Good evening!

German man Tom Kopke has gone back-to-back at the annual cheese rolling competition on Cooper’s Hill near Gloucester, England.

Meanwhile, England’s Ava Sender Logan won the women’s race.

In case you haven’t heard of the competition, contestants race (slash tumble) down an incredibly steep grassy hill in pursuit of a three kilogram wheel of cheese.

The winner gets to keep the cheese and lots of people end up with some sort of injury.

Racing or falling? It’s a combination. See cheese on right side of the image. (Getty)

The number of years since Australian tennis player Alexei Popyrin has won a French Open match. The 25-year-old 25th seed got off to a winning start last night, winning the first two sets against Yoshihito Nishioka before the unseeded Japanese player retired with an injured back. In the second round, Popyrin is set to face Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo.

Quote of the day

β€œThe Βfundamental problem is you cannot overtake here. The cars are so big now that you just don’t have a chance to get alongside. It’s circuit specific, we’ve known that, it’s been on the calendar for 72 years. Everything has to move with the times ultimately.”
Red Bull’s Formula One team principal, Christian Horner, speaking to the media following the Monaco GP on Sunday. Sunday’s race has been criticised as boring because of the lack of opportunity that the cars have to overtake on the narrow circuit. Horner suggested that the course be altered so that there is at least one spot where drivers could overtake.Β

Random fact of the day

In the 1930 football World Cup final between Argentina and Uruguay, a different ball was used for each half because the two teams could not agree on the same ball. In the first half, they played with the Argentinian-supplied ball, and Argentina led 2-1 at half-time. In the second half, they used the ball supplied by Uruguay, who came back and won the match 4-2.

Australians Ajla TomljanoviΔ‡ and Daria Kastakina are both through to the second round at the French Open. Tomljanovic beat fellow Australian Maya Joint in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) and goes into the next round as the underdog against fourth-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini. Meanwhile, 17th seed Kasatkina will play against France’s unseeded Leolia Jeanjean. Five more Australians (Chris O’Connell, Aleksandar Vukic, Jordan Thompson, Kimberly Birrell, and Daria Saville) lost their first-round matches overnight, leaving nine Aussies in contention.

The final day of surfing at the Margaret River Pro saw South Africa’s Jordy Smith and Hawai’i’s Gabriela Bryan claim victory in the men’s and women’s draws, respectively. For Smith, who outsurfed American Griffin Colapinto in the final, it is his second win this year after taking out the El Salvador Pro in April. Bryan beat American Caitlin Simmers in the final to win at Margaret River for the second straight year. Smith and Bryan both sit atop the World Surf League rankings.Β

πŸ€ In the NBA Playoffs, the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-126 in Game 4 of the series. The Thunder now hold a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series and are one win away from becoming Western Conference champions and securing their place in the NBA Finals. After two games in Minnesota, the two teams will return to Oklahoma City for Game 5. In the Eastern Conference finals series, the Indiana Pacers lead the New York Knicks 2-1, with Game 4 being played in Indianapolis tomorrow at 10:00am (AEST).Β

πŸ‰ Sydney Swans captain Callum Mills has been handed a one-match suspension for rough conduct in Sunday’s loss to the Melbourne Demons. Mills leapt into the air towards the ball and collected the Dees’ Charlie Spargo. The match was his first this season after a long injury absence. Tonight’s tribunal will also see the Fremantle Dockers challenge a three-match ban for captain Alex Pearce following a similar incident in the Dockers' victory over Port Adelaide on the weekend.Β

27 taken to hospital after car ploughs through Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade

At least 50 people have been injured after a car drove into crowds celebrating Liverpool FC's Premier League title victory. A 53-year-old British man has been arrested, and police said they are not treating the incident as terrorism. According to the North West Ambulance Service, two people are in a serious condition, including a child.

Context

Over the weekend, Liverpool FC won the English Premier League (EPL). A street parade was held in Liverpool’s city centre to celebrate the victory.Β

Here, the Liverpool team was taking part in a 16km open-top bus parade through the city. It’s believed hundreds of thousands of people were in attendance.

What happened

According to local police, a car drove into crowds attending the parade around 6pm Monday (local time). A β€œ53-year-old white British man” from the Liverpool area has been arrested.Β

At least 27 people have been hospitalised, including several children. Dozens of others were treated for minor injuries at the scene. No deaths have been reported. An ambulance spokesperson said two people, including one child, sustained serious injuries. A paramedic was also treated at the scene.

ResponseΒ

Merseyside Police have requested people not to β€œspeculate on the circumstances” surrounding the incident. They’ve also asked people β€œnot to share distressing content online.”

Both Liverpool FC and the Premier League have issued short statements, saying the organisations were working with local emergency services to deal with the incident. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the scenes in Liverpool β€œappalling”. β€œMy thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” he added.

State of Origin preview: Blues look to go back-to-back as Maroons seek redemption

State of Origin begins tomorrow night, with Game One set to kick off at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. The NSW Blues will be hoping to begin their campaign to go back-to-back with a win, while the Queensland Maroons will be looking to reassert themselves on the Origin stage.Β

Maroons

The Maroons begin this year’s series with a home ground advantage at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. In the opening match last year, the Maroons dominated the Blues 38-10 in Sydney. They then lost in the series decider in Brisbane.Β

This is the third year with former Qld and Storm fullback Billy Slater coaching the side.Β

On paper, the Maroons are lacking their usual star power, missing Ben Hunt, Reece Walsh, and Selwyn Cobbo due to injury.Β

As a result, Robert Toia, Beau Fermor, and Trent Loiero are set to make their debuts on the notoriously physical State of Origin stage.Β

With just 10 NRL matches to his name, Toia will become the least experienced starting player in Origin history.Β

The Maroons' greatest asset may beΒ  Daly Cherry-Evans and Cameron Munster. Cherry-Evans and Munster are the second most experienced Origin halves pairing of all time, after Queensland legends Darren Lockyer and Johnathon Thurston.Β

Blues

The Blues are looking to go back-to-back for the first time since 2019. The biggest change for the side compared with last year has been in coaching personnel, with Laurie Daley returning to the role in place of Michael Maguire, who left the job for a full-time role at the Brisbane Broncos.Β

Daley’s previous tenure was for five series between 2013 and 2017. During that time, the Blues only won one series (in 2014), but it was significant as it ended an eight-year period of Queensland dominance.Β

The biggest challenge for NSW this year is juggling the dual star power of halves Nathan Cleary and Mitch Moses. Both players have played instrumental roles in leading NSW to victory in previous years, but they have never taken to the field together.Β

The Blues may also be hampered by injury tomorrow night, with centre Stephen Crichton having to pass a fitness test on Wednesday morning to play.Β

The series

Game two is set to be played on neutral ground in Perth, and game three (which could be a series decider) is in Sydney.Β

How to watch

The game is set to kick off at 8:05pm tomorrow night (AEST). It will be broadcast on Channel 9.
