Good evening!

On this day in 1972, cricketers Ian and Greg Chappell became the first pair of Australian brothers to both score a century (100 runs) in the same innings. The Chappells went on to achieve the feat twice more during their careers.

They weren’t the only Aussie brothers to do so though. The Waughs (Mark and Steve) did it twice, and the Marsh brothers (Shaun and Mitch) have done it once.

Speaking of cricket, Australia will take on South Africa at 7:15pm tonight in the second T20 of a three-match series. You can watch the match on Foxtel or Kayo.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Czech athlete Ester Ledecká won gold in both alpine skiing and snowboarding. She became the first and only person to win Olympic gold as a skier and snowboarder. Ledecka is still competing on the world stage across both disciplines.

🏉 Two-time Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe is set to retire from the AFL at the end of the season. The 33-year-old, who has played for the Fremantle Dockers for his entire 16-season career, announced his retirement on Monday. The three-time All-Australian has only played five matches so far this season due to injury. Last week, Port Adelaide legend Travis Boak also announced he will be retiring at the end of this season. When Fremantle and Port Adelaide played each other on the weekend, the two veterans swapped jumpers. While Boak’s career will come to an end before finals, Fyfe’s is not complete yet; Fremantle are fourth on the AFL ladder and almost certainly destined for finals with two regular season matches remaining.

🎾 19-year-old Maya Joint was beaten overnight at the Cincinnati Open, leaving no Australian women left in the draw of the last major warm-up tournament leading into the U.S. Open. Joint lost in straight sets to the tournament’s 12th seed, Ekaterina Alexandrova. In the men’s draw, Alexei Popyrin and Adam Walton are the last two Australians in the Round of 32. Popyrin is set to play ninth seed Andrey Rublev, and Walton will take on 22nd seed Jiri Lehecka.

Boomers maintain flawless Asia Cup record as they surge into the quarter-finals

The Boomers are into the quarter-final of the Asia Cup after keeping their flawless record at the tournament intact through the group stage over the weekend.

Here’s what to know.

Group Stage

In the early hours of Saturday morning (AEST), the Boomers defeated Lebanon 93-80 in a rematch of the 2022 Asia Cup final.

In their third and final match of the group stage on Sunday, the Boomers dominated Qatar 110-82.

The results saw the Boomers finish at the top of Group A (they also beat South Korea last week) and earn an automatic spot in the quarter-final.

With many of the Boomers usual stars missing, wing Jaylin Galloway has been the team’s top performer, recording an average of 18 points per game.

Australia have not lost a match at the Asia Cup since joining the tournament in 2017. This year, they are seeking a third consecutive Asia Cup title.

What’s next

Australia are set to take on the Philippines in the quarter-final. The Aussies are ranked number seven in the world, while the Philippines are ranked 34th and won just one of their three group matches.

The match begins tomorrow at 9:00pm (AEST). You can watch the Asia Cup on Foxtel or Kayo.

Players at the women’s Rugby World Cup will be wearing smart mouthguards. What are they?

World Rugby has announced that almost every player at the upcoming women’s World Cup will be wearing smart mouthguards.

The technology is set to improve the safety of players on the field, especially in regards to concussion.

Here’s what to know.

Smart mouthguards

When the Women’s Rugby World Cup begins later this month, all players (except two who wear braces) will use smart mouthguards that flash red when they register a heavy head impact.

When the referee sees the red light, they will stop play so that the player can be given a head injury assessment.

For the mouthguard to flash, it has to register an impact of at least 65 g of force and 4,500 radians per second squared. The radians metric measures how quickly the head rotates after an impact.

According to World Rugby, since smart mouthguards were introduced in 2023, around 85% of men’s players now wear them.

Caution against over-reliance

While the technology will be useful, officials have been cautioned not to over-rely on it.

Dr Lindsay Starling, a science and medical manager at World Rugby, said: “What we need to be careful not to do is… put too much power in the hands of the data. Data is incredibly powerful, but in this case the data might not tell 100% of the picture.”

What’s next?

The technology is set to be introduced more widely in elite men’s and women’s rugby beyond this year’s World Cup. Discussions are underway about whether to share impact data publicly, but concerns remain over medical privacy.

Broadcasters have expressed interest in displaying G-force metrics during coverage, according to The Guardian, although this will depend on player consent and how the information is managed.
