Happy Friday!

If you think about it, most sports could double as a long-running TV series.

There's a rotating cast of characters, way too much drama, and every year ends with a season finale.

After what ‘Drive to Survive’ did for Formula One, turning a sport most people couldn't explain into something their mates wouldn't shut up about, you have to wonder what that same treatment could do for the AFL.

Well, we're about to find out because 'Final Siren: Inside the AFL' has just been released on Prime Video.

See if you can squeeze it in this weekend alongside the Women's Asian Cup, NRL in Vegas, Super Rugby, the T20 World Cup, and WNBL Grand Final!

Friday’s headlines

Here’s what’s making news today…

🏏 India scored 256 runs, the second-highest total in men’s T20 World Cup history, in a 72-run win over Zimbabwe in Chennai overnight. The result, combined with South Africa’s nine-wicket victory over the previously unbeaten West Indies, confirmed South Africa’s place in the semifinals alongside England. South Africa chased 177 in 16.1 overs and remain unbeaten in the tournament. There are still four matches remaining to determine the other two teams in the semis. Tonight, England will take on New Zealand at 12:30am (AEDT).

🏉 Sydney Swans star Errol Gulden gave fans a brief injury scare, but the Swans still powered to a 38-point AFL pre-season win (97-59) over the GWS Giants in wet conditions at Henson Park. Gulden rolled his ankle and left the field early but is expected to be fit for next week’s Opening Round clash against Carlton. Meanwhile, the Swans’ Angus Sheldrick had 30 disposals. Later, the Brisbane Lions demonstrated their readiness to strive for a three-peat with a 126-101 win over the Gold Coast Suns. Logan Morris starred for the Lions with four goals.

🏀 The WNBL grand final series opened last night, with the Townsville Fire taking an 88-79 win over the Perth Lynx in front of their home crowd. The game saw 27 lead changes before the Fire took control with a strong third-quarter run. Courtney Woods led the scoring and steadied Townsville down the stretch. Perth now return to their home court for Game Two on Sunday as they look to level the series.

Sport to keep an eye on this weekend…

Rugby League: NRL Round 1 in Las Vegas

Talking points: The NRL season opens in Las Vegas on Sunday with two games at Allegiant Stadium. The Newcastle Knights face the North Queensland Cowboys at 1:15pm AEDT, with Newcastle unveiling marquee signing Dylan Brown under new coach Justin Holbrook after last year’s wooden spoon. North Queensland, boosted by new hooker Reed Mahoney, will look to build on a steady pre-season. Later, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs meet the St George Illawarra Dragons, with the Bulldogs favoured but wary of a Dragons side eager to rebound from two trial losses.

How to watch: You can watch the NRL on Foxtel and Kayo. The Bulldogs and Dragons match will also be on Channel 9.

Sailing: SailGP Sydney

Talking points: Sydney Harbour takes centre stage this weekend as Australia’s Flying Roos chase another home win at the Sydney Sail Grand Prix. Tom Slingsby’s Australian crew sits atop the 2026 standings and boasts three wins in five Sydney events, but evening “twilight” racing at 5.30pm (AEDT) adds a new variable. The tight, gusty harbour course will test crews, while the absence of New Zealand and France after their Auckland collision opens the field. Keep an eye on Sweden’s Artemis SailGP Team, led by Nathan Outteridge, who have impressed early this season.

How to watch: The Sydney Sail Grand Prix will begin racing from 5:30pm on Saturday and Sunday. You can watch SailGP on SBS and Fox Sports.

Women’s Asian Cup: Matildas v Philippines

Talking points: The Asian Cup begins on Sunday night with Australia hosting the Philippines in Perth. It is the Matildas’ first major tournament on home soil since the 2023 World Cup and an early chance to set the tone in Group A, which also includes South Korea and Iran. Coach Joe Montemurro has named a 26-player squad led by Sam Kerr, with Steph Catley and Ellie Carpenter as vice-captains. The Philippines are ranked 41st in the world but were Asian Cup semi-finalists in 2022 and are capable of an upset, making this a genuine opening test.

How to watch: The tournament opener will kick off at 8pm on Sunday (AEDT). You can watch the match on Channel 10 and Paramount+.
