Good evening!

I hope you all had a fantastic pair of long weekends. The newsletter will be back to regular scheduling now!

In case you missed it, Germany held its annual national championship for β€˜fingerhakeln’ or finger wrestling, over the weekend. Here’s a photo to help you understand more about a sport I’d personally never heard of until today.

Stat of the day

The time it took Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa to run the London Marathon on Sunday (local time). Assefa set a new women-only marathon record, meaning she did not have the assistance of male pacers. In the men’s marathon, Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe won in 2:02:27.

Quote of the day

β€œThere’s been no policy change, but obviously the implementation of the policy is where the issue is and the bunker intervening. It’s meant for serious acts of foul play and I think that there have been instances where it hasn’t met that threshold.”
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo speaking to Mark Levy on radio station 2GB regarding the rise in rugby league players being sent off the field for high contact. 18 players were sin binned over the weekend with 15 of those players sent off for what the referee perceived as high contact. While acknowledging that there had been too much intervention, Abdo also pointed out that the number of high tackles recorded by the league up until round eight this year is 379, compared to 201 at the same time last year.

Random fact of the day

On this day in 1975 Italian motorsport driver Lella Lombardi became the first woman to record a point finish in Formula 1. The Spanish Grand Prix was stopped prematurely after 29 laps due to a deadly crash and points were awarded to the top six finishers. Lombardi claimed a half point for finishing sixth.Β Β

πŸ‰ Carlton has shrugged off its early season woes with an emphatic 94-76 victory against the favoured Geelong Cats. The Blues victory was thanks in part to three goals each from returning forward Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow. Carlton have now won three matches in a row after a slow start to the season saw the side lose its first four. Also on Sunday, the Gold Coast Suns beat the Sydney Swans 117-79 and the Hawks dominated the West Coast Eagles 124-74.

Nichols and Robinson complete Aussie double at Bells Beach Ripcurl Pro

Surfers Isabella Nichols and Jack Robinson completed an Aussie double victory at the iconic Bells Beach Ripcurl Pro on Sunday. It marks the second time in three years that the event has been dominated by Australians, after Ethan Ewing and Tyler Wright both won in 2023.

What happened

27-year-old Nichols beat Brazilian-American Luana Silva in the women’s final to claim the biggest win of her career so far. Her other victory on the Championship Tour (CT) came in 2022 at another Australian surf destination, Margaret River in Western Australia.

Shortly after Nichols claimed the women’s Bells title, fellow Australian Robinson outsurfed Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi in the men’s final at the iconic Victorian surf break. The win marked Robinson’s eighth World Surf League victory.

The men’s and women’s CTs now head to Queensland for the Gold Coast Pro in May.

What they said

Nichols said: "The process for this win has honestly been a 15-year process. I've been coming here since I was 15-years-old. All the trips down here, three times a year, to come down and work on my technique, and it's all paid off. To have a bell, honestly, this does not feel real. I'm speechless."

Robinson said: "Far out man, it's just a surreal feeling. It's been a special week, I've had my whole family here."

Liverpool celebrate after clinching a record-equalling 20th title in coach Arne Slot’s first season (Getty)

Liverpool crowned Premier League champions

Liverpool beat Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspurs 5-1 to become the champions of English football for a record-equalling 20th time. While the club still has four matches remaining in the English Premier League, the victory on Sunday afternoon (local time) at Anfield has given them an unassailable lead on the ladder ahead of second-placed Arsenal.

What happened

Needing only a draw to win the title, Liverpool’s home fixture against Tottenham had been anticipated as the day that the club’s seemingly inevitable 2025 title would receive final confirmation. That feeling was put on hold as Tottenham, who are 16th on the table, scored the opening goal courtesy of Dominic Solanke in the 12th minute.

After that, it was all Liverpool. The home side struck back through goals from Luis DΓaz, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo to head into the half time break with a 3-1 lead. Mohammad Salah’s 63rd minute goal to make it 4-1 was his 185th goal in the league and makes the Egyptian the top scoring foreign player in Premier League history. To add to Postecoglou and Tottenham’s woes, Liverpool’s fifth goal was an own goal off the boot of Destiny Ugodie.

What they said

Coach Arne Slot told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Looking back I have enjoyed the whole day. You could see looking in their eyes how much it meant to them. It was impossible to us to not get that point or win today. What else is there to say? It is unbelievable. From this moment now I am part of the history of this great football club."

Mo Salah told Sky Sports: "It is incredible to win this with our fans. This is 100 per cent better than last time, especially with the fans. We have a different group now so to show we can do it again is something special.”

Foord powers Arsenal to Champions League final

Elsewhere in English football, Matildas star Caitlin Foord starred for Arsenal in its 4-1 victory over French club Lyon to advance to the final of the Women’s Champions League. Foord helped Arsenal to a 4-0 lead in the 63rd minute with an opportunistic goal after Lyon’s Vanessa Gilles slipped with the ball at her feet. Arsenal, whose team also features Australians Kyra Cooney-Cross and Steph Catley, will play Barcelona in the final.
