Good evening!

Add this to the compilation of athletes injuring themselves during a celebration.

Nascar driver Connor Zilisch won the Watkins Glen International on the weekend, and during his celebrations fell off the top of the car and broke his collarbone.

It made for fairly unusual post-race picture!

The number of top-five finishes English golfer Tommy Fleetwood has had on the PGA Tour without winning a title. Fleetwood finished tied for third at the St. Jude Championship after starting the final round of the tournament with a one-shot lead. Fellow Englishman Justin Rose won the tournament, beating U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun in a playoff and becoming the first player over the age of 40 to win on tour this year. Fleetwood said: “All these experiences and these close calls, like I say, there’s no point in allowing them to have a negative effect on what happens next.”

🎾 Alexei Popyrin, Adam Walton, and Maya Joint are the last Australians standing after the second round of the Cincinnati Open, the last warm-up tournament before the U.S. Open later this month. Australia’s top-ranked male and female players, Alex de Minaur and Daria Kasatkina, were both beaten in the second round. Walton produced a career-best performance to overcome former world number one Daniil Medvedev after losing the opening set. Popyrin, who is currently at a career-high ranking of 19, will play Andrey Rublev in the third round, and 19-year-old Joint will look to continue her impressive run when she plays the tournament’s 12th seed, Ekaterina Alexandrova.

🏉 Charlotte Caslick has been ruled out of the Women’s Rugby World Cup after she was unable to recover from ankle surgery in time. The Olympic gold medallist, who made the switch from sevens to 15-a-side to play in a World Cup, was named in Australia’s 32-player squad last week, but medical advice forced her withdrawal. She has been replaced by uncapped centre Manu’a Moleka, with coach Jo Yapp leaving the door open for Caslick to return as an injury replacement. The Wallaroos left for England on Monday afternoon and will play their first group-stage match against Samoa on 23 August.

🎯 The Australian Darts Masters saw the world’s best descend on Wollongong over the weekend. 18-year-old Englishman Luke Littler defeated Belgium's Mike De Decker 8-4 in the final. It’s the first World Series event the young darts champion has won this year after six attempts. He said: "It's not gone to plan this year in the World Series but there are plenty of opportunities to win and I've finally picked one up." The next World Series event will take place in Auckland next weekend.

Two Japanese boxers die days after fighting on the same night in Tokyo

Two professional boxers have died following different bouts at the same event in Tokyo last week. Both were 28 years old and sustained fatal brain injuries. Here’s what to know.

What happened

On 2 August, Shigetoshi Kotari collapsed after a 12-round title fight with Yamato Hata for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) super-featherweight belt. He was taken to the hospital for emergency brain surgery, but died on Friday.

Earlier in the night, Hiromasa Urakawa had been knocked out by Yoji Saito in the sixth round of their featherweight fight. He also underwent brain surgery but died in the days that followed.

Both athletes required surgeries for subdural haematoma, which occurs when blood collects between the skull and the brain.

Response

The Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) responded by immediately reducing all OPBF title fights from 12 rounds to 10 rounds. The governing body has also launched a review of weight-cutting procedures, which can increase dehydration and heighten the risk of brain injury.

The World Boxing Organisation said: “We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Japanese boxing community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Deaths in boxing

While uncommon, deaths in professional boxing still occur. The sport’s physical nature and the goal of landing head and body blows mean the risk of serious injury is always present. Three professional boxers have now died this year. In February, Ireland’s John Cooney died of a brain injury following a fight in Belfast.

Medical advances such as mandatory ringside doctors and pre-fight brain scans in some countries have reduced fatality rates compared to earlier decades, but they have not eliminated the risk.
