Good afternoon,
The Australian men’s ten-pin bowling team has won silver at the International Bowling Federation’s World Cup in Munich.
The Aussies made it all the way to the final before falling just short of gold against France.
The team of Callum Borck, Liam Cochrane, Jackson Buckingham, and Seth Gray had booked their spot in the final with a five-game win over Malaysia, where they reeled off nine consecutive strikes to seal a 275-194 victory.
The women’s team also had a strong campaign, reaching the last 16.
Bowling is not just for birthday parties.

The number of years since China last won the women’s team title at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. China ended that drought in Rotterdam on Wednesday, finishing ahead of the United States and Japan, who took silver and bronze. The result also ended a run of seven straight team golds for the United States in the event.

Snooker player Mark Allen fought back tears after losing 4-2 to friend Jordan Brown in the first round of the Northern Ireland Open, his first match since April. The 40-year-old later revealed he had spent ten weeks in a mental health clinic before discharging himself to play in Belfast, where his professional career began in 2005. He said he was seriously considering retirement and did not “see a future with snooker in it.”

One of football’s more bizarre celebrations came from striker Edmilson, who scored for Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro in 1998, then pulled a carrot from his shorts and ate it in front of the opposition fans. The opponents were América Mineiro, a cross-town rival nicknamed ‘the Rabbits’.

🏏 Australia’s men’s cricket team is fighting to save the second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha after collapsing to 99 runs all out in their first innings, their lowest total in a decade. South African allrounder Marco Jansen took five wickets (5/33) and scored a half-century as South Africa posted a total of 425 and enforced the follow-on. It’s only the third time that Australia has been asked to follow on since 1998. Australia will begin Day Five at 4/156 with Travis Head (87 runs) and Scott Boland (2) at the crease and trailing by 170 runs.

🏃 A two-time Australian national sprint champion has been charged with a child sex offence. Jake Doran won the men’s 100m at the 2022 national championships and represented Australia at the 2022 world championships and Commonwealth Games. The 26-year-old was arrested last week in Townsville following an investigation into the indecent treatment of a child under 16. Doran had been training athletes in Townsville, but Athletics Australia said he holds no formal role with the governing body and they have suspended him from the sport altogether. He is out on bail and is due back in court on 5 November.

🏈 Former Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Allen Bailey has died at 37. His family told TMZ they believe he died of natural causes, though no official cause has been confirmed. The Chiefs drafted Bailey into the NFL in 2011, and he spent eight of his ten seasons in the league in Kansas City before finishing his career with the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Andy Reid, who coached him for six seasons, called him “one of my favourite players,” and the Chiefs described him as “an excellent teammate, generous man, and kind soul.”

Silver Ferns extend winning streak on home soil to take 2-0 lead in Constellation Cup
The Silver Ferns have taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the Constellation Cup netball series after beating Australia’s Diamonds 62-50 in Christchurch. It marks New Zealand’s 12th straight win over Australia on home soil.
What happened
New Zealand shooter Grace Nweke terrorised Australia in attack again, scoring 49 goals from 52 attempts. Australia trailed by just three points with one quarter remaining, but New Zealand raced away, winning the quarter 17-8.
The Diamonds found some joy through debutant Jessie Grenvold and returning vice-captain Kate Moloney, but could not match New Zealand’s intensity across four quarters.
What’s next?
The four-Test series now shifts to Australia, with the Diamonds needing to win both remaining matches just to level it on wins. If the series ends up drawn 2-2, then the series winner is determined on goal percentage.
If the Silver Ferns win all four matches, they would not only reclaim the Constellation Cup from 2025 winners Australia but also take the world number one ranking for the first time since 2013.
Game three is in Sydney on Sunday, before the fourth and final match of the series in Melbourne the following Wednesday.

Jalen Hurts will miss the rest of the NFL season (Getty)
An NFL player was cleared to play and travel with a blood clot. Now his medical care is under scrutiny.
The NFL Players Association is demanding a full investigation into the medical care of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts after blood clots were found in both his lungs days after he was cleared to play in London with a blood clot in his calf.
Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the NFL season, although his medical team says he is expected to make a full recovery.
Here’s what you need to know.
What happened
Hurts injured his left calf during the Eagles’ game against the Los Angeles Rams on 4 October, when he was struck by the opponent’s spikes.
After travelling to London for the team’s next game, an ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot in his calf.
This type of clot forms in a vein close to the surface of the skin, rather than in a deeper vein.
The Eagles said their medical staff and doctors in London assessed the results and determined Hurts could safely play. He then played the full game against the Jacksonville Jaguars before flying back to the U.S. with the team.
The danger of a superficial blood clot is that there is a chance it can break loose and travel to the lungs. That causes a pulmonary embolism, a blockage that can be fatal. Doctors say physical trauma and long periods of immobility, such as playing a contact sport or sitting through a long flight, are both known risk factors for a clot to worsen or shift. Hurts did both.
A follow-up scan a few days later showed the clot had moved. Further testing later confirmed Hurts had deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and bilateral pulmonary embolisms, meaning blood clots in both his lungs.
A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lungs. It can be life-threatening and requires urgent medical treatment.
The union’s concerns
On 20 October, the NFL Players Association, which represents NFL players, called for a full independent investigation into the medical care Hurts received.
The call came after the NFL defended the Eagles’ handling of his condition and decided against disciplining the team. The union said the league had previously told it that it did not plan to review Hurts’ care.
The union said: “Before conclusions are drawn about how this situation was handled, there must be a full investigation into what occurred.”
The response
The NFL’s chief medical officer, Dr Allen Sills, defended the Eagles’ medical staff at a news conference on 20 October. He said: “I don’t think you can take that outcome and say there was something flawed about the process.”
A day later, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league welcomed an investigation, describing it as “part of our processes”.
Recovery
Hurts is taking blood thinners to treat the clots and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the Philadelphia Eagles and his agent.
He will miss the rest of the 2026 season and cannot take part in contact activities, including football, while undergoing treatment. The team said he could resume contact training once he is off the medication and expects him to suffer no long-term effects.
Hurts will remain involved with the team and continue conditioning as he recovers.
