🏉 Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has selected Broncos star Reece Walsh to start at fullback ahead of Roosters captain James Tedesco in Sunday’s Rugby League World Cup semi-final against Samoa. Walsh was the man of the match in last week’s 66-6 win over the Cook Islands and has kept Tedesco on the bench. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Kalyn Ponga has returned to the Kiwis squad ahead of Saturday’s semi-final against Tonga. Ponga’s inclusion as a reserve comes just three weeks after breaking his arm against the Kangaroos.

The Socceroos will have to wait almost a year for another tilt at Asian Cup glory (Getty)
Saudi Arabian-hosted Asian Cup postponed for nearly a year amid Middle East conflict
The Socceroos will have to wait almost another year for their next chance to win the Asian Cup, after the tournament was postponed due to the conflict in the Middle East.
What is the Asian Cup?
The Asian Cup is Asian football’s biggest international tournament that is held every four years. Australia won its only Asian Cup in 2015, beating South Korea on their home soil. Qatar are the defending champions, having won the 2023 tournament.
Postponement
The 2027 Asian Cup, due to be played in Saudi Arabia in January and February, has been pushed back almost a year to December 2027, pending FIFA approval.
The Asian Football Confederation cited “exceptional circumstances” in the region when announcing the postponement. The decision follows Houthi attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities, including a strike on Riyadh’s international airport last month that killed at least 12 people.
What does it mean for Tony Popovic?
It complicates things for Socceroos coach Tony Popovic, whose contract extension, signed ahead of the World Cup, runs to a fixed date rather than the end of the tournament. This month’s internationals could be his last in the job unless Football Australia strikes a new deal to take him through to the rescheduled tournament.

Jesús de Miguel is believed to have died from a cardiac arrest after the collision (Getty)
Spanish footballer dies following on-field collision with opposition goalkeeper
A Spanish professional soccer player has died after a heavy on-field collision with another player during a match on Tuesday. Following the incident, Spanish police are investigating it as a possible case of involuntary manslaughter.
Here’s what to know.
What happened
Jesús de Miguel, a striker playing for CD Tenerife in Spain’s second division, La Liga 2, died on Tuesday after an on-field collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono. The collision is believed to have caused de Miguel to have a cardiac arrest. Both players were chasing an airborne ball near the middle of the field with Owono leaping high into the air and hitting de Miguel in the chest with his knee.
The collision happened in added time after the 90th minute and the referee sent Owono off with a red card immediately afterwards. Officials abandoned the match as medical staff treated de Miguel for five minutes before taking him to hospital.
The club confirmed Miguel’s death in a statement released on Tuesday morning.
Response
The statement from CD Tenerife said: “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today.”
FC Andorra also released a statement, saying: “The first thing we want to do is extend our most sincere condolences to his family, CD Tenerife, and all those close to him. We know that no words can ease such pain, but we want them to know that we stand by their side and deeply share their sadness.”
Owono has since deleted his social media accounts after receiving online abuse.
Players and clubs across the international football community, including Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé, have also expressed their grief following the news.
Police investigation
In the wake of the incident, Spanish police are investigating a possible involuntary manslaughter charge against Owono. This is common practice in Spain, where any death that is not from natural causes automatically triggers an investigation.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui told Spanish news agency EFE that a criminal trial is unlikely given that the incident happened during play.
