Good evening!

An awkward moment for cyclist Julian Alaphilippe on Stage 15 of the Tour de France overnight. The Frenchman crossed the line in a sprint finish and celebrated as if he’d won the stage.

Yes, he did outmuscle the riders next to him, but he didn’t realise that two riders had already crossed the line.

Belgium’s Tim Wellens won the stage (a minute and a half ahead of Alaphilippe), and his fellow countryman Victor Campanaerts finished second.

It turns out that Alaphilippe’s race radio broke during a crash earlier in the day, and his team had no way of communicating with him, hence the confusion.

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar is still the overall race leader. The riders will enjoy the second rest day of the tour before Stage 16 on Tuesday night (AEST).

🏉 The Lions beat the Wallabies 27-19 in the first Test at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. The opening half saw a back-and-forth battle with the Lions outscoring the Wallabies two tries to one and holding a 17-5 lead at half-time. Another try after the break extended the Lions lead, and in a case of too little too late, the Wallabies scored the final two tries of the match. This week, the Lions will play a combined First Nations Pasifika side on Tuesday, before they prepare for the second Test at the MCG on Saturday.

🏏 Australia defeated the West Indies by three wickets in the first of five T20 internationals between the two countries. Australia bowled first and limited the West Indies to 189 runs. Australia lost its first four wickets quickly, but a partnership from Cameron Green (51 runs) and Mitch Owen (50 runs) played a crucial role in helping the visitors reach the target set by the West Indies with seven balls remaining. The next match of the series is on Wednesday (AEST).

🏉 Collingwood’s lead at the top of the AFL ladder has been narrowed down to just two points after they lost 79-78 to the Fremantle Dockers on Sunday. The Dockers came back from 22 points behind in the final quarter to hand Collingwood their second consecutive defeat. Patrick Voss booted six goals for the Dockers, who are now seventh on the ladder. Australia’s SailGP crew, The Flying Roos, missed out on the final of the British Grand Prix following a controversial penalty. The Aussies were penalised for not giving Canada enough room in a four-boat incident. Australian skipper Tom Slingsby said: “I am still baffled by the decision. That cost us the final.” The Flying Roos ultimately finished in fourth place, while New Zealand won the event in Portsmouth, defeating Great Britain on its home waters in the final. With five events remaining, New Zealand leads the overall standings on 54 points with Australia close behind on 52 points.

Definition of the day: habit stacking

Meaning: habit stacking is a strategy for forming new habits by attaching them to existing ones.

Instead of overhauling your entire routine, you simply pair the new habit with something you already do - like taking your vitamins right after brushing your teeth, or doing a quick stretch while your morning coffee brews.

It’s a simple yet powerful way to build consistency without relying on motivation alone.

Got a routine you never skip — like your commute, skincare ritual, or morning scroll?

That’s the perfect moment to stack your new habit.

Support general health and wellbeing with the Blackmores Rapi-Melt range - a quick, water-free format that fits into your day with ease.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Super Netball Finals: Week one sees one team into the Grand Final and one team eliminated

The finals of Super Netball began on Sunday, with one team securing a spot in the Grand Final in two weeks and another team heading home. Here’s what you might have missed.

Adelaide Thunderbirds v Melbourne Vixens

The Minor Semi-Final between the Adelaide Thunderbirds (3rd) and Melbourne Vixens (4th) was an elimination final between the third and fourth-ranked teams after the regular season. The Vixens won the match 58-56, holding off the league’s two-time defending champions and ending their season in the process.

Vixens coach Simone McKinnis said: "We attacked the game, the players were fearless and they took it on. They backed themselves and there was just a calmness and a freedom about what they were doing.”

West Coast Fever v NSW Swifts

The Major Semi-Final between the West Coast Fever (1st) and the NSW Swifts (2nd) saw the Fever dominate the Swifts 77-45. The victory extended their record winning streak to 13 matches and reinforces the minor premiers tag as the competition favourites. As per usual, Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard was instrumental to the Fever’s attack. During the game, she reached the milestone of 9,500 national netball league career goals.

Since this was the Major Semi-Final, the Swifts are rewarded for finishing the regular season in the top two and get a second chance. They will have to quickly regroup before facing the Vixens in the Preliminary Final next week. The Swifts will be boosted by the return of captain Paige Hadley, who has missed the last two games with a foot injury. Meanwhile, the Fever were rewarded with a place in the Grand Final at Rod Laver Arena on 2 August.

Scheffler cruises to victory at The Open for fourth major title

Scottie Scheffler won The Open, the fourth and final men’s golf major of the year, by four shots. The American’s victory marks his fourth major title and second for the season. Here’s what you need to know.

What happened

Scheffler began the fourth and final round of The Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland with a four-shot lead over the field. While he did extend his lead to as much as seven shots during the round, he ultimately won by the same margin of four shots. He is the first player in over 100 years to have won each of their first four majors by at least three shots. His only falter was a double bogey (two shots over par) on the eighth hole.

Fellow Americans Harris English and Chris Gotterup finished second and third, respectively. For English, it’s the second time he has finished runner-up to Scheffler at a major this year. Gotterup has had a fairytale two weeks, first winning the Scottish Open a week ago and then recording his best finish at a major by a long way.

Is Scheffler an all-time great?

Scheffler’s triumph has earned him plenty of comparisons to Tiger Woods, who has won 15 majors in his career, with the most recent (and likely last) at the 2019 Masters.

Like Woods, Scheffler has demonstrated an incredible ability to successfully close out tournaments when he is leading after the third round. Scheffler has won 10 consecutive tournaments where he has held a solo lead through 54 holes (three rounds). Woods holds the record for converting outright leads into victories, having done it 37 times in a row from 1997 to 2009.

Scheffler has won at least one title at three of the four majors and is just missing a U.S. Open title to complete a career grand slam. Only six men’s players, including Woods and Rory McIlroy, have achieved this.

Scheffler responded to the comparisons with Woods saying: "I still think they're a bit silly. I just got one-fourth of the way there. I think Tiger stands alone in the game of golf."

Australians at The Open

Of the nine Australians who started the tournament, only Marc Lieshman made the weekend cut (the field of players is reduced by half after two rounds). Lieshman ended up finishing tied for 52nd.

What’s next?

The Women’s Open is set to begin on 31 July at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Wales. It is the fifth and final major on the women’s golf calendar. There will be high hopes for an outstanding Australian performance, given that Minjee Lee and Grace Kim won the two most recent major titles.
