with two-time champions Uruguay. European champions Spain beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 to move top of the group. Spanish teenager Lamine Yamal scored the opening goal to become the eighth-youngest scorer in World Cup history.

In Group G, Egypt came from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 to claim their first-ever World Cup win, 92 years after their debut. Belgium and Iran drew 0-0, leaving both winless.

Australia and Paraguay, what needs to happen?

The Socceroos lost 2-0 to co-hosts the United States on Saturday (AEST), with the U.S. taking top spot in Group D. That leaves Australia and Paraguay level on points and fighting for second after Paraguay beat TΓΌrkiye 1-0. A win or draw on Friday will send coach Tony Popovic's side to the round of 32. Even a loss could be enough as the eight best third-placed teams will also advance, but it would mean facing a nervous wait on other results across the tournament.Β

Paraguay playmaker Miguel Almiron is suspended and will miss the match after he was sent off against TΓΌrkiye for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent. FIFA introduced the rule before the tournament to prevent players from hiding abusive or discriminatory comments from officials and broadcasters. Almiron is the first player to be sent off at a World Cup for a regulation.

Who plays tomorrow?

There are four group games tomorrow. In Group J, defending champions Argentina take on Austria, and debutants Jordan play Algeria. In Group I, 2022 runners-up France play Iraq, coached by former Socceroos coach Graham Arnold, and Erling Haaland's Norway face Senegal.

Ben Stokes missed the second Test against New Zealand (Getty)

Ben Stokes set to return to England captaincy role following investigation into nightclub incident

England captain Ben Stokes will return to lead the side in this week's deciding Test against New Zealand after an investigation cleared him and fast bowler Gus Atkinson of any wrongdoing at a London nightclub.

Stokes has captained England's Test team since 2022, when he took over from Joe Root. The 35-year-old led England through the most recent Ashes, which Australia won 4-1. His attacking 'Bazball' approach alongside head coach Brendon McCullum has reshaped how the side plays the sport’s longest format.

Here is what to know.

What happened

Earlier this month, Stokes and Atkinson stayed out past the team's midnight curfew while celebrating England's win in the first Test at Lord's. A member of England's security staff was injured in an incident at the venue, and the pair were stood down for the second Test while the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) investigated.

Without their captain, England made five changes and lost the second Test to New Zealand by 253 runs, levelling the series. The affair also renewed focus on Stokes' relationship with McCullum, which both have denied was strained during the Ashes.Β

β€œWe've worked together intimately for four years,” McCullum said this week, pointing to a shared vision for the team.

The finding

The ECB found the players had breached their contractual duty to uphold high standards of conduct but cleared both of any responsibility for the violence. It found that Stokes was not involved in either incident, while Atkinson was attacked twice without provocation and did not retaliate.

Both were given written warnings, and a separate inquiry by the Cricket Regulator found they had no case to answer.

A familiar pattern

The episode is the latest in a string of off-field incidents involving England’s men’s team.Β

Vice-captain Harry Brook was fined and reprimanded over a clash with a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand last November, while footage of players drinking heavily during a mid-series break in Noosa circulated during the Ashes.Β

Those incidents prompted the midnight curfew that Stokes and Atkinson later breached.Β  Stokes is also no stranger to controversy, having been charged with affray over a street fight outside a Bristol nightclub in 2017. He was cleared at trial the following year, but missed that winter’s Ashes tour.

What's next

Stokes will resume the captaincy for the series decider at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, starting on Thursday.Β
