On this day in 1991, American sprinter Carl Lewis set a new men’s 100m world record of 9.86 seconds at the world championships in Tokyo.

Lewis was the first man to legally run under 9.90 seconds.

Thirty-five years later, Lewis sits 37th on the all-time fastest list, just behind Aussie Lachlan Kennedy (9.85 seconds). The current world record is 9.58 seconds and was set by Jamaica’s Usain Bolt in 2009.

The number of NRL games Brisbane Broncos captain Adam Reynolds has played across his career. The two-time premiership winner will miss the remaining two games of his final NRL season due to calf injuries. Reynolds, who began his career with South Sydney and is the Rabbitohs’ all-time leading pointscorer, said: “I’ve had a great career… I’m extremely fortunate I get to carry some great memories moving forward.”

⚽ Australian football star Kyra Cooney-Cross has returned to England’s Women’s Super League (WSL) with Arsenal. The Matildas midfielder took an extended break from football to spend time with her late mother, who died in July following a battle with cancer. Cooney-Cross was substituted on in the second half of Arsenal’s pre-season fixture against Paris FC. Arsenal’s first fixture of the WSL season will be against Brighton & Hove Albion on 6 September.

🏉 Sydney Swans assistant coach Mark McVeigh has officially been named as the senior coach of the AFL’s Essendon Bombers. McVeigh, a former Essendon player himself, will take over at a time when the only way seems to be up. Essendon finished 18th on the ladder this year, winning just two matches. McVeigh steps in for Dean Solomon, who was named interim coach after the mid-season departure of Brad Scott.

🚴 Cyclists were forced to abandon the third stage of the Vuelta a España with just 15km remaining after a hailstorm in the French Pyrenees. The Vuelta a España is one of cycling’s three Grand Tour races, alongside the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. The majority of the race’s 21 stages are contested in Spain. After three stages, Slovenian world champion Tadej Pogačar leads the overall ranking by eight seconds and will start Stage 4 in the red jersey. The five-time Tour de France winner is seeking his first victory at the Vuelta.

The NRL has approved a one-off rule change to let South Sydney Rabbitohs forward Jai Arrow reach 100 games for the club.

Arrow was forced to medically retire in May following a motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis.

On Saturday, the 31-year-old will lead South Sydney out against his former club, the Gold Coast Titans, in Queensland. The following Friday, he will do the same at Allianz Stadium in Sydney against the Sydney Roosters.

In both, he will be subbed off after the referee’s whistle signals kick-off but before the ball is in play. Being named in the team and on the field for the opening whistle in both matches will take him to 100 games for the Rabbitohs and 180 NRL games overall.

To accommodate the initiative, Australian Rugby League Commission boss Peter V'landys signed off on a one-off agreement to allow the Rabbitohs an extra bench player, with the support of Rugby League Players Association chief Clint Newton.

Arrow retired from the NRL after making his diagnosis public in May. During his career, he played 12 State of Origin games for Queensland and reached the 2021 NRL grand final with South Sydney.

Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly said: “We believe this will provide great inspiration for everyone watching the game from the stadium or at home, showing that MND will not hold Jai, or anyone else, back from achieving what they want to achieve in life.”

The conduct of players from the Richmond Tigers during the AFL club’s ‘Mad Monday’ celebrations has come under fire after 7News broadcast a video of the players at a pub in Gippsland.

Here’s what to know.

Mad Monday is a long-running tradition across football codes marking the close of a club's season for teams whose finals hopes are over. It is called ‘Mad Monday’ because it's often held on the first Monday after the end of the regular season. Players usually spend the day drinking together, sometimes in costume.

A video published by 7News on Monday captures Tigers players at the Garfield Hotel, a pub in Victoria's Gippsland region. It shows midfielder Josh Smillie bending over as a teammate slaps him repeatedly on the buttocks, and vice-captain Tim Taranto lashing a teammate across the back with a belt.

Commentators have widely read the acts as referencing the alleged sexual assault involving five Sydney Swans players in Melbourne a week earlier.

The video comes a week after five Sydney Swans players (Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, James Jordon, Nick Blakey, and Riley Bice) were told by the club they wouldn’t play for the rest of the season. The group were suspended for breaching club standards by staying out late and drinking following the club’s win over Essendon last week.

The players have been linked to a Victoria Police investigation into an alleged sexual assault at the Melbourne hotel where the Swans team and staff were staying. TDA does not suggest that any of the players are being accused of sexual assault, only that they have been connected to the police investigation.

A statement released by Richmond this afternoon said: “Richmond is aware of a video circulating from a player end of season gathering. The Club has spoken to the players who have expressed their embarrassment over their behaviour. The players are adamant they were in no way referencing or making light of recent matters.”

Labor MP Dan Repacholi told the Today show this morning: “Right now we need good blokes out there having the conversations around this and calling this out for what it is because this is unacceptable, and we need to make sure we do better.”

Meanwhile, the Garfield Hotel, where the players were captured on camera, released a statement defending the players. It said: “For such a young group, they were extremely respectful and a fun group of boys to deal with… They enjoyed their afternoon and moved on. In our view, this has been blown out of proportion. Two members of the media were waiting on their arrival this morning and remained on site filming in the hope of capturing a misstep”.
