Last night, Australian Olympian Rachel Gunn appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote the recent release of a Netflix documentary about her viral breakdancing performance at Paris 2024.

Raygun and Jimmy spoke a bit about her Olympic experience, and they also ate Vegemite.

🏋️‍♀️ Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has released her first statement since she went viral for soiling herself during a HYROX competition in Beijing last week. Part of the statement read: “Looking back, I regret the decision to not have stepped off the track… I take responsibility for my decision to continue and am deeply sorry for the discomfort and disruption it caused.” Organisers were criticised for not withdrawing Wietrzyk from the event at the time of the incident. Wietrzyk, a world record holder in the sport, won the event but said in her statement she will forfeit the points awarded to her.

⚽ Socceroo Cristian Volpato will challenge charges that he was driving with cocaine in his system. Weeks after making his World Cup debut for Australia, police pulled Volpato over on the Anzac Bridge in Sydney for driving 49km/h over the speed limit. It was the second time within a matter of hours that he had been stopped by police for speeding on the same bridge. The 22-year-old then failed a roadside drug test. A second test returned the same result. Volpato maintains his innocence and will now take the matter to court to contest the charge and $722 fine.

🎾 Australia is set to begin its Davis Cup campaign today with a tie against Poland in Brisbane. The Davis Cup is the premier men’s tennis international team tournament. Australia have won the Davis Cup 28 times, second behind the U.S. (32), and finished runner-up in 2022 and 2023. This weekend’s winner will earn an automatic spot in the 2027 Qualifiers, while the loser will have to fight their way through another group to reach the qualifiers. Australia’s team for this weekend includes Alex de Minaur, Adam Walton, James Duckworth, Rinky Hijikata and Max Purcell. The Team Captain is two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt. Speaking ahead of this weekend’s tie, Hijikata said: “There’s no better atmosphere or team environment in tennis.”

While we’re on tennis, here’s a fun fact you can tell your friends this weekend: for the first time since October 2002, none of men’s tennis’ ‘Big Three’ (Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal) are in the top 10. Djokovic dropped from No.5 to No.12 in the ATP rankings this week after his opening round loss at the U.S. Open.

Talking points: The penultimate weekend of the AFL season begins tonight with the competition’s top four teams fighting for a spot in next week’s AFL Grand Final. Tonight, the Sydney Swans will host the Fremantle Dockers at the SCG. The Swans have had a week off after a 53-point win over the Brisbane Lions in a qualifying final a fortnight ago, while the Dockers have gone the long way around. The minor premiers were beaten convincingly by Hawthorn in their qualifying final before bouncing back to defeat Geelong in the semi-finals last week. In their only meeting this season, the Dockers won 111-73. On Saturday, Hawthorn will host the Brisbane Lions at the MCG. Hawthorn have also had a week off while the Lions are coming off a 53-point dismantling of the Adelaide Crows. The Lions, AFL premiers in 2024 and 2025, are favourites to make a fourth consecutive Grand Final appearance after beating Hawthorn 125-58 earlier this season. Remarkably, it’s the sixth time in the past seven years that the Lions are playing in the preliminary finals.

Talking points: The Australian men’s cricket team will be in action not once but twice this weekend as they contest the two remaining ODIs in a three match series against Zimbabwe. The Aussies won the opening match on Wednesday off the back of strong performances from batter Matt Renshaw, who scored his first One-Day century for Australia, and bowler Nathan Ellis, who took five wickets. Australia will be favourites to win both but Zimbabwe can’t be underestimated, having upset Australia on home soil in 2022. All three matches are being played at the same venue in Harare, the capital of the country.

How to watch: The second ODI will begin at 5:30pm today (AEST), and the third will start at 5:30pm on Sunday. You can watch the matches on Kayo or Foxtel.

Talking points: It’s win or go home for several NRL and NRLW teams this weekend. In the NRL, the Roosters host the Sharks on Saturday, with the winner to face the Dolphins in the preliminary final. Angus Crichton returns from injury for the Roosters and the Sharks team remain unchanged. On Sunday, the Warriors host the Newcastle Knights, with the winner facing minor premiers Penrith. Dylan Lucas is in Newcastle’s extended squad after a broken ankle with a final decision to be made on Saturday. In the NRLW, the Canberra Raiders face the Wests Tigers tonight in an elimination final, having beaten them 22-10 last week. The Tigers welcome back captain Kezie Apps and fullback Caitlin Turnbull from injury. On Saturday, the Brisbane Broncos face the Newcastle Knights for a preliminary final spot. Having won their last four games against the Knights, the Broncos field an unchanged side, with former Knights Jesse Southwell, Romy Teitzel, and Tamika Upton facing their old club. Broncos’ Jada Ferguson will also make her 50th NRLW appearance.
