Good afternoon,

Oscar Piastri has joined an exclusive list of people who have an animal species named after them. Beyoncรฉ has a horse fly, found in Queensland. Barack Obama has a parasitic flatworm, found in turtles. Taylor Swift has a millipede, found in Tennessee. Now, the McLaren driver has a wasp.

Researchers in Myanmar named a newly-discovered species of flat wasp โ€˜Gwesped piastriiโ€™ after deciding the colour of the amber it was preserved in reminded them of McLaren's papaya orange.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a Gwesped piastrii.

P.S. The results of yesterdayโ€™s poll show that 53% of you think the Olympics shouldnโ€™t experiment with non-traditional sports.ย

Fridayโ€™s headlines

Hereโ€™s whatโ€™s making news todayโ€ฆ

๐ŸŽพ The French Open men's draw has been blown wide open after world number one and favourite Jannik Sinner was knocked out in the second round overnight. Sinner was two sets up and serving for the match before fading badly in the Paris heat, eventually losing to Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerรบndolo, ranked 56th in the world. "I just kind of hit the wallโ€ฆI don't remember last time I felt this weak," Sinner said afterwards. It marks the first time since 2000 that the men's world number one has failed to reach the third round in Paris. Just five of the top 10 seeds remain in the draw, including Australian eighth seed Alex de Minaur. Withย Sinner and Alcaraz โ€“ winners of the last nine Grand Slam titles between them โ€“ย  both gone, it could boost Novak Djokovicโ€™s bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title, while second seed Alexander Zverev is chasing his first major crown.ย

๐Ÿ‰ New South Wales has completed the first Women's State of Origin series whitewash since the competition expanded to three games in 2024, defeating Queensland 12-4 on the Gold Coast. While the Blues already locked away the series 2-0 after wins in Newcastle (11-6) and Brisbane (14-10), last nightโ€™s win makes Isabelle Kellyโ€™s side the first Blues outfit to go unbeaten in a three-match series since the men in 2000. The Blues controlled the key moments, with strong goalโ€‘line defence and a late surge that shut down the Maroonsโ€™ comeback push. Yasmin Meakes won Player of the Series, saying โ€œyou made this so easyโ€ to her Blues teammates. Not a bad week to be a Blues fan.

๐Ÿ‰ Hawthorn has recorded its eighth straight win after a 119-67 victory over St Kilda on Thursday night. Hawks forward Jack Gunston starred with five goals on his return from injury, while the Saints failed to kick a goal in the first half for the first time since 1987. Both sides observed a moment of silence at the beginning of the match, paying tribute to former AFL coach and FightMND founder Neale Daniher, who died on Monday aged 65. All 14 clubs are wearing black armbands across Round 12 this weekend to honour Daniher. Tonight, Carlton will host the Geelong Cats at the MCG.ย

โšฝ๏ธ A viral social media campaign has turned All Whites defender Tim Payne into one of the World Cupโ€™s unlikely breakout stars after he was dubbed the tournamentโ€™s โ€œleast knownโ€ player. The movement began when Argentinian content creator Valen Scarsini urged his more than one million TikTok and Instagram followers to โ€œuniteโ€ behind Payne. Within 24 hours, Payneโ€™s follower count went from 4000 to over 1.2 million. The Kiwi defender thanked Scarsini, saying he was โ€œwondering why [his] socials were blowing upโ€.

๐Ÿ€ The San Antonio Spurs beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-91 in Game 6 of the NBAโ€™s Western Conference Finals today. Victor Wembanyama starred again for the Spurs with 28 points and 10 rebounds. The result sends the teams to a series-deciding Game 7, which will be played in Oklahoma City. The winner of that match will advance to the NBA Finals to face the New York Knicks.

Super Rugby: Final Round

Talking points: The final round of Super Rugby Pacific arrives with finals looming. The Brumbies (5th) can secure a home final if they beat Moana Pasifika (11th) and other results fall their way, while the Reds (6th) can climb as high as fourth when they host the Drua (10th) in Brisbane. Elsewhere, the Crusaders (4th) host ladder leaders the Hurricanes in Christchurch in a key test of their lateโ€‘season form, while the Force (8th) take on the Waratahs (7th) in Perth. The Force are chasing multiple wins over the Waratahs in the same season for just the third time in the clubโ€™s history. The weekendโ€™s results will lock in the finals picture (top six) ahead of the finals series. There may also be a lifeline for Moana Pasifika, whose future remains uncertain after entering liquidation earlier this week. New Zealand MP Winston Peters has hinted at a possible rescue package, telling media in Wellington earlier this week that "good news" was imminent. More to come.

French Open: Aussies in action

Talking points: Australia is down to two singles players as the French Open reaches its third round. Adam Walton, who stunned sixth seed Daniil Medvedev earlier in the week, was knocked out overnight by American Zachary Svajda. At the same time, fellow Australian Kimberly Birrell also fell in the second round. That leaves former world number eight Daria Kasatkina and eighth seed Alex de Minaur to fly the flag. Kasatkina faces the toughest possible draw against world number one Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday. The 28-year-old has won just two of her nine career matches against the Belarusian. De Minaur plays Czechia's Jakub Menลกรญk tonight from 9:50pm. The Demon has won all five of their previous meetings.

How to watch: Friday through Sunday on the Nine Network (free) and Stan Sport.

Champions League Final: PSG v Arsenal

Talking points: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will take on Arsenal in the final of Europe's biggest club football competition. PSG are the defending champions and could become just the second club in the Champions League era to retain the trophy, after Real Madridโ€™s three consecutive wins between 2016 and 2018. For Arsenal, it is the clubโ€™s first Champions League final in 20 years. The Gunners recently claimed their first Premier League title since 2004 and are now chasing their first Champions League title. They could also become just the ninth team to ever progress through the entire tournament unbeaten. The sides met in last seasonโ€™s semi-finals, with PSG winning both matches and advancing to the final.

How to watch: The match will kick off at 2am on Sunday (AEST). You can watch it on Channel 9 (free) and Stan Sport.
